Poll

How did the UMAT 2013 go in general? (modesty aside)

Pretty good, I'm pleased with my performance
Alright I guess
Not really sure, could have gone either way
Not too well, not happy with how I went
To be frank, a complete disaster
I didn't sit the UMAT 2013 today but like to respond to polls anyway

That Section 2 curve looks terrible for 2013. A 50 in S2 used to be around 60th percentile...not < 20th percentile like this year. Seems like S3 got harder and S2 got easier, in terms of content.

Is Monash allowed to change their 50-50-50 rule especially for S2 seeing as S2 was easier this year? Do you think that they might make the cut off for S2 higher?  :-\

They "can", but I don't think they will just because it'll take a lot of admin work etc :P

I've realised something today, the UMAT is a combination of luck and skill, I know people including myself who went well in preparation and didn't do too well, I also know people that did do preparation and went really well, people that did little to no preparation and did well, and people that did almost nothing and went bad. Any indications on how hard the GAMSAT is, for someone that is willing to give it their all?  ;) I guess I have to tell myself I would've got lower without prep, but it feels like a massive waste of time now, hmmm.

GAMSAT tests logical reasoning, problem solving and written expression. It is much more reflective of the effort that you put in/the way you think. For comparison:
I did medentry, scored 68th%ile for the Umat back in 2010. I did the Gasmsat in 2012, without any commercial prep course (just the acer booklets) and scored 96th%ile. So dont be so disheartened, there is hope (and you get multiple attempts at the Gamsat)

Wow, well done! I found the UMAT so be so different on the day in terms of section 1, there was no logical inferences from passages, just strange GAT style (but harder!) problems, section 2 was always my best section and turned out to be my worst, but section 3 was about the same  :D So does the GAMSAT work on a similar percentile ranking to get interview offers?

They use the raw score out of 100 for rankings, but i just quoted percentiles so that theyre roughly conparable. Every university is different. To determine who gets interviews, some have an equal weighting of GPA/GAMSAT (like UoM), some have GPA cut offs and then GAsAT rankings (like Monash and Usyd, the GPA cut offs are usually really low, about 65%) and some have GPA cut offs, GAMSAT rankings, but no interview (UQ). Basically, if you want med, and you deserve it, you'll get it.

Not to be a wet blanket, but there are plenty of people who "deserve" a place (as measured by academic marks) that don't get a place at medical school. The post grad model does definitely address some of the weaknesses of the undergraduate intake model but I would disagree that it's perfectly meritorious for academic strengths.

Other way. If you get it, you deserve it. But there will be people who deserve it who don't get it imo.

It's hard to believe it, until you put in the hard yards and to get a poor final result.

I empathise with you Edward...I really did put in the hard yards and was getting low 90%ile in my Medentry prep, nek minnut didn't do well on the day and got JUST below the min for UA Dent requirements 83%ile :'(
it really does hurt a lot :'( it sucks how almost everything balances on ONE exam.
But hey, chin up! I am going try again to get a good atar for JCU/griffith. you may not feel like trying hard for fear of encountering that bitter taste of failure again...but as the cliche from batman goes -> Why do we fall Mr Wayne? So we can learn to get back up.
:) I hope that helps you and others out there who are in the same (crappy UMAT score) boat as me!

^ wow that must really suck  :(

Going into my spiritual mode: I think a lot of it depends on destiny. For those who weren't destined to enter medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy or pharmacy now, they were destined to enter it later; perhaps with greater maturity, understanding and rigour. Some of us were meant to push a little harder to achieve our goals. And who knows? Perhaps these people come out to be the ones leading the fuller lives?
