Biomedicine --> Medicine
« on: January 17, 2014, 10:38:47 pm »
Hey I'm feeling really confused at the moment, basically I got to the interview for Monash MBBS and didn't make it in unfortunately  :(

I got an offer for Biomedicine at UoM. However, I've read about how for the 2017 Monash Biomedicine cohort, at least 50 places will be reserved for the highest ranking students to go onto graduate medicine without need of the GAMSAT. I also have been offered two scholarships at Monash but nothing at UoM, I'm really torn now! If I go to Melbourne do I just tough it out, hope for the best, prepare for the GAMSAT and hope for an interview at any of the 3 graduate med schools or should I go to Monash (it was 1 preference lower) and set my hopes on being in the top 50 for 2017 entry??

Does Melbourne have anything that can bypass the GAMSAT like Monash is suggesting, or is that only for the 99.90 scorers? There's just so many things going through my head at the moment and all I want to do is get into Medicine after being rejected from Monash MBBS  :-\ what are your thoughts on this?? Is the GAMSAT more pre-parable for than the UMAT?? I just feel so disappointed and lost at the moment after coming so close, I don't know what my best bet is at the moment. Any help would be appreciated. :)

Hey mate, sorry to hear that you didn't make it.

There are "guaranteed" entry schemes which can "bypass" the GAMSAT but you need a 99.00+ ATAR and 75% average across your degree. The real catch to this is that the MD place you get is not a CSP but instead a FFP (FULL FEE PLACE which means you pay around $62K each year for every year of MD you do ==> 250K ish by the end of your 4 year MD program).
Since you were offered the scholarships at Monash, and because of changes to the Monash MBBS program, I would be more inclined to go to Monash Biomed since those options are exclusive to their students not UoMs.

I haven't done the GAMSAT yet but from what I heard, it is more knowledge based than the UMAT.
If you choose the Monash pathway and do not get the "conditional" / "provisional" offer, you can always try out for Melbourne MD or other unis ;)

Hope this helps.

Unless you got to 99.90+ and do their Biomed degree, you need to sit gamsat for Melbourne. If i were you, I would pick Monash and do gamsat as well. If my biomed gpa is very good and GAMSAT is also excellent, I can choose between 3 med schools. If my GAMSAT is low and I am still in the top 50, Monash med is still my "backup" (not saying monash med is bad. This backup is actually very nice lol)

yup do that ^ that way even if you dont get into melbourne MD after biomed @ monash, youll still have the monash MD option

Hmmm true, more importantly! I've been offered Biomedicine @ UoM as a higher preference in my VTAC list over chancellor's program (or whatever it's called) at Monash that was a 99.05 clearly-in, so what do I do if I decide I'd rather go to Monash now?? Is it possible for me to do that highest stream of biomedicine at Monash or despite what I want am I stuck with Biomed at UoM for having it higher on my list in the first place :\

You could do a negotiated offer for the Biomedical Science (Scholar Program) at Monash if it was lower on your preference list. I'm not entirely sure how they work as I never went through the process but it seems to be relatively straightforward!

Thanks for your help, tomorrow I will talk it over with my family and give Monash a call on their helpline to discuss what happens from now. :)

Best of luck! Biomed at Monash has been great so far, so I'm sure you'd enjoy it :) Let me know if you have any specific questions about the course.

Thanks I'm really looking into it at the moment, I'm looking into the Chancellor's Biomed program at Monash, the clearly in is 99.05, you need min. 30 english, 40 chem, and 40 in spec/meth/physics, do you reckon that I could potentially slide considering I excelled in all the other criterion (about 13% got lower than 99.05 and got a 1st round offer) with SEAS across a few categories, like do some math/physics electives in the 1st year?? Otherwise there's the 95ish stream with the honours year, I know someone that did this but left after the end of the 3rd year as they got into MD at UoM, could I do the same?? I just don't really want to waste a good 99 ATAR on a 92 straight biomedicine course if you know what I mean  :-\

Sorry dude :( prerequisites are strict. The BBiomedSc Adv with Honours takes 4 years and for doing med, 4 years is unnecessary. I'd recommend taking straight BBiomedSc.

To be honest, there isn't any major difference between the BBiomedSc, the BBiomedSc Adv. (Hons) and the BBiomedSc (Scholars). You're all taking the same units and the only real difference is that with Advanced with Honours it's slightly easier to get into an honours year, and with Scholars you can apparently accelerate your degree (but I can't imagine why anyone would want to do this haha).

Ok let me write out my pref. list:

1) Monash MBBS CSP 2) Monash MBBS ERC 3) Monash MBBS Bonded 4) Melbourne Biomed (the 99.90 one I didn't get  :P) 5) Melbourne Biomed 6) Monash Biomed Scholar 7) Monash Biomed w/hons 8 ) Monash Biomed.

If I want to elect Monash for the reasons you're giving me in this thread and negotiate through VTAC, I'm going to elect the the Monash ones below the Melbourne Biomedicine offer that I got. Then would/could I get a 2nd round offer allocating me a spot there (I should accept the Melbourne offer shouldn't I???? I don't know I don't want to reject it, and be completely stuffed!!), what if [real hypothetical situation here] I get a 2nd round offer for Monash MBBS, I can only get one offer per round, IF I negotiate to be considered for the Monash courses (6-8) that wouldn't stop me from potentially getting a Monash Medicine offer if that were the case in the 2nd round offers right????

Edward -

About Monash offering 2nd round offers, I doubt that they offer Victorians any Round 2 offers. I am not 100% sure - ring up Monash Faculty.

If they don't offer Victorians Round 2 offers:

1 - Accept your Melb Biomed offer.
2 - Apply for a negotiated offer into Monash Biomed (you're not eligible for Scholars, and the Adv Hons program is a waste of a year if you just want to do med). If you get the negotiated offer, accept that offer and cancel your Melb Biomed offer.

If they offer Victorians Round 2 offers, then it's a gamble since Round 2 is the last round. Ring up VTAC and ask if negotiated offers can occur after Round 2.
