Nothing wrong with using past trial papers, but by now you really should just be gunning out the HSC ones as they will best reflect what you encounter on the day

I thought past trials were useful for your HSC trials wheras the past HSC papers are for the HSC

What papers did you do before trials?

What about assessments with only 1-2 topics assessed?

Yeah... that doesn't necessarily contradict what I said.

Trial papers of course

Assessments? I didn't care for the most part - I just did whatever the school gave me.

I'm just curious to know but what jobs are currently in demand at the moment?

According to this skills shortages document, some of those currently experiencing shortages are architects, optometrists, nurses, IT security specialists, audiologist, vets, and several trades ;D

Ok

Has anyone here ever had to do peer marking for others? People say it's irritating and boring but I wonder how english teachers cope in doing so

Whenever I peer mark essays here, I find it quite boring and irritating but I feel the need to help others out and I feel that by marking others' works, I will benefit myself

What are your thoughts Elyse and Jamon, you two have been marking for a while already?

My approach:

- HSC Papers (there are over 25 of them for some subjects now, that is heaps)
- Trial Papers when they run out. They are still good indicators!!
- Assessments for if you notice a particular topic that you are struggling with ;D

Unless you notice an area(s) of weakness, assessments are probably best left to the wayside closer to the exams, better to tackle everything together :)

Marking becomes monotonous when you have identified all of the problems in the first two paragraphs, and the issues persist in the following paragraphs, but perhaps in slightly different ways, so you still need to give feedback on them. I love marking creatives the most, just because I love creative writing. Overall, marking isn't too bad! It just can be time consuming when you realise it is getting a bit monotonous so you get distracted and ahhhh then an hour has past and you're not up to the conclusion but you have bought five things on ebay and watched a youtube video oopsy.

As a student on the forums, even just taking one paragraph and giving intense feedback on that, as opposed to doing the whole essay, could be very helpful too! I like working with small chunks because I genuinely like editing and playing with words, so you can do that specifically with a small chunk. My thesis statement for discovery was adjusted ever so slightly every day for several weeks until I got it to where I wanted it lol!

Peer marking is something my school encouraged pretty actively, and my little group of people did it a fair bit (my girlfriend and I would peer mark pretty much everything we wrote) ;D it's definitely beneficial to give feedback to someone else, for a variety of reasons :)

I personally love marking! I mean yes, of course there are other things I could be doing; but I think that it is worth it. If I can improve someones mark in a subject, and/or improve their confidence, then that makes it worth the time in my eyes :) the post-for-feedback policy helps immensely; because it means I can actually invest time and energy into the marking. If it was unrestricted, there is no way I could do that, I'd have to be jumping from essay to essay in 2 minutes flat ;)

Ah thanks

Also Jamon, what do you think of my essay marking skills?

I think you are offering good feedback, and it will only improve as you get into Year 12 and get a deeper understanding of the module and AoS aims, and develop your own analytical skills ;D don't do it if you find it annoying/irritating though, you don't owe anyone here anything, so as much as it will be beneficial for you it is definitely not something anyone here has to do :)

The reason why I do marking for others is because I think it will improve my english immensely. I have always been not that great at english for many years already and with the HSC coming up, I think it's time to change things around

I'm just curious but why doesn't Jake mark english?

Fair enough

Anyways, I had my chem prac and screwed up

This year, I haven't been able to do as well as I expected. I am worried about the HSC

I know that I'll have to spend heaps of time revising prelim chem because a lot of the stuff is coming up in the HSC

Any tips on how to bounce back?

I do advise spending some time on more important concepts such as mole calculations that are definitely necessary, but if you try to go through a whole bundle of the course you are wasting time.

Other than terminology and skills, there isn't a huge amount of HSC Chem that translates into the HSC. As you move into year 12, stay on top of the work as you go, do practice questions throughout your study, don't set too high expectations for yourself and basically just do the best you can. It isn't about bouncing back; it's about improving your study techniques, increase the time spent on the subject each week and paying attention in class. The curriculum is not so difficult once you've thought about it enough; there's a lot of memorisation, which isn't easy, but it isn't conceptually difficult either. You're going to be okay, just stay consistently focussed.
