Does anyone else get IMMENSE parental pressure for the HSC this year? Some of my friends are so relaxed and tell me that their parents dont really care much, yet others receive pressure but always do well. I feel like i'm stuck in a rut... my results are either declining or stagnant. Does anyone have any tips on dealing with stress and constant parental pressure?
My school did a program on stress and pressure. Apparently pressure and stress is not necessarily bad for you if you change your mindset about it. For example, we all remember getting stressed before an assignment and pulling all nighters to finish assignments, since we're so stressed. But, without that stress we might not have been motivated to do it. Basically the general idea is that if you think of stress positively and as a natural reaction from your body to prepare you for challenging events, then it will no longer be a bad thing that influences you negatively. My school did an experiment, which involved giving half of the students taking an exam a note talking about how stress is positive and how it helps you. The other half didn't get anything and apparently the students with the note scored higher than the students without it. So, basically if you change your mindset about stress, it may solve your problem and help you to be less negatively influenced by stress.

Well stress is also known to cause a variety or mental and physical illnesses, so I don't think it can be considered entirely positive. While a little stress is good for test performance and motivation to work, there are far better reasons to work hard for a test than fear of failure. I believe the best mindset is to be intrinsically motivated to work hard and achieve success.

There are better reasons to work hard, but I'm just saying that stress isn't that bad for you and can help to motivate you. Research shows that stress is only bad for you if you believe that it's bad for you. Here the link to the video which my school showed me. I think after watching it you'll get what I mean. https://www.ted.com/talks/kelly_mcgonigal_how_to_make_stress_your_friend

That video was way too 'stressful' (omg, pls laugh :( )
I actually agree with her to an extent. Most of the things we think about are pretty 'normal'. I mean, everyone goes through stressful times so if we take stress as a challenge to make ourselves better, we won't even be as stressed. I also agree with her point that being with people and helping others will make us more happy and therefore reduce our own worries. Thanks for the link, I really like the TED talk. :)

I feel as thought you need to get around the mindset that you are doing this for them, and start thinking more along the lines that you are doing this for yourself - for your future and what not. We often tend to over work ourselves when trying to please others, however, when we are only trying to please ourselves, we tend not to take things as seriously. Try to keep calm also and ensure that you are not overworking yourself.
Get it done now, and you'll have less to do later

Just a casual reminder about private Facebook chat groups etc- as they are external to AN, we cannot monitor them. Therefore, it is up to whoever is in the group to control it. :)

Hey Everyone!

Exams are right around the corner, as we have all realized! (hopefully)
For past students: when did you start revision for exams and how long did it take you?
For current year 12 students: have you started studying for exams yet? ans if so how much content have you covered yet?

Thanks Guys

I can't say I've started revising for the exams just yet. I've done two methods practice exams and a Unit 3 exam for chem but that's about it. Just finishing up Unit 3 coursework for all my subjects so that's the focus right now. Hopefully next terms I'll start doing more exams for spesh and methods.

i've done a bunch of practice questions from exams in various subjects (health is basically exploding with them) but not a full exam yet. and i suppose if doing language analysis (sidenote: what the heck is the plural of that? analysises? analysis'? analysi? lmao) and text response essays under strict time constraints count, then i'm 2/3rds of the way through an english practice exam haha. i feel like it's quite difficult to start them if you haven't finished the majority of both units, and most of my classes are still stuck in u3o3.

i honestly didn't think of them as right around the corner until the timetable came out. now we know exactly how long we have, it's a little more difficult to pretend study time is endless :(
