Hi there! This isn't a true statement that you heard. Classic texts are great to use because they have so many rich themes and textual details that you can use for your own essay. Not every teacher has studied To Kill a Mockingbird for example - although they may have read it leisurely. There is no higher standard expected here. And, when analysing a text, there's not necessarily a right answer. The way a marker interpreted a text may be different to the way you do, and you won't be penalised for that! It's just important that you back up everything you suggest with textual analysis, as you would for any text! I recommend classics because they have so many themes and ideas to work with, but you won't be penalised for using them and making a small mistake!

Thanks. I can finally choose a related text with ease for once

Hey  :) For Module B, I was wondering what on earth "textual integrity" means. I know in the syllabus it says something about its cohesiveness and how effectively it portrays whatever its meant to, but how does that slide into an essay??  ;D
Thanks  :) :)

Hey

Got to ask an AOS question. If you are currently studying a poem of some sort, then is it better to use another poem as a related text or can I do another text like a Play(drama/script)?

Thanks ;D

Hi I was wondering about the HSC/VCE notes that are available for purchase.
Would they be relevant/applicable to the WACE course?
I contacted ATAR Notes through telephone and he told me about the possibility of WACE notes in the future

I also wanted to add that in my report my teacher's comment was that I need to develop better writing skills but
how exactly can I do this?

Another question I wanted to ask was if I could have my attempt at text analysis looked at

Hey there!! Sections of the HSC Notes cover things like essay writing skills, more generic things that would definitely be applicable!! I am not sure about VCE Notes, but it could be the same, definitely worth a look ;D

Better writing skills is a very broad term, I'd be going to your teacher for some clarification there! Though any issues might definitely come out in that language analysis you attached, which I'll have a look at tomorrow for you! ;D and we can go from there! Practice definitely makes perfect ;D

I would really appreciate that XD
I also wanted to ask would the notes be applicable for methods, specialist and the other sciences?

Hey Brontem!! Okay, so this is something I struggled with heaps too, the definition you are talking about is:

The syllabus defines textual integrity as: The unity of a text; its coherent use of form and language to produce an integrated whole in terms of meaning and value.

The way I ended up interpreting this, basically, was how well the text achieves what the composer wants to achieve. It forms the backbone for a critical evaluation of the author's use of techniques, communication of main ideas, etc etc. A text has integrity if it is true to the desires of the composer. It sounds like you have this idea already., awesome ;D

In terms of slipping it into an essay, there is no need for you to specifically use the term if you don't want to. Just keep the idea in mind. If you did want to though, the term itself would perhaps be included in the Thesis, something like "The composer maintains textual integrity through careful consideration of contextual relevance," or similar, it isn't to you to make it fit your purpose!!

I hope this helps a little, definitely let me know I you want to run any ideas or questions past me ;D

Hey conic!! Completely your call, no one is better than the other, it's all about how well the texts themselves work with your poem! Though using something besides a poem might give you more techniques to discuss, which could be worth considering as a factor

Hm, possibly but definitely less so (or not at all), it might be worth cross referencing the WACE and HSC syllabi to see where the overlap lies!

So I guess another text is better?

Hi there! Basically I'm rewording what Jamon said, but only because I view textual integrity slightly differently. For me it is about the integration of textual manipulation (techniques of style or language), themes, content, and how they achieve the purpose. So basically, how all of those elements come together. For example, if you wrote a creative writing piece set in an era, say, the 1950s of America, and you mentioned Donald Trump and Doughnut Time (sorry, I have a donut next to me) then your story wouldn't have high textual integrity because the content of your story isn't consistent. So it is about everything working together to create a whole. :)

Well no, as I said it totally depends on the choices you want to make. Advantage of a poem is that it is easy to link, ideas will often be quite similar in how they are explored which makes the conceptual side easier. However, your techniques might be more repetitive. Really, the type of text is much less important than the text itself, and that it contains useful ideas to extrapolate upon  ;D
