Clearly in ATARs...

Hey guys, as ATAR release approaches, I have had my confidence slumped because playing around with ATAR calc, I have seen that my ATAR is pretty much contingent on my English score - and that also determines whether I get into my course.

The course I want to get into is Arts/Law @ Monash which has a 2014 clearly-in of 98.00.

I didn't apply for SEAS or any disadvantaged schemes so I am wondering:

If I happen to not get a 98.00 or the clearly-in score, what are the chances of still getting into Arts/Law? Ie. how flexible is the clearly-in? Does the range drop (people reject offers etc) during second round? What prospects of getting into a 98.00 course do I have if I were to get say a 96 or 97? Also, stupid question (potentially) does clearly-in mean guaranteed spot? Ie. If I get a 98.00 there is no way I will be rejected, right?

Also, if I were to not get in - are there another rounds of offers post-second round offers? So basically what I am asking is: is it over if I don't get the clearly-in ATAR for my course?

Any anecdote of anyone specifically getting into Law below the clearly-in ATAR would be nice, and would settle me down for the moment, I guess.

Cheers!

Can't help with any Law specifics (I'm at Melbourne anyway) but the clearly in should give you a guarentee - that is, the 2015 clearly in, not the one from this year (ie. the one for the class or '13.) I'm not sure if Monash's required scores are more stable than others, but generally the clearly in will fluctuate quite a bit.

Anecdote: had a friend who wanted to get into Melbourne Arts, her ATAR was 91.8 and the clearly in for the previous year was 91.4. We were celebrating, until they released the actual clearly in's for our year (shortly after results... I can't remember exactly) and it had been raised to 92.35. She had a couple of SEAS categories, but nothing substantial, and she didn't get in.
(Story has a happy ending though, she's going to ANU to do an even better course :) )

Don't be too disheartened though: every  year there is a pretty large percentage of people admitted below the clearly-in.
You can find exact numbers here.
I believe this is for Monash Arts/Law:
Round   Clearly-in ATAR   % Offers Below Clearly-in
First           98.00                   26.98

So close to 30% of people in first year at the moment had ATARs below 98.

Hopefully someone else can give more specifics as to whether those numbers are likely to change drastically.

Fingers crossed it all goes well for you - transferring after a semester/year is always an option too :)

Hello all,

just seeking people's opinion on whether it is likely i'll get into my preferred course, Law/IR at Deakin, in my ATAR as 0.95 off the clearly in for 2014 and they accepted 25% of students below that clearly in, but do not have any SEAS consideration?
Cheers

It's pretty hard to tell, it's certainly a possibility, but regardless, it should be your 1st preference. (You shouldn't order your preferences from highest to lowest ATAR  - order it by preference and you can't go wrong).
