Hello just wondering if anyone know the technique used ib " why it appears no other thing to me than a foul and pestilent congregstion of vapors " thanks

Hey! You could say it is olfactory imagery; is it actually referencing vapours? If not, then it is also a metaphor! ;D

Hey!

Hey there! So Module C is the Representation and Text Module. Here is the syllabus extract:

This module requires students to explore and analyse texts used in a specific situation. It assists students’ understanding of the ways that texts communicate information, ideas, bodies of knowledge, attitudes and belief systems in ways particular to specific areas of society.
Electives in this module are designed around a specific social context and the texts that are characteristic of and valued within it. Prescribed texts will be drawn from a variety of professional and social contexts. Students are also required to supplement this study with texts of their own choosing related to the module.
Students explore the role of textual features in the shaping of meaning in specific contexts. They develop the communication skills necessary for a wide variety of personal, social, historical, cultural and workplace contexts. Composition focuses on analysing and experimenting with textual forms characteristic of the specific contexts. These compositions may be realised in a variety of forms and media.

Context does play a reasonably large role in this Module; because ultimately, representations will have different effects in different contexts. Further, a representation is symbolic of the context of the composer, personal or otherwise. You are looking at how representations are indicative of context, and their effects IN other contexts.

It's not as much context as you have in Module A, but it is more than you'd have in Module B ;D

My question is about combining memorising with practice papers... For almost all my english sections I've prepared a generic essay (and I memorised them/similar essays for trials) and I plan on loosely memorising them to be adapted in the exam. Considering it takes me a while to memorise things and I've forgotten them since trials, when would be the best time to relearn them? Also how would you do a practice paper with your generic essay when you haven't memorised it yet? Cheers x

Hey! You might want to aim to have it memorised by like 10-14 days before, to give you the chance to get everything rehearsed properly under exam conditions? You can always attempt papers with your essay open in front of you as a starter, but this is nowhere near the same ;)

If you want to start Past Papers immediately, then you'll have to do it off the cuff! This probably something beneficial to you anyway, just in case your memorised essay doesn't suit the question at all, it's handy to have experience writing it from scratch under pressure!

Be sure to read this article on memorisation, it might help you out!! ;D

Hi,

My essay based upon the question: How do the authors Wilde & Stevenson explore the nature of moral corruption?

Hey Jake! I'm moving this essay to the Advanced Marking Board, check in there for your feedback over the next day or two! ;D

Haven't done this in a while, hope I still remember how to move stuff ;)

Edit: Woo go me ;)

yes, and you could say the imagery holds a negative connotation, which may reflect how the writer feels about these people. or types of people.  :)

Hi

I'll be honest I haven't seen this done before so I can't give a definite yes or no. To me, a rhetorical question seems to be more of a writing technique used in speeches and other text types. HSC English essays generally follow a pretty strict (and boring) formula: topic sentences, technique, analysis, explanation etc. so there's usually not much room for "out of the ordinary" ways of writing. In saying that though, I'm quite happy to be wrong here if someone has been told otherwise by teachers, markers etc.  :)

Hello :)
Not sure how to analyse this quote (my thesis references the reinvigorating and transformative nature of discovery)
‘Outside the shack…he walks slowly, allowing his eyes to adjust to the brightness, mind still inside’.
I want to talk about the last section, and was going to use spatial juxtaposition, but that didn't work because my next technique is juxtaposition (and the analysis there is mint so I don't want to change that). Any suggestions?

Yeah don't. I lost marks here for a pre-trial paper

It sounds far more like an Extension One or Extension Two essay to be using a rhetorical question. While I give you points for creativity, I'm not sure what an Advanced marker would think of it! You've got the consensus from us here that it's a no - but I can't tell you definitively, I just don't know for sure!

Is it useful to talk about the adverb, slowly? Is this about hesitation or resistance? Is the brightness metaphorical for anything in particular? Perhaps a new understanding that they are about to experience. I can't make a definitive comment on the "mind still inside" section of the sentence because I don't know for sure what it means based on the snippet in front of me. Is the mind metonymy?

I'll work out something :) Thanks very much

Do you get marked down on your "opinions" in module b or will you get good marks just as long as you answer the question?

Are paper 1 and paper 2 weighted equally?
