Heya!
I need some help with identifying techniques for this quote please:
"This country needs more than a building right now. It needs hope."
I've identified how there's repetition of 'needs' and since there's present tense it indicates a sense of urgency - but I feel as if there's another technique that could also be used to describe this better!

Hey,

Sorry again for the many questions, I was just wondering, my Module A (Pride and Prejudice + Letters To Alice) assessment text type is a 'speech' and I was hoping that you might have some advice about how to render all my points and arguments correctly within a 'speech' text type?

Thank you so much,

Mary

Hey Mary! So you'd analyse the text in the same way that you would if the assessment was written. The difference is how you present it. If you're allowed powerpoint prompts you'd present differently to if you present purely orally. On both accounts, you need to make sure the way you are expressing yourself is connecting to the audience - be responsive to the best way to orally communicate. It might mean you need to lower the formality from an essay in order to connect! The structure of your speech can be similar to an essay in lots of ways - with a thesis statement and then branching statements coming from that.
Have you been given the criteria for the assessment yet?

Hey! I think that "country" here is metonymy - we aren't literally talking about the country as in the sovereign state, but the country as an embodiment of civilisation, people, community, nationalism...etc. So "country" is metonymy. Then you tie that in with the repetition of need, and you've got yourself a great little pocket of analysis!

Hi Elyse,
The criteria should be on its way! Although we have been given the question, which is: How does the study of Letters to Alice on First Reading Jane Austen enrich your understanding of the complexity of social expectations in Pride and Prejudice?  In your response make detailed reference to your prescribed texts.

I'm hoping to formulate my thesis around:
Letters To Alice elicits greater empathy for women in the Regency Period, enriching the understanding of complex social expectations of marriage as imperative for Regency women, compliance to social hierarchy as necessary for belonging and the feminine ideal as providing social value and agency for women. (My own words).

Do you think that this would be good enough in answering the question? If not, do you think perhaps there is a better way to address it?

Thank you so much for all that you do on here!

Hey!
I did the HSC last year (2017) and my 10 units were English Advanced, English Extension 1, English Extension 2, Legal Studies, Maths and Studies of Religion 2. I achieved my ATAR aim of over 90!

I loved tutoring and running essay writing workshops (privately and at InFlow Education) so much that I decided to study a Bachelor of Secondary Education, majoring in English and minoring in Maths!

If you're thinking about tutoring, let me know x

I think it's perfect! You've covered a lot in there, although it is quite a long sentence. Your criteria will give you more direction about the tone and formality of your work. I find that speeches are most effective when written with the audience at the forefront of the writing process. Are you a comfortable speaker?

Hi Elyse,

Thank you for that feedback! And yes, it is a ridiculously long sentence! I am a comfortable speaker, having participated in many debating and public speaking competitions, hopefully I can incorporate my experience into the speech.

Hey Mary!
In terms of content, what you've written seems spot on! However I agree with Elyse in that the sentence is quite long, which I think (from personal experience as a notorious mega-sentence writer) may be difficult to get out effectively within a speech. I think you should probably break it apart a bit, or at least take a few (dramatic  ;)) pauses. Make sure you really practice delivering your speech as well given how extensive your vocabulary is. That may seem like obvious advice, but I got stung in this assessment task cos I kept stumbling over the word "seditiousness", to the extent whereby one of the teachers had to ask what the word meant at the end! Very embarrassing hahaha.

Hey Susie!

Thank you so much for that! Will definitely ensure I know how to pronounce my words :)  The sentence is mega-long, I am notorious for overwriting everything! I will definitely work on this, thank you for your advice!

Thanks again,

Hey there! My English Half Yearly's are almost upon me and I'm having trouble writing essays (big surprise there - it's not like the majority of us struggles with essay writing...nooooo.... sarcasm intended). So I guess that my 2 main questions are:
- How to develop your thesis for Module C essays? Does context have to be incorporated along with your texts in the opening sentence? I'm doing 'The Hours' and "Mrs Dalloway' by the way.
- What is the structure of a body paragraph? Is it the topic sentence followed by elaboration of how context influences social paradigms etc. What makes up an analysis? Do techniques HAVE to be utilised? This is also in relation to Module C. Pls help! For the sake of my sanity!  :-[ Thanks!!

Hello!!
I am having a little bit of trouble understanding module A. :'(
We are doing the same texts as you - Looking for Richard and Kind Richard III
We have an essay due very shortly ::) :( with the statement being:
"All texts have a use by date"
i am endeavoring to say that they don't, but may require amendments to penetrate the interest of the audience of a different context. :-\
Am i on the right track.... and can you please help with some textual evidence to prove so??
Cheers

Hi,

My half yearly is in two days, and I have two essays due - one for Mod A and one for Mod B. I was sick and have missed so much school and have been unable to do school work. How would you suggest for me to memorise my essays? I've written them and got my teacher's approval but I can't memorise the entire thing !! HELP !!

OMG. YOU DID RICHARD. THIS IS MAGICAL!! <3

Ok so here are my concerns for MOD A
1) How do I adapt+answer to the question?

2) I've written my essay but I don't think its generic.. I was initially planning to do 3 pairs of paragraphs comparing 3 themes. Now I don't think I have time to go back and create that but if I did, what themes would you suggest to do? Keep in mind adaptability as a defining factor. Theres SO many! E.g consumerism, free will VS determination, etcccc
And I don't think my essay is generic which is really worrying, should I send it to you/ post on that essay marking page and also ask for potential thesis' if I had to adapt? So the weekend before the exam, they'll give us 3 questions and one of them will be in the test for sure. How should I prepare then? I'll create three different thesis' + analysis' and memorise that but I'd also have to know if my thesis/analysis is good.

Adding a little technique like that, so you can use more than one technique, is almost never a bad thing ;D obviously don't go nuts, but two or three techniques in one bit of analysis is a great thing :)
