Biomed - Monash or UoM

I saw another thread regarding this but that was double degree. What about just Biomedicine for these two uni's. I might fall short of a 97.9 needed for UoM and might have to just stick with Monash but IF I make it, which one is better?

Also does it really matter which University? I mean at the end its the work you put it in right??
Thanks

At UoM they're pushing integration much more than Monash, but the degrees are pretty equivalent in terms of future prospects. If you live particularly close to Clayton or Parkville, those are also concerns to consider.

Melbourne has recently done/commenced some seriously impressive renovations to facilities that you'll be able to use but I assume Monash also has high quality stuff. When choosing between Monash/UoM, there's not al lot of difference quality wise (generally)

do you know what type of majors u want to do?
do u want to do research or is it a bridge to medicine?

in any case monash is very good for research
but yeah both are very good unis
and definitely which uni is closer to you?

I am completely clueless on the whole majors and side subjects etc. Is there a guide anywhere here? Like how many majors do I pick and "side subjects" and when do I drop them etc.

But I'm picking Biomed as I heard it leads into a lot of fields. Like it can take you into anything in science which is good for me because I havent decided what exact field.

I think Monash is closer.

heres the course description
http://monash.edu/pubs/handbooks/courses/2230.html
and you can major in any of these
http://www.monash.edu/study/coursefinder/course/2230/study-area.html

although it is more restricted than science since they structure most of the course so you have a little less to worry about

well it can lead you into those major fields...but really the decision is mainly done in 3rd year

heh distance was one of the major influence to get into monash

oh so you have to pick those certain ones and the 12 elective points are like your "fun subjects"?
And in your third area you have to specify what field you want to enter?

you know what.... i think you don't "have to" major in anything... you can specialise if you want to...because basically the course is structured in a way to cover all broad aspects of biomedical science so you can still do honours by just completing the biomed degree, although obviously it will be helpful if u do honours (if u do do that) in the field u specialise in

i think only in science where you have to major

any confirmation of this would be good

IRRC, you don't major in anything in biomedical science.

Imo go for the convenient option, you will not find an opinion that is not biased, no one here has done biomed @ monash and biomed @ melb at the same time to be able to compare. Both can lead to research as well as pgrads so no obvious disadvantage. For me personally, i decided monash biomed over melb because 15 min travel time vs 90 min, as well as monash having double degrees.

Yeah, but Monash seems to be the one he's leaning towards so majors at UoM won't help so much :P

You graduate soon yeah?

Hey Russ,

If I did do a biomed degree. And, heaven forbid, didn't get into grad med. Would I somehow be able to study engineering?

Yeah I heard you just have to do a basic biomed degree like not specialise in anything.

I dont think travelling is THAT much of an issue. I mean travelling an extra 20 minutes to a better uni is always worth it.

but yes, looks like im leaning towards Monash. However Melb uni. is my first preference and Monash my second. In the unlikely event I sneak in for that 97.9 can I reject it and accept Monash?
