hey guys! I'm sitting the entrance test this year for year 9< 10 and I was wondering what sort of tips you could hand me? I'm super passionate about science and maths however I'm nervous that the scientific writing will be on a topic a know little to nothing about. I have a tutor in which we are currently studying physics (waves, electrical circuits, optics, energy) and in maths we are studying linear graphs, quadratics, simultaneous equations and points of intersection between a line and a parabola. I was wondering how much of the test revolves around these topics. Your tips are much appreciated!! :)

hey guys, so ive been going to james an for prep courses for jmss entry exames and ive been doing alright. I get superior in my maths or sometimes above average but for science im barely getting average. Is that a concern as i have heard that the real test is much easier than these preperation ones. IF you could give me any advice, it will be much appriciated.
thanks

Just a tip, if it hasn't been covered in school and isn't in your textbooks, they wont test on it. I bolded some maths stuff that you should know, but thats just my suggestion. For science a general idea of all those topics is a good idea. Most of the science was just general knowledge and interpreting data, and while you had to know some maths it wasn't anything super complex or that you wouldn't have a basic idea about.

The essays (for me at least, I had to test early so I got different topics but whatever) were fairly broad, and if you weren't certain on one area you weren't totally dragged down. I would suggest choosing the topic you are more confident about rather than the topic you think most people won't choose. If you aren't confident they will be able to tell and it wont come across as good as it could be.

The test is a while away (I think?) though so um I would suggest reading through your textbooks, doing some basic revision and if you can do some edutest tests (they'll help you with the type of questions found in the test)
hey, actually i wanted to ask if the essays are just like the normal structure (intro, body paragraphs and conclusion) and if you have to discuss or debate the topic in the essay's

I know the exam is coming close and I think I saw and essay question saying to 'describe an experiment', sorry it was something about crystals and I really need to understand how to interpret this. I'm confident in MCQ but not in essay topics, especially science. Anyone help?

Hello everyone,

You may want to take a look at the following resources and tips contributed by pi which from my perspective are very helpful to prepare you for JMSS entry test.

Another great resource could be http://www.aameperth.com.au/selective-school-test where you can go for a free diagnosis assessment as well as plenty of practice questions in all areas to get you better prepared for any selective entry high school examination including the one for JMSS.

Best Luck!

For MHS/Mac.Rob/etc.:

For JMSS:

You should definitely practise writing discussion style essays and responses. You shouldn't stress too much because they give you a whole bunch of information about the topic so that even if you don't have prior knowledge about the topic, you're still able to do well. Remember, the tests are designed to test your thinking. And also, you should ask questions on the other forum (this was last years forum): https://atarnotes.com/forum/index.php?topic=170882.0

Hi guys,
I will be writing my jmss entry test this year and i need your help. I would love to get some opinions and help from past students or anyone who has experienced the selectiive entry process. Please help me with the following.... A list of Interview questions and what we need to bring to the interview will be very helpful. For the interview do we have to bring our reports? if so which ones (last year or 1st sem reports?) do they keep them or just check them? will they judge me on previous test scores? Please help me out here!!! I havent been getting the best marks at school so i really dont want to show them my reports because im willing to work hard at John monash  :(

Hey nice to meet you,
Since your trying out this year there is a jmss 2019 thread, so anything you need help with or any questions you have should be posted on there. For the semester reports you will need to bring the semester 2 report for year 8 and semester 1 for year 9. Jmss doesn't put much emphasis on the reports so as long as you do well in the exam and interview you should be fine.
