What technique is " the dark man seemed to draw such energy from it " ?

Hey! I'd assume "dark man" is figurative language in this case, with dark not being a physical description but instead referring to the sinister motives of the individual. You could also say it is slightly alliterative :)

Hi!
I've got a question regarding memorizing. What is everyone's advice on memorising an introductory paragraph. As in writing a general introduction paragraph that can be molded depending on the question. I usually memorise my essays and usually just wing the introduction by directly answering the question. But for my upcoming english exam (this monday) I haven't memorised an introduction yet and I'm not sure if I should

Any advice would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks!

also just another question  ;D
If i was to memorise a very broad introduction, do you think it is a good idea to structure it based off the description and guide provided in the syllabus?

Hey there!
I used to memorise how I would introduce my texts, and I had a general idea of what my thesis had to look like. For example, I knew for Mod B it has to centred around textual integrity. Doing this gave me the feeling of security common to memorising a thesis, but also allowed me to adapt to the question appropriately

Could you please give me some advice in regards to my position statement and topic sentences answering the question??
The question is: "Discoveries can be intensely meaningful in ways that may be emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual.
How accurately does this statement reflect the experiences of individuals in your prescribed text and ONE other related text of your own choosing?"
Position Statement:
Discoveries that are stimulated by the reassessment of oneself, where perspectives are questioned or challenged due to the changing circumstances experienced by an individual, can be the most meaningful. As this process of rediscovery is self-governed, the potential for an emotional, intellectual, spiritual or physical transformation is significant.

Topic Sentences:
1. Memory is a dynamic process of rediscovery, where it can catalyse a deeper understanding of ourselves as previous actions are re-evaluated through a new perspective. This transformation can result in a rejection or acceptance of our past selves as these beliefs are challenged.
2. This process of rediscovery can facilitate confronting and provocative self-discoveries of the consequences of one’s actions in determining one’s dire circumstances.
3. Challenges can catalyse deeper understandings of one’s relationships, where the process of rediscovery can lead to new worlds, ideas and future possibilities

Thank you!!

HI!
Quick question about essay length...
I know my teachers tend to say put 5-6 quotes in each paragraph, but the word count ends up being ~1.4k which is impossible to write in 40 minutes.  I can probably write 1.1k within the time range, with around 4 quotes per paragraph.
I'm worried that this will not show the markers a holistic understanding of the texts.

Any advice would be appreciated :)

Hey guys,

So our english teachers decided to make us write on our core text and TWO related texts! So I have decided to probably pick the film Interstellar since its sci-fi context can relate to my core and was just wondering if you guys have any ideas that I can get started with relating to the process and repercussion of discovery seen in the film.

Thanks!!

Well to me that sounds excessive, your teachers expect you guys to write alot  ;D
At my school my teacher's expect around 3-4 quotes per paragraph, however they require an in-depth analysis of each quote. Personally I believe more is less when it comes to english. With more quotes there is less analysis and with less analysis there is not as much room to show the marker your understanding. Personally I would prefer 3-4 quotes with a sound analysis.

Also, for internal exams you need to listen to your teachers and do what your school excepts. So in your case stick to whatever your teacher's encourage but just make sure your analysis isn't damaged by including too many quotes.  ;)

does anyone know what the technique is called when the author repeats the word "and" between words in order to list them? (i.e. "I think it's healthy and beautiful and contagious and necessary")

I did mine in that structure and it was totally fine! :) As long as your arguments flow, of course.

Hey Sophie! Definitely can!

So having a read, I really like your position statement/Thesis, particularly the way it blends in the idea of questioning/challenging perspectives. That makes it your own and that is excellent, you are saying they are intensely meaningful BECAUSE they challenge perspectives.

I think your topic sentences though, could be straying from the question a bit, because they are relating to the challenging of perspectives rather than the meaning of emotional, intellectual (etc) transformations. This leaves that part of the question by the wayside a bit. Of course it depends on exactly what you do, but the topic sentences suggest that you've strayed a bit. Be sure that the ideas of the question continue to appear in some form in your paragraph topic sentences! Alternatively, they could appear in your amplification sentence as additional details - As long as they are there ;D

Welcome to the forums Julies!

So I think you've been given great advice above - 1400 words is way too much, and 1100 words is intense too. Most of my essays for the Advanced Modules were sitting just below the 1000 word mark - Module A probably got to 1100 because it was my best module ;D

That said, depending on the way you approach your analysis, 6 quotes isn't so far fetched per paragraph within that length. To get 6 quotes into shorter paragraphs, your analysis needs to be like a machine gun.

The use of TECHNIQUE in QUOTE shows the audience _____________.

^ Sentences like that - Absolutely no unnecessary detail. It is tough, but it can be done ;D you should do what feels right for you, 4 quotes is absolutely enough if you do the right things with them!! :)

Hey,

Sorry again for the many questions, I was just wondering, my Module A (Pride and Prejudice + Letters To Alice) assessment text type is a 'speech' and I was hoping that you might have some advice about how to render all my points and arguments correctly within a 'speech' text type?

Thank you so much,

Mary
Hey!
I did the HSC last year (2017) and my 10 units were English Advanced, English Extension 1, English Extension 2, Legal Studies, Maths and Studies of Religion 2. I achieved my ATAR aim of over 90!

I loved tutoring and running essay writing workshops (privately and at InFlow Education) so much that I decided to study a Bachelor of Secondary Education, majoring in English and minoring in Maths!

If you're thinking about tutoring, let me know x
