I stopped going to lectures when he went onto chaotic dynamics instead of fractals, found it way too boring. We were supposed to use computers and everything! Srsly, as if you should need computers in maths. Just shows that it wasn't pure enough.

I was really surprised that was my best mark, seeing as I completely fucked up the final exam (hadn't studied at all or gone to class, so wasn't particularly ready). And I was expecting mid-70s for the poetry of the universe (first year maths/philosophy course, quite cosmological). It was all essay-based, whereas I prefer assignments and proper maths...

On the other hand, I was hoping for a 95 for Analysis :( Guess you win some, you lose some.

Costa I found a useful link for your brother:

http://www.sci.monash.edu.au/policies/resnp.html

I think this translates to it counts as a pass but you can only stuff up twice, and both within first year

Actually quite interesting to see how the western view of the world and nature developed over time.
But I didn't really attend lectures nor tutes, it's a good subject for an easy pass with the assessment as 2 in class tests and an essay.

It's easier than everyone holds it out to be...:P

But it is still hard work, and by far the hardest subject I've done. That said, it's been the most useful. I'm stabbing myself for making a few critical mistakes here and there that cost me that distinction (and therefore blemish on my transcript), though.

Also, I'm available on ext. 58868 =)

ahh wat was the essay topic
There were like 10 to choose from;

Quote from: essay topics
1. Did the rise of natural philosophy in ancient Greece in the 6th and 5th centuries B.C.E. signify a radical departure from mythical thought?

2. Compare and contrast the different versions of the four-element theory developed in antiquity by Plato and Aristotle.

3. How did Islamic and Christian thinkers in the Middle Ages attempt to reconcile Aristotle's doctrine of the eternity of the world with the idea that God created the universe? In your answer focus on two different attempts to resolve this tension in medieval thought.

4. How did Agrippa's understanding of the structure and operation of the universe reflect the interest in natural magic during the Renaissance? In your answer pay particular attention to connection between the terrestrial and celestial realms.

5. What were the philosophical, religious and scientific influences on Bruno in formulating his new vision of the universe in the late sixteenth century?

6. How did the mechanical philosophy of the seventeenth century constitute a major departure from the Aristotelian metaphysics which had underpinned medieval scholasticism?

7. How did Newton and his followers respond to the criticisms by the Cartesians of his account of gravity?

8. In what ways did the Newtonians in the first half of the eighteenth century see Newton 's physics and system of the world as demonstrating the presence and activity of God in the physical universe?

9. A number of thinkers in the first half of the nineteenth century shared an underlying belief in the unity and convertibility of natural forces. Discuss the role this idea played in two significant experimental discoveries during this period.

10. How did Einstein's general theory of relativity fundamentally transform cosmology (the study of the universe as a whole) in the twentieth century?

I did number 10.

Awesome results Dan, you'd be pretty happy

MED1011 is PGO (pass-grade-only), and thats what i've got

The faculty only assigns 20% of the year one grade for semester 1, so they give the uni a mark out of 20.

Somehow i scraped a 16, which i suppose gives me a HD :P
