But say one person has 100%, and the next person has the very next highest mark (since exam scores must be discrete). How could that next person possibly get anything lower than the next highest study score?
i.e. Let's say the total score for all GAs is out of 100. Each score must be a discrete value.
Person A gets 100/100
Person B gets 99/100 (next best score)
Now if Person A gets SS 50 and Person B gets SS 48, then what do you have to do to get an SS of 49?
So by contradiction, Person B must get 49.

You can extend this to any study score...
If Person B gets 49 then Person C, who scored 98/100, must get 48 and so on...

Say there was 20 spots for a SS of 50, and 25 spots (because it's a normal distribution) for a SS of 49. If 45 people got 100/100, then the people who got 99/100 would get 48. Of course it's all theoretical here and the numbers are obviously made up, but it's just for examples sake.

But how would you separate the 45 people who got 100/100? That's unethical!

@ shinny I don't think it would be possible. People can purchase their statement of marks and prove they owned up everything. They can even inspect their exam paper to prove they got full marks on everything.

haha

VCAA is gonna die

They'd just all get 50 I assume. It's just that this doesn't happen I think (well, shouldn't unless VCAA are idiots with their exams). A more realistic example might be 35 people getting 100/100, and then the next best 10 marks getting a 49 SS.

The tragic story of my life. I couldn't have prepared harder for Maths Methods :P

Aimed for a 50 throughout year 11 and I lost 2.5 marks on exam 2, with 100% on exam 1. Got a 49. So no, you cannot lose up to 4 marks because I was ranked about 2nd in a very big cohort (of about 200). I know people who have lost more than 3 marks to obtain a 47 and 46 etc. I know for certain that you can lose one mark on exam 2 to get a 50 as it happened to one of my friends.

Hope that helps.

Yeh I just realised that what I've said in the examples hasn't really proved all that much. However, I'm still pretty certain that what you said is incorrect as I've definitely heard of people losing more SS points than marks. I'm just not too sure of the mechanisms behind it...perhaps SAC marks go into the decimals after moderation? I'm not too certain.
