Question about Apoptosis:
How would you guys explain it in terms of signal transduction?
Also, what are some extrinsic causes of apoptosis? (does extrinsic include mutations etc? or is that intrinsic)
Thanks.
It involves the receipt of a signal by the cell that needs to be apoptised, and the activation of several molecules (e.g. caspase enzymes) that finally leads to the response made by the cell to self-destruct.
That follows the signal transduction model:
Receipt of a signal --> several molecules activated --> Response made by the cell.
Extrinsic causes:
- Too many of that particular type of cell exist
- The cell is no longer required
- The cell has completed its cycle.
Intrinsic causes:
- DNA has been damaged (i.e. mutations, etc).
- A cell has been infected by a pathogen
