Any way for at least the mods to see who -1'd stuff? Or at least the admins?

So are we really going to start having karma/respect police now? :P

Letting mods/admins see it (I'm sure admins can anyway =.=) would reintroduce people being unwilling to -1 a post. If people knew that I could see if they -1'd me, I think they would think twice about doing so, and hence create an unfair buffer between mod/admin posts and normal members.

Well I don't think it's going to be something we're going to be particularly strict on. Myself and I assume most of the other mods generally don't bother acting in grey areas due to the difficulty in making a correct decision, or just laziness (i.e. me). But if there's blatant abuse of the system as has happened to pi, then that's when we could step in I guess. There's nothing wrong with giving a -1 if you actually believe the post actually deserves it. Once again, if it's a grey area then it's unlikely it'll be challenged. But I don't think the border between helpful and unhelpful is that grey at all. Most posts that have been downvoted so far have understandably been downvoted and that's why I haven't cared. But if there's blatant abuse, someone needs to know about it. I just feel that people are downvoting on the basis of who the poster is right now rather than on the merit of the post itself. There's definitely several members being targeted at the moment. Perhaps just let us see who's been doing the voting in something a little more out of the way (profiles, admin tabs etc) so that we're not constantly aware, but can check when need be.

But overall, I'm still questioning the usefulness of this system. People seem to have a far higher inclination to neg than to vote up a post. I've noticed many posts breaking the -5 mark whereas the +3 mark is rarely ever broken - even for very helpful posts. As with life I guess, people are far more inclined to give criticism than praise, especially anonymously, and this is essentially the reverse of the karma system where the majority was praise. I feel this is just going to make things really negative around here. I can foresee this turning into a massive bitchfest-downvote-retaliation party some time in the future, where people are just going to downvote each other for the hell of it because they suspect the other person's been doing the same. For this system to work, it really depends on more people voting because I think it's quite evident even without knowing who's been voting that the numbers are currently being dictated by just a select few really. If more people voted, these grudges wouldn't really matter too much because the effect of their vote becomes negligible. But really, I think the system needs to change somewhat because this isn't working too well and won't even if the mods can see who's been voting. We can't exactly force people to vote either, whereas an incentive to vote doesn't work all too well either. So yeh, I'm not exactly sure what there is to do to fix it...

I like the idea proposed a few months ago when the karma debate was on: ditch all 'vote' or 'karma' systems. If someone would like to thank someone, they can PM them, and if the public thinks someone is trolling or being a douche, they can click 'report to moderator'.

I don't think thats true. I mostly +1 posts.

One reason we are seeing more negative votes than positive is that with the new system it is painless, involving no page refresh and is just one simple click. That means people no longer have to justify why they're voting down a post they consider useless/off-topic, and I think we all agree there are plenty of 'useless' posts around.

Over time, some users who post for the sake of posting will refrain due to the negative feedback, and only submit actual contributions to a topic.

As pissed as I was about my essay forum suggestion receiving -8 respect you've got to realise this is only a forum. It's not like any other respect or karma system is going to revolutionise anything. This post is probably ironic though, cause it'll be neg respected for sure. But anyway, that's my stance.

I feel that the system was working better in its first week than it is now

I quite like the anonymity thing.
Anonymity leads to easier trolling (of voting). And thats what is happening lately.

I'm not really sure how this fits into everything, but so far I've been trying to counter abuse of the negative system (ie; whoever keeps down-voting all pi's posts) by up-voting them just to bring them back to zero. If enough people are conscious of system abuse and are willing to work against it, I'm sure most trolling could be removed without having to make drastic changes to the forum again.

fatty boom bahs LOL!

Thanks Ghost! :)

If enough people are conscious of system abuse and are willing to work against it, I'm sure most trolling could be removed without having to make drastic changes to the forum again.

I do this when people randomly -1 posts in Maths and Chem threads (and to werdna's -8 post) when people are providing a helpful solution (that probably contributes to my massive vote-count), but I don't do it every time I see a -1 (and I'm sure Ghost! doesn't either). It helps, but doesn't alleviate the situation unfortunately because, as you said, not enough people do it...

I Lol'd

@nacho precisely, I think respect has evened out the playing field, and turned this into a competitive warfare for whos doing the most "goody goody," and stoning the ones who are just slightly off the topic or do not conform to the expectations of the thread, aka werdna's -8 down vote respect. lol

Some people take respect seriously.

About Philosophy

When I see a youth thus engaged,—the study appears to me to be in character, and becoming a man of liberal education, and him who neglects philosophy I regard as an inferior man, who will never aspire to anything great or noble. But if I see him continuing the study in later life, and not leaving off, I should like to beat him - Callicle

That is not a good solution. If you can prove all the people who downvote are trolls, then please let mods know and we will take actions to stop these trolling. If you cannot prove this, that someone may have a valid reason for downvoting, and you are simply upvoting because there is a downvote, then essentially you are voting up a rubbish post just because.

As I read somewhere before, I would very much like it to be 'respect where respect is due'. Vote up if you find it was a helpful post, not because there is a negative there.

People who have voted the most posts (ie. every time a user clicks an arrow and doesn't un-click it). LOL, I've voted so much (as m@tty pointed out to me)!

(But then again, I did go through all the resources threads of my subjects and +1 each post that I have found useful... eg. in this thread. Is that allowed?).
