Hmm, I guess I can't really say for subjects other than maths/science, but I think in terms of the 'mental stimulation' that these subjects provide, it's adequate enough. Sure, sometimes the content can be dry and a little superficial, but for all intents and purposes, they do good enough of a job. And we have to remember that schools, and arguably VCAA, have to cater to the majority of students. The fact of the matter is that the majority of students don't complain about how unchallenging or shallow a subject is, but rather, how 'difficult' and 'confusing' it is. Perhaps this may stem from how disengaging VCE can be, but this probably has more to do with the delivery of the content as opposed to the content itself.

Besides, from what I've seen/read, many tertiary-level subjects do in fact have an emphasis on rote-learning (just have a read of the UoM General Chat); not only that, from what I've read, many uni subjects also adhere extensively to a study design (a unit guide perhaps) and rely heavily on reading off lecture slides to deliver their content (read: http://theconversation.com/why-universities-should-get-rid-of-powerpoint-and-why-they-wont-43323). In this sense, it's a problem not only restricted to the VCE.

As an aside, some people argue that because VCE is inherently unfair from the outset, this somehow justifies cheating in SACs and the like. Nothing more than a logical fallacy if you ask me.

i totally echo what you're saying, it's just sometimes when I'm in class, I don't know how to explain this - but I sort of wish for more. Like, answering the same types of questions over and over again, is just ugh. I know it's necessary and they need to cater for the majority of the state, or maybe it's just the way I'm being taught, but idk. I miss learning for myself a bit, and i just wish vce would encourage that a little bit more, y'know? having said that, it's not by any means a terrible education system; i am grateful for any opportunity to learn in an environment which rewards hard work. I feel as though if vce has any major issues it would rather be in the lack of equity and learning issues for those who are financially disadvantaged. there's always a chance for reform and flexibility of learning experience in the future i guess :)

Also yeah side note - that irony was kind of amusing!
Presumably I guess just for the purpose of feeding Mr Lu's hyperbole, sensationalist reading and all that. Pree much the same reason I keep following the thread haha; colourful language +condemnatory take downs...though it's winding down now in the last few pages :)

This is exactly how i feel. I only learn new content by myself, every class is revision.

Y'know, I figured that if I did the work in class time, I didn't have to do so much at other times.  Let's face it, you're forced to sit through class - why not work hard then, so you can laze round at home?  You can actually do a lot of your own work/self-learning during class time by ignoring the stuff the teacher's waffling on about (bring in a laptop and 'take notes' :P)  Why waste the opportunity?
VCE (2014): HHD, Bio, English, T&T, Methods

I totally agree but I work better at night and especially when I'm alone, it works for me

and there isn't much of a learning environment in 4 out of 5 of my classes tbh

I guess you have not witnessed a non-elite school, where even listening to the teachers will lower your IQ..

Can confirm, there are cases of teachers going to students to ask for help. Role reversal?!

Whilst this is good in theory, some of my best VCE memories were the banter and good times I had in class.

eg. using dilute HCl in pipettes and firing them like guns at each other to recreate real-life counter-strike, or burning coils of magnesium for fun, or turning the gas port into a flamethrower, or discussing with our methods teacher how to best destroy the music faculty, or racing to complete The Age sudoku, or playing actual counter-strike (version 1.6 for those keen) in English, playing table cricket, or just bagging each other for no particular reason, etc etc.

I can't do that stuff at home by myself with all my friends living in all corners of Melb^^. I can't remember doing much work in any of my VCE classes (exception of spesh, perhaps), and I can't remember others in my class getting much done either (and these are classes that had people getting elite ATARs), and I wouldn't have played my VCE in any other way in that respect.

Me and my best mate at school always do stuff like that in chem, I've burnt many gloves, squirted a lot of water at people, set fire to pacer lead, always a good laugh. Given that my school is quite lacking in assertive bodies of safety, my chemistry teacher just stands around and chucks a giggle while me and my mate do this stuff ahahahhaah  ;D

You should try putting a CD in a microwave, excellent lights show.

Disclaimer: the microwave will smell like shit and may or may not work after that
