Hey, i want to do engineering but I'm unsure of which is the best uni and which will present the best job opportunities for me. I also wish to know what the teaching and courses are like at each uni so those who have completed or are completing, its your time to shine :)

Waddddddduppppppp eth-dog.

Firstly, sick work on trying to make a good decision and get more information! If you need to speak to the unis directly they're definitely available to communicate with you.

Which is the best uni?
Well, all three of them have pretty good reputations. Monash and RMIT are held in really high regard from basically anyone I've ever talked to, ever. I hear about Melbourne engineering a little bit less... most of the people I've spoken to have either gone to Monash/RMIT or know someone who goes to Monash/RMIT.

Which will present the best job opportunities for you? Part 1
Both Monash and RMIT have industry experience components built into their degree.
RMIT: http://www1.rmit.edu.au/courses/050454
Monash: http://www.eng.monash.edu.au/current-students/cpd/

I am not sure if Melbourne have the same thing and couldn't fine information in the first two links of google, so, gave up.

Which will present the best job opportunities for you? Part 2
Probably the one that is closest to you, so you travel less, so you have more time to work or do other things beneficial to your future prospects.

It's also important to check the fee structures . UniMelb might be more expensive - if you do undergraduate Science then Postgrad Engineering it might cost you more than doing a normal undergraduate Engineering double degree. I'm not 100% sure about this but if you do it postgrad, usually the fees are higher.

What's closer to you between RMIT and Monash?

RMIT by a long way

Thanks for the reply its real helpful, I'm really torn between completing an undergrad engineering course through RMIT or Monash. I kinda also want to do the bach of science at melbourne but from what I've heard, its as good as rmit and monash in terms of job prospects.

A completely silly question that i would have no idea whether you would have any idea but what would you say is a good engineering course. This is why i wanted to go melbourne because it gives me time to think.

If RMIT is closest to you by a long way, then that is a very, very good reason to take RMIT Engineering over Monash Engineering. Engineering is a demanding course, so having less travel time means you have more time to relax or more time to study, both of which are excellent. More time to sleep even, because if you have an 8am class you might have to wake up way earlier to go to Monash compared to RMIT.

Travel time is seriously important - this is something Year 12s won't understand until they've done their first semester or even first year of uni.

Having time to think is a good thing though, that's true. That's the benefit of the Melbourne model. When you say good engineering course though, do you mean like... electrical, civil etc? or do you mean like, courses at RMIT, courses at Monash etc?

I really liked the RMIT campus as well but the only problem is i may not be able to get in the course. Also would you have any idea if doing a bachelor of science would at all benefit me in doing an post grad engineering course (i.e. melbourne structure). Because the main reason i want to do a bachelor of science at melbourne is because i feel like it may help with my additional studies plus doing a post grad in engineering would only accumulate 5 years worth of study. Compared to RMIT doing a bach of engineering straight out is only 4 years so I'm adding an extra year yet i learn more stuff (i think...).

Don't worry about what you might get into - just order your preferences in the order of what you most WANT, not what you most think you will get. Where you place things on your preference list doesn't increase/decrease the probability of getting into them.

Doing the extra year will probably give you some more learning but like.. if you took that year and worked full time after an engineering degree, you'd probably learn a lot from that as well. If you want to do a BSci there's definitely nothing wrong with that either!

Can I just say as well (I haven't done engineering so I won't comment on this discipline specifically), but travel time plays an important role in your uni life. I've been to two unis (La Trobe and Monash). When I was at La Trobe, I lived only about 10 minutes from campus so the travel time was extremely minimal. I'm at Monash now and have pretty much daily 8am classes, and it takes me around an hour and 15 to get there driving or 90 mins by PT. It all adds up - by the time you've finished for the day, you're absolutely exhausted.

For undergrad at least, I'd choose the uni that is closest to you purely for convenience (provided that the course is accredited). If you decide to go on and do postgrad, then you should consider what one has the 'best' standing and is most likely to get you a job. Cheers.

Really tough question to answer man, I'm not in the industry so I'm not 100% sure, but generally, my rule of thumb is "if you have a choice between more education and more work experience to get a job, take more work experience".

If someone had a Masters and no work experience, and someone else had a Bachelor's but one year work experience, personally, I would hire the second person literally every single time (other things being equal).
