There are the General Discussion Boards if you don't mind having a chit chat with us VCE'ers (to be fair tho VCE'ers are posting on the HSC thread anyway soooo...). Think you'll be a bit hard-pressed to find a board exclusive to HSC'ers free from us darned VCE kids that are just everywhere on this site. :P

Oh, okay. The thing is I don't want to end up chatting to kids from Vic because I got that feeling I'm going to be dead confused when it comes to talking about things related to the HSC (in NSW obviously)

Obviously, to my knowledge ATAR notes was created for Victorian students and the VCE (According to one NSW moderator)

Why would you be chatting about HSC related things in non-school related boards? We go there to escape  ;)

It was indeed started in VCE, but with more and more HSC students getting involved, in not too long the communities will both be the same size!  ;D

tbh after a bit you tend to know the difference between VCE and HSC. I read the hsc physics and chem boards all the time just out of interest (and revision coz a lot of stuff overlaps) but in the question types there is a very discernible difference :). But yeah till you realise that difference it can be very confusing :P

I should probably look into VCE maths now that I've done one semester of it at uni. I haven't done discrete maths though, if there's modulo equations and etc.

All you need to know about the VCE system in one little summary: VCAA (the people who make exams) are the bane of our existences.

I get your concern. All but one of my cousins went through the HSC system and I'm going through the VCE system and they start spouting off stuff like "pre-trials" and "units" and "bands" and for a long time I was soooo lost.

If you're interested, there's a nifty conversion table on the UAC site (http://www.uac.edu.au/undergraduate/admission/interstate.shtml#vic) that somewhat converts our study scores into your band-system which should alleviate any confusion that pops up whenever we bow down to people who get 50 study scores (lel one of my cousins thought that VCE kids were just underachieving cuz she thought 50 would be equivalent to like 50% or something). Beyond that, if you do choose to pop on over to the 2016 VCE'ers thread and ever feel any confusion, if you ask, we'll all be more than happy to clarify. :)

I wonder what their maths curriculum is like and how many people take the highest level of maths there

There are 5 levels of Mathematics studied in VCE. Generally, it is accepted that their highest level of mathematical study, Specialist Mathematics, is equivalent to Maths Extension 1 in difficulty, though different in its focus. Not sure about enrolment rates though  :)

I think I read somewhere that around 4000-6000 take specialist maths on average each year... but I could be entirely wrong

Functionally, though, there are really three levels (only three are at yr 12 level/contribute to the ATAR).  And yeah... the lack of any equivalent to MX2 is one of VCE's greatest failings. :P

As for enrollments, in 2015:
Bottom (Further): 31,300
Middle (Methods): 16,300
Top (Specialist): 4,500
VCE (2014): HHD, Bio, English, T&T, Methods

Uni (2021-24): Bachelor of Nursing @ Monash Clayton

Work: PCA in residential aged care

so they don't have a course equivalent to maths extension 2 in NSW?

Difficulty wise it appeared kind of "pfft" but in terms of relevance well at least there's no useless stuff like conics in there and they actually do statistics.

Not saying the person is useless just the topic is useless because of how they teach it.

SInce I'm not 100% sure how to multiquote things, I kinda have to do this spam like thing (sorry mods)

I read somewhere that in NSW, this is the rate of maths students doing certain courses

General Maths-approximately 30,000
MAths(2U)-approximately 16,000
Maths extension 1- approximately 9000
Maths extension 2- approximately 3000

As for the data, it's here http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/bos_stats/hsc-enrolment-snapshot-2015-course.html

so they don't have a course equivalent to maths extension 2 in NSW?

Nope! Although direct comparison is a little tricky, the course rationales are different and the content taught (as mentioned by Rui) isn't necessarily the same for the equivalent level. MX2 is arguably the highest level secondary math course in the country  :)

Thanks  ;)

BTW Jamon, they actually do have an equivalent of maths extension 2 in Victoria. I had a chat with some students in Victoria and they told me they actually do have an equivalent of extension 2 maths

http://www.uac.edu.au/documents/undergraduate/interstate/VIC_subject_comparison.pdf

I don't believe they do "harder extension 1 maths"
