Double bond is a functional group. So I would say yes to functional group.

Benzene is a functional group? I think perhaps the double bond IN the benzene is a functional group

"double bond" not double bond

this is where a lot of the confusion stems from....

Benzene is a functional group, as are double bonds.

A benzene ring is NOT a functional group.
It is just the structure of a particular hydrocarbon.
Is ethane a function group? Or ethene?
No they are not. What you are asking is like asking those above questions.
Answer is also confirmed with my chemistry teacher :P

I was told by my uni chemistry teacher, and a vce chem lecturer that multiple bonds are a functional group and so is benzene. pretty sure i believe them and benzene should be anyway since the 'phenols' are characterised by their inclusion of the functional group 'benzene'

Yes benzene itself is NOT a functional group, but phenyl is the NAME of the functional group.
It's just like saying methane is a functional group- that is wrong, it is called a methyl functional group.

Benzene is not a functional group. Much like a methane or ethane are not functional groups.

Arene, aryl or phenyl are functional group, these are substituted benzene rings. Similarly, methyl and ethyl (or in general, alkyl) are functional groups.

yeah phenyl is pretty much benzene-R
i didn't mean benzene alone, but when it's attached to anything it's a functional group as 'phenyl'
and vcaa recognises this apparently, as if they say circle the functional groups, you'd be correct to circle benzene.
benzene as a functional group= C6H5-R

Then it's not benzene anymore...
