WEEKEND Q+A #10: POTATOHATER
SUNDAY 19TH: 3PM - 6PM

A LITTLE ABOUT POTATOHATER

Hey! I’m Taylor!

I’m a quidditch playing dancer, filmmaker, theatre nerd and journal addict who completed the HSC in 2017.

I took, and loved, advanced English, general maths, Drama, Biology and Geography, and left with 3 band 6’s and an ATAR wayyyyy higher than I needed. But I’d say the greatest achievement is being able to do the HSC whilst also having a life, as I also danced, debated, was in the school musical, went out with my friends and had a fast food job (eww). So yeah, you could say it was pretty full on.

As for what my post high school life entails, I am currently doing a Bachelor of Arts majoring in English and theatre & performance studies at USyd (the hardest decision but the best one!), whilst also playing an absolute tonne of quidditch (#thirdMajor?) taking on production crew roles with the dramatic society, dancing, working as a tutor and debate adjudicator and volunteering as a REELise youth ambassador. So yeah, you could say this year is just as full on as the last!

So ask me anything! From how I manage my life all the way down to why I don’t like potatoes. No question is too big, small, stupid or intelligent, they are all welcome and appreciated. So ask away!

HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?

How shall you be celebrating National Potato Day today?

Any film/theatre projects lined up?

Favourite part about USYD?
Which will hold greater rule over you? Your fear or your curiosity?

Hi, Tay! I got a couple :3

So... why do you hate potatoes?
How long have you been dancing?
What's your favourite kind of flower and why?
What's your favourite* part of the uni course you're currently enrolled in? The worst?
What do you think about joined us on an AN roadtrip?
What do you pride yourself in being able to make (food-wise)?

Thank you!
*Bea got in ahead of me haha <3

This Q&A of course! I totally planned it as a celebration of potatoes...

For theatre projects:
At the moment I’m finishing up being publicity manager for “The Goat or who is Sylvia?” And starting to take on the role of graphic designer and publicity manager for “Every Second” Both of which are produced by the dramatic society.
For film:
I have to make a short clip for REEL voices this month about protecting yourself online, and there will be more next month but I havnt been told what they are going to be about yet.

Favourite part about USYD?
Definatley the social life, in particular Quidditch, and the fact that I can easily go out with them to Newtown or Glebe etc. on a friday night. I also like studying (with Quidditch people) in Fisher Library A LOT. So basically, Quidditch really  :P

1. They are mushy, bland and DISGUSTING ewww
2. Since year 10 with a small break over HSC period so that would be about 3.5 years now roughly
3. I’ve never thought of that before, but I think I’ll say Lavender cause it smells really nice, or Nastursiums because you can eat them.
4. I love how I have the ability to study what I want and make it as general or specific to my life goals as I want, I particularly like my unit choices for this sem, which is 2 English units and a drama and they are very interesting! HOWEVER I hate how much reading there is and how one of my units has a 2 hour lecture. I cant stay awake in a 1 hour lecture let alone 2! So I skip them, and fall behind, and ARRGHHH! Yeah... I feel 2 months behind and its only week 3 (help me)
5. I’d totally join an AN road trip! We just need to crash some different quidditch club trainings as we do so  :P
6. Food wise, I cant make much. I can make quiche, that’s the fanciest thing. Other than that I make a lot of good toasties  ;)
Fave quidditch team from Melb and why? ;)
Melbourne Unicorns because they are nice people and easy to beat  ;)

You say you got an ATAR higher than you needed - Do you regret working as hard as you did in the HSC? Wish you'd relaxed more, or maybe even still wish you'd worked harder? What's your retrospective now that you are studying what you love? ;D

How did you get into playing Quidditch? Can we expect any answers in video form? ;)
You could potentially have answers in video form if it wasn’t for the fact I’m trying to catch up on lectures and videos take time, but we will see  ;)

As for quidditch, I played it twice in a year 10 pe class. The rules were dodgy then but I didnt know that. I loved it and actually liked sport for once, so at uni I knew I had to try it out!
I didn’t expect to get this involved though, the turning point was definatley the first “Foodie Friday” event where I started to make some friends, and the USQL the following day (which I only signed up for cause I thought my crush was going). That USQL (University of Sydney Quidditch League - USyd internal tournament) really made me love the game and my obsession has increased ever since.

What has been the most unexpected thing about being a reelise youth ambassador ?
Becoming one in the first place TBH. I was told only the winners of the REEL Voices competition earlier in the year were going to be ambassadors, and since I didnt win I wasn’t expecting them to offer me the role. Other than that, it’s a pretty new commitment so no other unexpected things yet.

And before I forget-

What camera and lens did you use in your intro video aha. The quality is amazing
Ahhh thanks! That’s my Sony, which I won unexpectedly in a competition I didnt know I was in haha (My teacher entered a video assignment of mine and didnt tell me)
So it’s an interchangeable lense compact - Sony alpha 5000 with the lense it came with, can’t work out what the name is, it says 3.5-5.6/16-50 (???)

You say you got an ATAR higher than you needed - Do you regret working as hard as you did in the HSC? Wish you'd relaxed more, or maybe even still wish you'd worked harder? What's your retrospective now that you are studying what you love? ;D
No regrets, because if I’d slacked off more I might not have gotten in at all, you can never tell. Plus, I was aiming for 95+ for personal satisfaction, and whilst I didnt hit it, I came close enough. Maybe I should have worked harder to hit that 95 but at the same time I am quite happy with my HSC/Life balance in the end. Plus, my ATAR did get me into the advanced stream for my 1st sem geo unit so it did come in handy. So overall I think I’m happy with how things turned out.  ;D
If I was able to change one thing though, I would have dropped to 10 units wayyy earlier, that 10 unit life was so good and who knows what could have been accomplished if I’d done that from the start of the year 12 year.

I get that this question is a little out of the way but here goes:
If you were marooned on an island surrounded by sharks, and the only your source of food is potatoes, would you just die, or eat potatoes?

Also a question I'm going to have to ask literally every mod:
Marvel or DC?
