Physics for Biomed

Hi guys,

I was wondering if anybody who has done this subject in the past has any tips? Most of us are feeling quite lost in the subject as it goes through quite a lot of content in a short period of time. A lot of us are half learning it due to having to constantly move on. Any advice?

How many of the allocated problems in the book are you doing?

Personally, I'm doing all of them and still have no idea.

i struggle even to do the ones they suggest. They take a lot of time to do and you really have to understand the material first. I know a lot of people who are still on the problems from 3 weeks ago...

I assume that physics for biomed is much like fundamentals
Basically it's just a matter of keeping up to date with the textbook problems (and only the ones that don't look stupid like a lot of the conceptual questions stuff is pointless, if you can't seem to be getting them right than ask on yahoo answers or atar notes and someone should get back to you and if no one does than just look at the solution and work backwards). In addition to that keep up to date with tute problems and obviously past exams closer to the time.

That's basically it. And sometimes even the things that really seem stupid in the lecture notes can come up in the exam e.g. anatomy of the ear or things that have never been in past papers before.

Ok thanks for the tips. I think it is similar to fundamentals, basically its described as year 11 and 12 physics shoved into one semester so its really fast paced. We have done about 11 chapters of our textbook already, he almost "covers" a chapter every  lecture, but it is just really rushed.

If UoM Physics for Biomed is similar to Monash's Medical Biophysics, then I completely understand your situation :-\

I found it useful to make summary notes of all the theory from the lecture slides. It's tedious, but I found that it did reinforce the material that I *sort of* understood during the lectures (having had no previous experience with physics before uni).

Another thing to do - which Monash provided us with - is Pearson's online physics teaching system called MasteringPhysics or something along those lines. It gives practice questions with detailed video and animation tutorials, which I found helpful with some of the concepts that made no sense to me in lectures. Not sure if UoM can get you access to this, but try it if you can.

Also, if you can, try to get a hold of Monash's custom textbook that we used for Med Biophysics: "Physics for Biosciences". It's just a compilation of some textbook chapters from different texts, like Giancoli's Physics it also has some physiology stuff such as cardiovascular systems and cell ion gradients etc. really good resource to get.

Good luck guys, I know how difficult it can be first-hand, but I'm sure you're all up to the challenge :)

Oh I just remembered you can't use physics in a sentence without using "khan academy" in it too!
Great to help you brush up on the basics

NUMBER #1 THING YOU MUST DO:
Read Knight's 'College Physics: A Strategic Approach'. Has all the information. Read each word in every relavent chapter and do as many questions as you possibly can from the questions at the end of each chapter.  Got a H1 with that strategy (also placed less importance on lectures). If you need answers then just google the question, usually some has posted the worked answer.
