Diploma in Mathematical Sciences
Description

The Diploma in Mathematical Sciences enables students to gain a mathematics qualification while completing an undergraduate degree. You will study first-year calculus and linear algebra, followed by a choice of later-year subjects from applied mathematics, pure mathematics, probability, statistics, discrete mathematics and operations research. Mathematics and statistics provide important insights into nature, technology and business. They are ‘enabling’ disciplines which are directly relevant to many other disciplines and complement most majors in all new generation degrees. Students may be eligible to receive the final 50 points of the Diploma HECS-free.

Structure

The Diploma in Mathematical Sciences is a three-year sequence totalling 100 points (equivalent to one-year full-time study) taken concurrently with a new generation bachelors degree. The Diploma consists of subjects from the major in Mathematics and Statistics available within the Bachelor of Science course. You will study first-year calculus and linear algebra, followed by a choice of later-year subjects from applied mathematics, pure mathematics, probability, statistics, discrete mathematics and operations research.

I'm a little confused. This may sound a little silly, but will the stuff learnt in UMEP Maths be equivalent to Diploma in Mathematical Sciences? (it's a one-year course btw

It will not. UMEP Maths is only the equivalent of one subject at first year level.

yea UMEP only gains you exemption from accelerated maths 1-a first semester subject

pretty much, i think that in umep, we do a more than uni students would do in just accelerated maths one tho...

there has a been a shift to much more of an emphasis on linear algebra tho recently in umep

I think you need an A+ in the equivalent 1/2 subject.

Is it hard to do a UMEP subject in good schools? Because you have to be top 5% of the cohort, apparently..

if you get can get a's in GMA and get above 40 ish you could probs get away with 37, you will get in, if your shcool is happy for you to do so

in the nicest possible way, then mabey that means you shoudn''t do umep. In all seriousness, umep maths is a pretty hard slog. Like i know kyzoo and meself both find umep very challenging, most of the time in the lecture, we don;t understand what going on, we just copy down whats happening on the baord and have to work thu the notes at home to actually understand what going on. This is opposed to spech where, while it is by no means easy, i will actually understand everything that is going on on the board when the teacher writes is down. As oppsoed to umep, when i'm alwys dazzles and about 3-4 examples behind.

yea, basically, there's a reson why they require you to have A's in GMA, and that is to make sure you can cope with the course

having said, that i am a very strong advocate for doing umep and think that it is a fantastic subject to challenge yourself if you like maths and is very rewarding when you are able to do a tricky problem.

Of course you're a strong advocate of UMEP Maths! After all, you dream of maths So do you reckon there's more of a workload for UMEP Maths than your other VCE subjects (lucky year 12 with only 4 subjects )?

ok, well. Uni maths is not like a normal subjects. Lol, it's a uni subject (sorry to point out the obvious)

Like, tbh, if i could have it my way, my time wound be spent only doing spech and uni maths. However, that's not possible bcs of stupid eng and to a lesser extent chem.

Because uni maths is never checked up on, i do tend to push it to a side in favour of my latest chem/eng sac.

i generally work in like, cramming a few weeks of uni maths into a one day session on a weekend.

We do get given quite a bit of hw, like questions to do, and you alwys have to go back and review notes, but tbh, the work load is still less than a normal vce subject. Plus you have the flexibility of doing it when you want.

It's reli up to you to do the work regularly(ish) so that you wont get a nast surprise wehn exams come around. Again, exactly like uni.

Of course you get assingments, two per term and these are actually marked by your lecturer, but lol, everybody just pretty end us wokring togeather on these assingments/one person doing all the work and the other ppl copying

And maybe the workload is less than a normal VCE subject, but not that much less. At the very least, the theory is harder than Spesh.

i do them myself, but, like for the last assingment, i copied question 3b off joyce before class cos i couldn't do it

and yea, defs saem, the work laod might be less, but the theory is many steps up from spech in term of difficulty

Lol do you do UMEP maths at my school too? How many people from MGGS this year doing it? I'm guessing about 3 as well?
