Should I get a laptop?

Hey

I am considering buying a new laptop (reasonably priced) for Year 12.

I would use it for English, Latin, and Economics. I would not use it for French and Methods.

Now, would you consider it a good idea instead of handwriting everything into a messy notebook? Then around exam time, I can print it all out and have some good study material.

I think so, especially for english where I didn't even have an exercise book last year!

What are you opinions? One of my friends said not to because you remember things more if you handwrite them.....

It depends on the person.

Handwriting works best for me and i don't do work properly on the computer because of distractions.

As long as you make sure you backed up all your work. There is always the risk of problems occuring and loosing all your notes.

Ok a couple of things to consider.
  • Consider your writing speed vs your typing speed - ie do you type fast enough?
  • Will there be distractions as SilverBullet mentioned? Will the computer itself be a distraction rather than things on it?
  • How well will you remember what you type? I find that writing and typing makes no difference in remembering for me, but as your friend said, some people remember things more if they handwrite it. Test yourself. Get a parent/sibling/friends to read some stuff out, write some things for you to copy etc then compare the results.

Because the end of year exams must be handwritten, I would suggest that you stick with handwriting. You know you've made it when you have that ugly writing callous on your middle or index finger (depending on how you hold your pen).

Yeah, I agree with Eriny, I don't think a laptop is necessary for year 12 seeing as you'll have to write your exams anyway, so why not practice your handwriting legibility / speed etc while you still can. I wouldn't even take my laptop to uni because I figured I'd need practice writing stuff really fast and clearly to prepare for exams (where I'll have to write a shitload of stuff). Don't bother with a laptop, I think it's a waste of money.

Laptop == Overkill for year 12.

You might find use for them at Uni. I haven't, however. The only thing they're good for is doing assignments in the library (because you're working in your own desktop environment etc etc - and it saves queuing for a computer during busy times).

personally i prefer handwriting because i got a laptop and it's very distracting. Especially if your school has wireless internet available. i used the laptop for half of the year last year and it was no good because of the distractions and the sound of typing kind of annoyed the class and carrying the thing around everywhere was pretty annoying. Then second half of the year i was handwriting notes and it's much better, don't have to carry notes around everywhere, less distractions more productive.

But in the end it's up to you, if you can avoid the temptations of other applications of the laptop then go for it but remember you will be carrying it around EVERYWHERE.

Personally I wouldn't like carrying my laptop around school (for one, no one in my school does it) but I do like to use my laptop to write up notes from the textbook at home because although it is troublesome sometimes, it is MUCH neater and i can change the colour/formatting or add/subtract stuff from the notes whenever i want...
