VTAC Preferences 2014 Discussion Thread

The system is going to open in a couple of days and I'm betting there will be a whole heap of discussion and questions regarding it all, so I just thought I'd put this out there.

Who's excited? I've already got a bit of an incomplete mental list of what I'd like to put down. How about you guys? :)

At the moment, I've only got six on my mind, but I'll make sure I find courses to fill up the other six slots.

I'll just throw into the discussion before it starts that you really do have until after ATARs come out to decide on what to do. If you're unsure of your preferences, just put something down in August (especially before September when timely round applications close off), and you can (with the exception of most of November, they close off change of preferences for a month or so around then).

There's the exception of some courses that might have an early cut-off date for when you can enter them into your preferences lists, so another reason why it's worth looking at courses and doing the initial application early. Usually it's the courses that have a range of criteria like folios, interviews, other tests and so on that might choose to do that.

You don't have to fill out all 12 preferences (IIRC you can get away with having 1 preference, but you'll get a message recommending that you should put in more preferences), but I'd say it's probably a good idea to have at least a few options in mind. Personally I filled up all slots on my VTAC and UAC applications just for the sake of completeness, but there's no compelling reason to go out of your way to pick 12 courses.

You can find out all the dates and stuff from the VTAC website, I won't give a direct link since it's worth the time reading through all the information on that website for yourself. If you're interested in interstate unis, then you can find the relevant authority for each state from here http://www.actac.edu.au/

Why fill it up? I didn't.

I did, but my last six were all ridiculous. I put Mining Engineering from Monash (despite being hopelessly at engineering, and not so keen on going into mines). Then the very last was Theology at ACU. Just for laughs.

Monash ended up giving me a scholarship for Mining Eng...oops.

I put in around 8-10 preferences I think, no harm in doing so really.

Whilst it is a bit tedious, it probably is worthwhile. Shenz0r's right, there's no harm...and to some extent it's probably good for you, because you've got to do the research properly, rather than just banging in what you think you want to do! :)

A mate only put B.Sci at UoM in his preferences (so just one preference). He got in by a few ATAR points so worked for him.

I only put like 3 preferences: Science and Commerce at unimelb and Engineering at monash. The way I see it, there's no point in filling in unecessary slots with courses that don't interest you.

Well I've made my list on Word ready to go for tomorrow. Also, I found a couple of great degrees to fill up my final spots in case things don't go to plan at the end of the year.

How is everyone travelling? :)
