Does he teach any lower than MM 1/2?

Yeah, Levels 1 & 2 are competition maths :)

I love the way he says 'arbitrary constant' when we're doing integration :P

A teacher who only takes in students who are already good at maths is not a real teacher.

( I fell I'm going to regret saying this )

Sure he only takes good students, but his teaching methods are first-rate :)

A student who can't pass his test isn't going to get anything out of his teachings anyway. Even those who pass the test struggle to keep up.

I agree with taiga style
if he really wanted to be a teacher, he would want to teach those who struggle with maths. Being a teacher shouldn't be about boasting about how many 50's you get or 40+. Obviously if you have there is an exam requirement the students will get higher than those helping out regular kids.

Dr. He is targetting a different type of student then those who "struggle with maths". What is wrong with a tutor whose objective is to allow students who may usually get a 45 try and achieve a 50?
There are many tutors out there who will try and improve students who "struggle with maths".
There is no point in making ridiculous assertions Jdog regarding what makes a good teacher. You don't know Dr. He and I don't either. I still admire him though for his obvious ability of making good students into great students.

Yep, to be honest, we all (apart from his son :P) seem like dud students to him anyway, most of us struggle with his homework and exams etc.
I've gotten so much out of my three years in his classes, and his teaching style is amazing

i don't disagree he is a great teacher, and that many students profit from what he does, however maybe if he allowed "not so bright" students he would be catering to a wider audience. I am just saying what i believe, and for they aren't "ridiculous assertations"

The problem with having a "wide audience" in a class is that students would be at varying levels with their mathematics, so the teacher would need to cater for all levels, making effective teaching much harder. This is why, in many schools, streaming is implemented to distinguish said levels; it just makes things a whole lot easier.

If he caters for the lower level students the high band students are disengaged. If he caters for the higher level students the lower level students are flabbergasted. Most teaching environments have to maintain a mix; so, in fact, both groups are receive ill-fitting instruction.

He is one place where a good student can come and expect to have quality teaching at their standard.

Is it wrong to create an environment where excellence is embraced?

Yes but by the sounds of things the "not so bright" students would probably be worse off if they attended his classes.
They may just end up confused and lacking even more confidence as a result of being exposed to his challenging questions.

There are plenty of tutors for "not so bright" students, Dr. He is different as he only caters to high achievers.
