Its not weird at all. You can't expect to get anything above a 40 if you only get an A on the exam (for eco that is).

From the VCAA website:
Quote
The third step is to use the external scores of the moderation group to adjust the school coursework scores for the group. To do this, the moderation procedure ensures that:

    * the highest* moderated score is made equal to the highest external score

http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/exams/statisticalmoderation/statmod.html

GA1 must have been a low A+ so it went all the way to B+, GA2 must have been a bit higher so it only went down to A.

Hopefully this makes sense and is correct as I only had a look at the moderation process this morning.

Your sac marks are meant to be reflective of your exam performance. considering that you, as the first ranked student, who only received an A it would make sense that the A+ is scaled down to an A or a B+.

But an A+ to a B+? That's been scaled down too much.

Your internal grade means nothing. Only your actual ranking does. You can't compare your internal grade to what it means externally; that's the point of scaling. If you were ranked first or second however, then something's strange.

Yeah I was first in my cohort in all but one of my SACs where I tied. I have heard that poor performance in the cohort leads to scaling down on marks, is that true?

What do you classify as a 'low A+'. Internally assessed, GA1 was at 94 - 95%.

Hmm but no matter what an A+ is still clearly higher than 2 A's. Maybe you should get a SoM or something?

it's actually quite common for either of the exams or even both, to have 10% get an A+. it was the case for this year's midyear. perhaps the exam 2 was 10% as well?
you must have had the 1% lowest exam A+ mark on one or both exams, or/and your sac ranking must have been quite weak.

therefore due to 9% is 40+, you were just under, getting a 39... bad luck i'm afraid :P

Hmm yeah i was ranked about in the middle of our cohrot for sacs, and I dont think my raw sac marks would have gotten me an A+, but the cohort was strong so I probably got boosted up to a low A+. Exams mustve been low, but opening the results and seeing 39 with those marks was kinda disappointing

So not looking forward to next year... :(
I don't really understand about the ranking in a cohort, how does that affect anything?

I don't really understand about the ranking in a cohort, how does that affect anything?

Firstly, the mark you get on the SACs do not matter.  For example, if you get 99% in a Chem SAC and everyone else in your Chem cohort gets 100%.  So even though a 99% is an excellent SAC mark, however relative to the Chem cohort, it isn't because you are ranked last.

But what if I am ranked first?  How does that affect my study score?
Well, if you are ranked first in all the SACs for a particular subject, then as you know SAC marks are moderated by VCAA based on how well your cohort does in the exam(s).  So if you are ranked first in the SACs, then you will get the highest moderated SAC mark.  The person ranked second will get the second highest moderated SAC mark?

Does this change my exam mark?
No, your exam mark will stay the same.  The exams change your SAC marks (if permissible), not vice versa.
