-asking for a curious friend-
if they do English and Lit and somehow don't pass English, does Lit become their main English or are they stuck?

(In other news- first midyear exam done!) :D

From my understanding, the English subject (either lit or English) that you do best in will be your compulsory/main English.

You'll be fine for the GAT. There's not a lot you can do to prepare for it.

For all you Year 12 students, please be aware that the GAT may have some significance, so don't discount it. If you happen to fall ill for one or more of your exams, they use the GAT score (with other factors) to decide the derived score. In addition, the GAT is used for some moderation purposes... lol that was nearly me, funny story

I was with my family in India for 6+ months in year 12 and I had to fly back on my own in the middle for a couple of weeks just to do the GAT hahahaha, VCAA wouldn't let me not

it's like

'why are you back here?'
'ummm... the GAT lol... only cost me a couple of grand to sit this dumb test'

And in the end, my English SS ended up 11 higher than my GAT writing score, and my Methods 9 lower than my GAT maths/science score...

You don't? Like Heidi, I do have a story to tell as well.

I had a pretty bad fever and had no voice falling exactly on GAT day of my Year 11 year (was doing a 3/4, so I was meant to take the GAT). I gave my school a medical certificate and got some stupid response on my results sheet at the end of the year ("did not take for unsatisfactory reasons" or something). Thankfully, I was okay for my actual exam, so I don't know what would have happened to my SS had I actually been sick a second time, but I'm led to believe there'd be some funky math going on in the background involving lots of different factors to get a derived score still.

This is very true. I had a classmate who fell into this category. Let's just say, it wasn't exactly the prettiest picture filled with rainbows and unicorns at the end of the year.

Does this apply to year 11s too?

I mean, I think I stuffed up my gat but would this affect my Atar or ss for the subjects I'm doing now?

If you sit your exams and don't do unusually poorly and don't need a reason for a derived score, the GAT is almost meaningless.

Worth noting this for those applying to Monash:

4.7.2   The following tests can be used as a supplementary measure of applicants' aptitude for the course, in conjunction with any other course admission requirements. (See also sections 6.1-6.2, for the use of these tests for alternative entrance.)

General Achievement Test (GAT)
Special Tertiary Admission Test (STAT)

It applies to anyone doing a Unit 3 or 4 subject :) Therefore it would.

It CAN have an effect on your score (and as a result, your ATAR). But since you're in Year 11, the score that you receive for the GAT will only be used for Unit 3/4 subjects you complete this year (you will have another chance to do the GAT next year as well).

Anything else, see pi's answer above.

I believe so, see the part of the rules I quoted. Luckily doesn't happen in USyd ;)
