Is there such a thing as a hierachy in fashion? Because it seems a bit shallow trying to outdress someone learning at an education facility, rather then focusing on the coursework. Sorry, if I offend anyone, just my opinion. I feel better knowing I am in a somewhat comfortable uniform (at times), then in a tight shirt with a tie, that suggests a new form of torture from a teacher is to slowly suffocate to death?
‎"We divert our attention from disease and death as much as we can; and the slaughter-houses and indecencies without end on which our life is founded are huddled out of sight and never mentioned, so that the world we recognize officially in literature and in society is a poetic fiction far handsomer and cleaner and better than the world that really is."
- William James.

Why are you guys running in school shoes O_O ?

It's a pretty severe restriction on liberty if we're expected to not run all day just because we're going to school. There are many reasons why people would want to run (catching a bus etc.), and we shouldn't feel like we have to walk all the time just so that we can look like everybody else and be "equal".

Pants for my public school are like $30 or something, which I thought was bad.

The problem with having no uniforms is that wankers who wear ridiculously expensive clothes will be able to exert their giant fagboy egos on everyone else, even though everyone else knows damn well that generic shorts, white sneakers and rip curl hoodies are the bomb.

Ooh, that school uniform is pretty.

For those opposed to school uniforms: would it make a difference if the uniform actually looked somewhat decent and/or was comfortable?

On another note, I've been reading ethnographies about factory workers from different parts of the world, and even though they are highly regimented with uniform, the ethnographies also point out that participation in institutions also mess with your sense of time. In the case of school, you wake up in order to get to school and you're there for 6-7 hours, you then come home. The day isn't structured around what needs to get done, the passing of the seasons, whether it's light or dark outside, or through religion (unless I suppose you're in an Islamic school), but rather there are distinct boundaries between home time/ leisure time and learning/work time. So even if you aren't regimented by a uniform, you are certainly still regimented in other ways, including in your experience of time (I think there are alternative schools which are excpetions to this though).

Just that you would pray during the day, so to some extent your time would be organised around religion. (there isn't anything wrong with that).

how is uni over ^?

I like school uniform, aside from the common reasons I think it gives a feeling of "discipline". Not that it means that students without uniform don't have discipline..but in general, it makes both you and the school look good.
Ancient Persian Proverb; " I Wept because i had no Shoes, until i saw a man with no feet!"

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me.
