Probably been asked before in ITT but because we have so many regulars in the thread now and people change their minds: what courses are you guys looking at doing after VCE? If you're not going to uni, what will you be doing instead (e.g. deferring/gap year) or work straight away.

Probably been asked before in ITT but because we have so many regulars in the thread now and people change there minds: what courses are you guys looking at doing after VCE? If you're not going to uni, what will you be doing instead (e.g. deferring/gap year) or work straight away.

My plan is to travel around Australia with a few mates during the time we have off and a bit into the new year (going stealth camper and absolute bare minimal to save costs lol) , and then take a gap year and work as a painter with my mates dad for a year and maybe travel a bit more depending how much money I have. In the unlikely event that I get into med, I want to have some time to travel and relax before knuckling down for how ever many years (although it is possible to take time off). In the words of mahatma ghandi, "there is more to life than increasing its speed"

I was planning on doing Engineering, but after talking to some people in the industry they say it's not a good idea at the moment. Unless you do civil, you're pretty much boned for jobs in Melbourne.

Thinking of doing something in health sciences, but I don't think I'll get a high enough ATAR for it.

Hoping I can tutor whilst going to uni with my best mate, maybe even start our own tutoring company/organisation

Why are you looking at the job market now when you wont graduate with an engineering degree until 2019 or 2020(if your doing a double degree) and by then the job market may be very different. Even if you have trouble finding a engineering job then engineering is still a well regarded degree so you could still gain employment in other areas with it.BTW I'm planning on doing an engineering/science degree specialising in enviro eng.

Planning on doing the comm/eng at Monash (mAjoring in finance and civil respectively). So maybe I cold try for a job in the finance industry as an analyst or something, I heard they like engineering kiddies.

Although I'm only year 10, I've researched and talked about engineering with people in the industry for quite awhile - completing my work experience at an engineering firm right now as well.

I've found that it's true engineering is saturated currently, but most jobs are as well. I don't think there will be any significant differences to occur in the next 5 years regarding the availability of engineering jobs. Luckily, I'm interested in civil engineering!

It's a lot easier to switch from engineering to finance but not so much the other way around.

Also, take all my advice with a grain of salt since I'm only Year 10 so I might've taken things out of context. It's probably better to research this yourself.

I should really just focus on my last final years of high school instead of job prospects

Still deciding on what courses to choose from Biomedicine or Commerce at UoM or both as a double degree at Monash (Biomed/Law seems enticing too) or Bachelor of Science (Global Challenges)! Chances of interstate offers have pretty much been dashed for me so now I have to look around Melbourne LOL >.<

@IndefatigableLover: Bachelor of Biomedicine (or Science if that doesn't work out) majoring in Neuroscience at UoM, so definitely come and join me in that path if you keep it as one of your options! As I explained in another thread, I'd be interested in going to Monash, but I'll be commuting to get to Melbourne and I don't want to turn a 1.5hr trip into a 3 hour trip

If all else fails, Certificate II in Tupperware Containership at TAFE will be satisfactory.

Speaking of courses and stuff; when does VTAC open? I'm pretty sure it's in August sometime, right? And how long does it stay open for? How many preferences do you get in total? My school hasn't told us anything about it so far this year -_- Also are any of you guys planning on attending any open days for any Universities? At the moment I'm planning to go to the Melbourne and Monash ones.

Don't worry, my school hasn't told us anything about VTAC course preferences yet either. I'm sure they'll give us more info later, but around August sounds right. In terms of open days, I went to the UoM open day last year and I might go again this year (free stuff is always nice) but I'm not 100% sure on that.
