Quickie:
If I'm talking about Elizabeth Barret Browning can I reference her sonnets in hindu arabic numbers instead of roman numerals?
ie sonnet 13 instead of sonnet XIII

Hi there,
You should definitely try to use the roman numerals in the exam since that is the name and number of the sonnet but I assume it is fine to put the sonnet in numbers and not roman numerals; I did it in my exams and I never got caught out for it in any of my internals/trials.

For related texts, check out this resource that Elyse made here. Has some great options that are worth taking a look at.
In terms of studying for discovery definitely KNOW YOUR RUBRIC this is definitely the starting point. Without it you won't be able to convey any of the buzz words and concepts that the markers want to see in your unseen answers, creative and essay. So definitely know the rubric!! Secondly prepare your material for your essay --> know your text and understand how it relates to the concept of discovery - if you have a prepared essay then its a matter of knowing your essay and practicing how to adapt it to different questions. If you dont have a prepared essay then definitely know themes/concepts and how they relate to discovery. Be familiar with a range of textual evidence and analysis that you can use in the exam depending on the question.
In general, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE the HSC is hard and it is a matter of practice that you can apply what you know and convey it in a manner that the marker understands your train of thought and argument.

Personally I used a book called The Messenger when I did the AOS Module Discovery. This book was enjoyable and easy to read, and reflects a deeper sense of self-actualisation and greater understanding of the surrounding world. The protagonist achieves this through overcoming daunting missions and personal psychological barriers. A great exemplar if you want to speak about the transformation within oneself.

My peers used another book called Heart of Darkness - relatively harder to read and understand, but demonstrates the conflicting human nature between the original goodness and the development of greed due to the surrounding environment. A very confronting novel, film versions are available online to improve your understanding. Definitely worth a read and a very good text indeed for discovery.

hey! so my prescribed text for module C, is "the art of travel" by Alain de Botton! anyway, every time i look at a question i feel as if i can only strongly answer that question with one section of the book. like for example "on anticipation." however... I'm scared i will get marked down if i don't base my essay on the whole book and just one section?  so is it okay if i write an essay on one section? thankyou!!!

Other sections of art of travel that work pretty well include on the exotic and on the sublime- these sections work alot better for the kinds of identity questions which come quite often so maybe prep for those too just in case

Adding on to this I find on the country and the city quite good cause it explores the restorative powers of nature and the effect of remebering natural landscapes in contrast to the detrimental city

My prescribed texts are poems, so would I argue intellectual AND emotional for poem 1 and poem 2, or intellectual for poem 1 and emotional for poem 2?

If you look at the Marker's comments from last year, they said both approaches are "equally valid". So, whatever feels more comfortable.

A spiritual discovery encompasses the metaphysical transformation of an individual; it can be as simple as rediscovering an individual's values and motives, such as love, dedication, and patience to as complex as the challenging of their faith. When we consider what spirituality actually epitomises, consider how the internal portrayal of character is changed throughout your story.
As Wikipedia defines "spirituality", we can begin to enhance how our values and ideas are changed, transformed, and evolve through external stimuli, embracing or completely rejecting our inner path to discovery and being able to define the essence of humanity.

In short: spiritual discoveries can just be the internal transformation of your character, exploring how external factors facilitate your character's ideas and values.

If the question in a HSC essay (Mod B) specifies one work out of a collection of works that you study as a set texts. Does that work have to then become the primary focus of the essay?
For example my set text includes 5 poems and say they specify one in the question. In a 4 body paragraph essay, would it be expected that it make up 2 of the paragraphs?

Just a question about the AOS creative on Monday. If they prompted you to write about how discoveries can be meaningful in ways that are emotional, intellectual, spiritual, creative and physical - could they ask you to write a story about only one aspect. creative or intellectual because my story has only really emotional and spiritual elements to it along with obvious physical discoveries
