Doesn't MacRob ditch uniform for yr12s in winter months? Doesn't seem to effect their performance or the 'school image' in any way...
Are you for real? -.-

Unjust.

haha year 12 macrobs only have to wear uniform for the first term! so lucky

So, so unfair.

I recently bought a pair of pants, 2 jumpers and a nice cardigan for $26. You could get like, two pairs of school socks for that.

I assumed 1 of each; sorry, I don't give you enough credit.

Mmm at Mac.Rob, you don't need to wear school uniform after 1st term of year 12, unless you're a student leader presenting at assembly or something. Most people stop caring about what they wear after about three weeks - there's the odd handful who make an effort to dress really well, but most people just wear the school hoodie and jeans. There's no hierarchy or anything based on fashion.

Gonna be a bit unpopular here and say that uniform does serve a specific function in encouraging presentation and discipline - whether or not this is a good thing is another question, but at least within the context of contemporary society, the two skills are integral to success.

I agree with EZ, to be honest with you, I am far more discipline in my school uniform and I often leave it on well after coming home whilst doing my homework.

Savers, student discount day. Also, I think both discipline and presentation are highly overrated.

Totally. Discipline can also be a very bad thing, of course. Disciplined people tend to make life easier for others, especially those in authority, however challenging authority can also be very important. Also, I tend to think that people who worry overly about presentation have nothing less trivial to think about. That's not necessarily true, but I think my best work is done in pajamas, when I haven't had the time or inclination to even think about what I'm wearing.

I will come back and read the actual article later but from a purely practical, applicable view point, it really does save you the hassle of having to keep buying a shit load of clothes and keep constantly replacing them/buying new ones; that might be fine in the richer schools but in some of the less well off areas that might be a bit harder.

As for discipline i dont know about that...

I went to a catholic school who put on a really try-hard act to present themselves as looking as a private school. We had the whole blazers and tie thing (i hear public schools are doing that too now so i guess its less special...) but people would always find a way to screw with it. The chicks would roll up their skirt to make it shorter or the guys would tie their tie low (they even brought in those pre-tied ties for that reason). So, i don't really know about the discipline aspect, the people who would wear it properly would do so either way and the people who don't will probably keep doing that. Granted i didn't go to some elite school and like any regular school we had our share of idiots.

Our school had the fancy uniform, the government poured quiet a few several million into building one of those "Trade Training Centres" they promised at some election or another and they try to keep the place looking decent but to be honest its just a thin coat of varnish over the truth, our school did maybe slightly better than the public school around the corner and a couple teachers still couldn't put up with all the shit that went on and just bailed.

So, i guess the whole uniform thing does make the school look better but its just a mask really...

About Philosophy

When I see a youth thus engaged,—the study appears to me to be in character, and becoming a man of liberal education, and him who neglects philosophy I regard as an inferior man, who will never aspire to anything great or noble. But if I see him continuing the study in later life, and not leaving off, I should like to beat him - Callicle

uniform is a communist thing, it limits everyone to be "equal", its suppose to not show the rich kids from the poor ones, I dont really like it (my opinion) :)
