Why is UoM Biomed in so much more demand and popularity than the Monash Biomed? There is a difference of around 6/7 ATAR points..

probably because lots of people think that if they do biomed, then they can automatically get into graduate medicine. they think hey!! medicine for an enter of 98!! then lots of them get in and end up disappointed..
apparently the same thing happens at monash, in the hope that they can get into melbourne grad medicine, but naturally nowhere near as much as melbourne where the course is..

What? I don't think anyone in biomed is stupid enough to think that "they can automatically get into graduate medicine" by doing biomed. That's just retarded..

agreed

i think the majority of us take the course knowing we will have to work our butts off to maintain the highest GPA possible and try for graduate med

Don't forget people do Biomed because UoM is the only university that offers Optometry and there's also Dentistry. It's not all about Med.
Feel free to message on dentistry questions

+1. Could people really be that naive? If they managed to get into biomed you'd think they'd have more common sense to see that it's gonna be very tough to get in. I'm not expecting med at all personally. I'm just gonna do my best and hope for the best. But at the end of the day there's multiple graduate options that I like so I'm not too worried about the prospects after I finish. And I'm sure many others are the same!

2010 ATAR: 98.35 - Psychology [50] Media Studies [47
2011-'13: Bachelor of Biomedicine [Neuroscience Major] at Melbourne Uni
2014-'17: Doctor of Medicine (MD) at Melbourne Uni

There are plenty of students who go into first year (biomed and science) wanting to do grad med but not knowing anything about the entry requirements.

me too, med is what i want eventually but this way i get to branch out a little and be a 'more well rounded student' and figure out if med is what i really want seeing as my UMAT was disastrous im not sure if im cut out for it. if i get to the end and dont want med i'll have a degree and hopefully a diploma of languages too:)

Don't mean state the obvious, but if med is what you want to do don't let your umat results discourage you. Your umat score does not necessarily determine whether you'll make a good doctor or not..

QUESTION:

since there r so manyy people who got into science and biomed @ uom... 3 years later, what degree do you actually get as in career wise.

and for those who want to get into the medicine and other master degrees what is the % of ppl that are accepted and what happens to those who fail the test and dont get accepted D:

cause i was thinking of transferring but it might be risky that i dont get accepted T__T

You get a BSc/BBiomed and without further study it's mostly research/lab work/teaching etc. style jobs. Hard to leverage a bachelor's degree into a great job in science fields. Most go back for masters level education and even PhDs eventually.

Medicine has a lowish success rate, no idea on percentages. Lot of applicants won't get interviews but of those that do, 80% get in. If you don't get in...do something else. Attempt entry next year, start a Masters, get a job etc.
