Chang Feng's thread

Hello,
After receiving my first outcome result for bio, my ranking is not where i would like it to be( maybe top 30% of cohort). I think one of my main downfalls is i tend to rush and not answering questions properly (maybe stress but not sure how to calm myself down). i think i'm about 10marks currently from top rank student. Can i still get a 50 in bio even if i don't get top rank, but do increasingly well on the final exams. Any tips on how i can improve, much appreciated.

Absolutely. And remember this is your first sac- you have many more to go and so you and definitely do much better next time and attain rank 1.
Good luck and don't lose hope!

I meant this Is the first outcome result (as in the combined 3 prac sacs). Thanks for the encouragement (cause teacher always says that highest sac mark will get highest exam mark in cohort, but then I keep on opposing her can't someone lower in ranking still get a higher study if their exam mark is better or not).. Does anyone have any tips in how to stress less, and how I Andre questions properly (exactly what it asking for)- I think this is my main drawback along with rushing due to stress

No offense but idk what your teacher's on about. You don't necessarily need to be ranked first in your cohort to get the highest exam mark- the ranking is just an indication of how you are expected to perform. So don't worry at all. I performed terribly in my first two sacs but whining wont help. Pick yourself up, work harder and you're guaranteed a great SS.

Awesome. Thanks for the encouragement. I definitely need something to motivate me (procrastinate to much).

We all do trust me. I'm extremely behind in all of my subjects.
But what you need to realise is that we're not the only people who face these rough tough times where we feel that none of our work is being paid off.

Remember, when you plant the seed, you don't see the flower immediately. It takes time. But underneath the soil, miracles are taking place.

Chang feng, you clearly are determined, it would be a shame to see a potential high achiever questioning their ability to do well.
I'm sure you will! Best of luck!

I found that the best way to reduce stress was to remind myself that my answer would be absolute rubbish if I were stressing. So, just take a breath before you answer a question. Read it twice prior to answering it. You want to make sure you understand any question before you start answering it. Then, formulate a response in your head, making any minor changes as necessary. Once you've concocted a succinct answer to the question which addresses all parts of the question, you than transfer it to paper. Initially this may seem to be a lengthy process. However, with more practice, it'll become instinctive and you'll be able to improve your marks by a lot.

Best of luck, and as much as I should take my own advice, don't stress :) best of luck, and I hope you score the 50 you aspire to achieve. Well done! :)

Thank you for the advice, I will certainly still aim for that 50. For the lymphatic system- could someone please explain its role and function (in relation to VCE)- all I understand is it contains b and T cells, macrophages to help with killing pathogen in the extra cellular fluid of the body.

Personally, the best thing I ever did with Biology was let go of deluding myself about scores and just enjoy the subject. That way, I ended up doing much better than I ever would have.

Hey,
I heard that everyone says A+ Bio notes are really good. Can anyone tell me what exactly is in it (are there summaries/ notes more than what textbook provide or is it just a summarised version of it), if i already wrote summary notes would it still be worth it. thanks.

Yes it's definitely worth it- it basically contains a summary of the important concepts in biology and has some great revision questions as well :)

So these summarise are purely condensed versions, in that it doesn't contain extra info ie i wouldn't find it nature of biology textbook. So A+ would still be useful to buy even now (one area of study has passed away) And one other thing, i know ATARNOTES book has been rated as being really good in terms of questions. But exactly how good are they in comparison to lets say NEAP QUESTION GUIDE FOR BIOLOGY, because it is quite costly at about $70. so good resources- not sure how much money should be used on it

I don't have A+ notes, but the Neap Bio book has mistakes in it. Some diagrams are drawn incorrectly, and sometimes none of the multiple choice options are correct, which gets quite frustrating when you're doing the practice exams under timed conditions... But that said, it does have few good (non-textbook style) questions.

Thank God I'm not the only one who noticed this. Some of the questions are also irrelevant and the wording is terrible.

Lymphatic system contains vessels and lymph nodes which returns fluid and protein to the blood. The fluid that Im referring to once enters the lymphatic system is called lymph ( which is basically water that contains white blood cell, especially lymphocytes and fatty acids from digestion). Along the lymph vessels are sections known as lymph nodes, which are filled with white blood cells. When we are infected with pathogen, the lymph nodes will swell up due to the rapid build up of white blood cell within to fight against and destroy the pathogen.
Hope this helps!
