Biomedical Science/Commerce Double degree at Monash

Hi,
I'm deciding whether to do a biomed/commerce double degree at Monash.
I was wondering if anyone who does this double degree feels like it's a lot of work, and roughly how many contact hours there are per week?
Also, what sort of careers could come out of doing this double degree?
Thanks in advance:)

I do this degree :) The commerce side balances out the workload so its not as heavy as a straight biomed degree

Awesome:)  how many contact hours do you have per week? Do you recommend doing this double degree over doing commerce at UoM?

usually for commerce you have one 1hr lecture and 1 1.5 hour tute. For biomed you usually have 2 or 3 1hr lectures followed by a 3hr lab and maybe even a tute. This is per subject. If you are considering commerce at melbourne, how much do you want to do biomed? Id go monash because 2 degrees is greater than 1 haha but it depends how much you want biomed

Oh I see
I want to do both equally as much but I'm just afraid that doing a double degree may be too much of a workload.
But from what you said, it doesn't seem too bad!

the double has a smaller workload than the single in biomed - its just that the work is spread over an extra year. I would go with the double :)

Hi yazzman,

I'm also interested in this degree (can't decide between Commerce/Law now) but was wondering from the Commerce perspective, have any companies been deterred from you completing a Biomedical Science degree (if you've heard of anyone applying for placements that is) since I've heard a few things that it's looked less upon than say Engineering due to the flexibility that it offers...

hmm not that I've heard of. However, I'm guessing most people would apply for internships etc during the summer.. I'm only second year so i haven't really gotten to that stage yet haha

Is it true that anything more than 7 years of tertiary study are full fee places, and not CSP?

That law has since been repealed. It may have been a very old post.

It was true back in the day, when i first started uni or a bit earlier (2009-2011). The government would only pay for 7 year-equivalents of uni. Now it's essentially unlimited. There are still some restrictions but you're average 18 year old student won't need to worry about them and likely will never encounter them (it involves going back and forth between bachelors and postgrad, etc).

Quote
Student Learning Entitlement (SLE) was a government limit on the amount of Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) you can have. The limit was for 7 years of an Equivalent Full Time Student Load (EFTSL).

End of the Student Learning Entitlement (SLE) system
The SLE system has ended from 1 January 2012. Eligible students will no longer have a limit placed on how much study they can undertake in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP).

If you have used up your allocation of SLE, you will now be able to continue studying with Commonwealth Support.

If you have used up your SLE and paid for a fee-paying place and/or received a FEE-HELP loan, you are not able to receive a fee refund or reversal of your FEE-HELP loan.

Here is also an old AN post (by me apparently!) - No more 7 Year Cap on SLE's/CSP Places/HECs-Help (News article)

That can't be true. I know for a fact that Eng + Law is a little over 7 years, and it is CSP.

 I thought Eng/Law was 6 years long?
