Things you believed as a kid but don't anymore

This is going to be a fun thread  :P Just share things you believed as a kid but don't believe anymore!

When I was very young, I had dog years explained to me. I thought that meant dogs experienced time faster to us, and that's why they're always running and jumping around.

I also believed (again, very young, so sh!) that you could dye your hair different colours to have kids with different coloured hair.

Up until the age of 13 (yep...) I genuinely thought it was illegal to dye your hair before you turned 18. I also thought that the throat was divided into two throats (?) - one for drinking and one for eating (I think I believed we had a food stomach and a drink stomach as well?)

Interesting idea! I'm sure there's many more, but at the top of my head I used to think it was against school rules to hiccup (once in prep I got hiccups and I freaked out). Also, I used to think people in movies/TV shows only 'fake kissed' in kissing scenes as the actors weren't really in relationships. And this one's a bit personal, but due to my upbringing I used to think any couple that got divorced must completely hate each other afterwords... I was shocked at my friends party when her divorced parents were causally talking xD

Nothing beats the ol' spending your young childhood thinking it was illegal to drive with the lights on inside of your car at night :P

I believed in the throat one too, as did many people I know, hmm. I wonder if this is likr wanting to be a marine biologist -- something everyone oddly goes through.

Ooh, I've never heard the hiccups one before! I can see why it'd be believable to a child -- disrupting class is a big no-no and hiccups are disruptive.

That divorce one is probably quite common; I believed that up until a few years ago myself :)

My housemate (on his green P's) actually told me that last week, hmm

Used to believe that inanimate objects had feelings. If I left anything outside overnight, I thought they would hate me for leaving them out in the cold.

literally everyone at some point wants to be a marine biologist. I can't remember which thread this was determined in - but it is a confirmed fact. I am the least science-y person (re. my long-held belief we have two throats 😂  and my unwavering support of the UNSW Flat-Earth Society #teachtheconspiracy) but even I fell victim.

I've never mentioned this on AN before but I certainly went through a phase as well...this is spooky!
I was like omg yes I want to do this (when I was a wee kid obviously) and mum liked to snuff out my dreams by telling me I'd never get a job because of the scarce job market for marine biologists. Harsh words for a young kid in primary school :P But probably true, nonetheless.

I thought it was a rule that you had to hold your breath when driving past cemeteries. Not really sure why - I assume my parents told me that for some reason. ???

Also, my Dad always used to say that we were passing the "dead centre" of Melbourne when going by a cemetery, so I thought that all of the cemeteries were all clumped in the middle of the city. It wasn't until fairly recently that I worked out that pun hahaha.

No, the cemetery thing is actually established fact - you have to hold your breath and squeeze your nose, lest you inhale spirits of the dead.
