Hi Jamon,

Really struggling with my Co-Op application. I can't seem to get the words out. I don't know what I should be talking about to make my application attractive. Could you proofread this answer for me? And also, is it okay that I am talking about an unrelated activity (dance) for "Describe an achievement in the workplace and/or designing, building, programming or creating something. Your example might relate to recent work experience, a part time job or a major non-school based project you have undertaken. You might choose to highlight your creativity; the ability to see alternatives; come up with many varied or original ideas; or willingness to try/learn new things."
Dance is an activity that I have been committed to for the past 6 years so I thought it is the best to talk about in this question. Will the interviewers look on this favourably?

I think using Dance is a great idea! I used my Music composition for that question, it’s good to use something that is very “you.” That answer works well, if anything maybe try and frame it more around one singular project rather than a bunch of smaller stuff, make it all about one “achievement” or “creation.”

my ranks are pretty average (19th in Physics and 4th in IPT are my best, 204 in english is my worst)
do the interviewers also take into account the ranks as well;?: cus then im stuffed !
Hey there,
Just to extend on Jamon's answer, I highly doubt the interviewers will ask about ranks/marks. Coming from personal experience, when I went to my UTS interview, my half-yearly marks were meh (I was just under a pass for physics, barely scraped a pass for 2U math and didn't get anywhere near a pass in 3U math) and they didn't even ask about it and they had the copy of my application there- all they did was ask about the experiences I included in the application. Sure it's not UNSW but I hope this is an indication on how scholarship interviews generally work :)

on a side-note, I noticed that they are not offering the Mechatronic Engineering degree for the Co-op Scholarship.
Does this mean that I have to remove my mechatronic engineering course preference from the UAC course preferences?

No, you can keep it there! But you won’t be able to accept the scholarship if you choose to study that degree (if you get it, they ask you to move the relevant course to the 1st preference slot anyway)

I know this isn't co-op (sorry!), but I was wondering about the UNSW Med applications. Their first question is "Describe yourself in 30 words or less", do they want just a quick overview of your character or what you value

With absolutely no knowledge of any hidden Med tricks, yep that is just asking for a brief overview of “you.” Character, interests, whatever you think is most important for them to know

Hey guys,
I think dermite also asked this, but the Co-op application asks for Year 12 yearly results and Trial results. Is there a difference between these two?

Also, with the referees, do we need two or can we also have one? At the moment I have my careers adviser but if I need a second one, can I use someone that's not a teacher or does it have to be academic?

Thanks Jamon!

On another note, I was wondering whether I should apply for Co-op. Like my question above suggests, med has always been my dream, but after my trial marks  I don't know whether it is possible and whether I should apply to all other possibilities as well?

If Coop happens to align with something you’d like to study, then absolutely, but don’t apply because of the financial or prestige factor alone. Like, if your primary reason for picking a degree is to get a scholarship, you are doing it wrong, if that makes sense

If a degree that offers Coop was on your radar anyway, then absolutely!

I supplied my Trials marks and my most recent report, which I think was half-Yearly? Just give them what you can

As for referees, I honestly can’t recall but I am almost positive you could have a non-academic referee. They’d probably like to see variety, actually!

Tbh, I don't know much about Coop but your advice was completely valid there! I cannot agree more and there is a particular co-op degree I was interested in before :)
It was more about whether looking for another degree would be giving up on my dreams or not... or whether it was just being realistic!

Definitely the latter! Like, having a backup plan isn't giving up, it is just being intelligent about important decisions in your life ;D

Hey guys,
I realise that in the 'supporting documents' section for the Co-op application requires me to register my career adviser for the Schools Assessment. Is this different to the two referees I need to provide or do I also put down my career adviser as one of the two referees?

Different if you want it to be!

Hi Jamon, thanks for the feedback for my response.

I took on board your feedback and rewrote my response

Describe an achievement in the workplace and/or designing, building, programming or creating something. Your example might relate to recent work experience, a part time job or a major non-school based project you have undertaken. You might choose to highlight your creativity; the ability to see alternatives; come up with many varied or original ideas; or willingness to try/learn new things.
For the past six years, I have been an active performer both in school based cultural events along with participating in external events. I have delving into my artistic passion for dancing. From a young age, due to have limited access to external dance training, I have been learning dance online through tutorials, and have self-choreographed routines to songs of my own liking. My passion in all forms of dance is shown through teaching myself hip hop and Indian cultural dance online, and performing my routines in front of large audiences. A particular achievement was in 2016, where I had challenged myself by working with other students in creating an evocative modern dance routine as part of our dramatic performance.  I had single handedly choreographed and taught my fellow team members participating and thought of costume ideas and formations. I had also experimented by fusing multiple dance styles together to cater to individual talents and learning ability. Our team’s creativity was appreciated by our drama teacher, who had selected us to perform on stage in front of a large audience of 700 students. This moment was a particular achievement for me, as it involved me stepping outside my comfort zone to a style I was previously unfamiliar with, and required me to develop stronger communication skills in order to correct misunderstandings whilst teaching choreography. It also helped me build my confidence as I was given the opportunity to share my passion through entertaining the public, and simultaneously educate my team members on the intricacies of contemporary dance practice and how to engage with the music through varied movement and synchronisation.

Also, I don't really know how to particularly address the following question: What sort of graduate position do you imagine yourself in after University? I feel like this is a trick question to differentiate applicants. How can I make my answer not cheesy and predictable? This is what I wrote because I was really stumped

If being granted the opportunity to be a Co-Op Scholar, I would utilise the transferrable skills obtained to cater towards my personal objective in creating and managing my own start up enterprise. The skills I will obtain from studying marketing regarding the creation of a personal brand image will enable me to better service my employer in creating personality, differentiation and competitive advantage for a company.
