Hii~ I'm in Yr 11 doing Yr 12 Chinese SL this year and I'm actually panicking. I can speak it semi-fluently and have no problem hearing. My biggest problem is writing! There's so many words that I just can't remember how to write, I know how it looks like, but i just can't seem to memorize it when writing essays. Is there a way to improve myself by the time we have the written exam?

I used to have this problem as well. The way to rectify it is: don't stress. It's only the beginning of the year, so it may take a few more weeks for your mind to be fully accustomed to VCE Chinese. Panicking fills your mind with doubt, leaving no energy to remember words. Practicing your oral and writing skills by speaking and writing essays in Chinese will definitely help. Only when you feel confident with Chinese words will you remember them, and practicing makes you feel confident :)
It may seem scary since it's your very first year of doing unit 3 and 4 subjects, but I assure you, panic is the bane of all students.

Good luck this year!

Did anyone take a peak at the 2014 exam? I found it more challenging than the 2013 exam.

The general consensus was that 2014 was easier.

Yep Imo the 2014 exam was much much easier than the 2013 one, although all that really meant was you needed a higher exam mark for a certain, and that every mark lost would punish you. On anothernote- what are you aiming for? It's pretty impressive you're already trying exams in feb!:)

Hah nah, I'm only doing 1/2 right now. I'm just hijacking their friend since it seems like no one on AN is doing 1/2  :P

Anyway, I remember you saying your Chinese school didn't speak Chinese in class but you still managed to pull off a pretty good score. How did you do it?

I didn't actually go to a "Chinese school" I just did Chinese at my day school- where we didn't speak chinese in class because no one would be able to understand what the teacher said if they did haha! I've always liked Chinese as a subject, and thus I put in a lot of effort- iirc I did my general conversation draft in the summer holidays, and memorised my one minute report (basically thanks to Drake for inspiration and proving you don't need to be a chinese background speaker whose talked chinese since they were 2 and go to 新金山 to get 40+). Our school basically focused on the oral all the way until the actual oral exam in October, so that's what I did too, meaning I didn't do any practice essays except for for SACS (so about 4 essays give or take lol). I also watched (or tried to watch) chinese television shows- if you look hard enough on youtube you'll find some, one I liked was 爸爸我们去哪?In hindsight, I would really, really recommend doing consistent preparation for the written as well though (for comparison I lost 30 marks in my written exam), at least try a practice essay every now and then instead of SWOTVACing it after your oral finished.

Honestly if you're this motivated and only doing 1/2 I'm sure you'll be fine! All you need is hard work and practice, which you'll have plenty of time for if you do 3/4 in year 11!

My best advice is to treat 1/2 as if it were 3/4. The biggest mistake I made was bludging 1/2 (skipping class, never did homework etc) and thus having to learn EVERYTHING in 3/4. Take advantage of the extra year you have and aim to be rank one from the outset next year.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'm also doing physics 1/2 alongside CSL.

Is it worth doing any additional Chinese work along with my XJS homework?
