advice on subject selection

Hello everyone,
my first post here, the site looks like its full of great info.
I'm currently doing year 11
my subjects are
English
General maths
Accounting
Economics
Business management
VCE VET automotive
I could not do a 3,4 this year even though I did a 1,2 of business managemtn in year 10 due to no room in the class at my school.
So my school only offers a 5 subjects course for year 12
Therefore I have to drop a subject for next year
English, neccesary. Further i find extremely easy. and VCE VeT auto is classed as a subject and all i have to do is spend 4 hours there on a wednesday.
Ideally, I would like to do all 6 subjects but have been told its a no go by the co-ordinator.
So out of Accounting, Economics, and business management i have to drop one.
If anyone can give me advice it would be greatly appreciated.
p.s i am aiming for a 90+ enter
thanks,
Nathan

What do you want to do in uni?

What are you most interested in?

The only one I have experience with is business management, and I can tell you that's a good one for easy marks. Just straight memorisation mostly (sorry to those here who like this subject lol) will probably get you 40+

I agree with ninwa, business management is rote repetition (never done it, but my friend did, she got 42 :P). Legal also tends to follow this format, but I can see that you are not interested in that. :)

If you want an extra increment, work really hard this year, and apply for an extension study next year at Melbourne or Monash. I never did, and I regret this decision gravely.

If all else fails, I guess you can do the 6 subjects in year 12, but your co-ordinator is right, that does seem a little bit too extreme for year 12. I can't even cope with 5 subjects this year :)

Good luck with all of your decisions, and hopefully you can achieve that 90+ which you desire. ;)

I want to do the construction managment/ project management course at RMIT

Im interested in subjects that will get me a high score. and I hate english (vce english atleast)

What is rote repitition? some kind of way to learn the course?
I originally wanted to do Legal studies but they basically put me in what suited the school not me :/
Whats an extension study? what kind of subjects do they offer
I tryed to find out about doing further maths out of school, as no one does any work in class and its fairly simple (especially if i get a tutor for yr12) and the school said they dont want me to do outside subjects.

Thanks for the replies

Rote repetition is basically memorising key facts and concepts, and storing them in your memory for extended periods of time. If you done Psychology, you would understand ;)

Extension studies are basically studies which you can do in conjunction with your studies. I think Melbourne University offers the widest range of extension studies, and Monash also has a fair few.

[If you want more information on extension studies, check out http://www.services.unimelb.edu.au/umep/futurestudents and http://www.monash.edu.au/study/enhancement, or is you just want basic information on it, go to http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/VCE/studies/studiesextension.html

Hope this helps ;)

If it's high scores you want, don't drop business management.
http://vcenotes.com/forum/index.php/topic,4728.0.html <-------- example of how easy it was for me to get a high study score

I've never done eco or accounting so I can't help you with that unfortunately! However I agree with xox.happy1.xox, definitely look into extension subjects

I had a look on that melbourne site for the extension studies, seems that basically the go with it is you go well in a 3,4 in year 11 and in year 12 you do an extension. seeing as that I'm doing only 3/4s in yr12 I cant do it?? true?

you can do an enhancement with concurrent study of the preparatory subject
eg im doing both year 12 and uni accounting this year

i suppose it really depends on your interest... i reckon economics is a harder and 'more academically challenging' subject (gotta put more effort into it) than business management coz that's what my careers advisor told me...

haha im too biased towards acct that i shan't say anything bout that =P

yeah i waas thinking to drop business for economics, just due to economics is so interesting everything about it is interesting.Where as business is all simple and straightfowards.
The only reason I (aswell as 9/10 of my class) are dropping it is due to the teacher being an absolute dope, cant control a class, cant teach anything. I am doing all my learning out of the book.
With the enchancement study you are doing, do you get a study score like a vce subject? or is it just a bonus like a 6th subject? do you enjoy it? is it the same sort of thing as you learn in normal accounting? are most people in it, because they want to do accounting at uni? or just as a vce bonus?  It says you need the principals recommendation, what if in the past i haven't been doing well?
thanks heaps for all the replies muchly appreciated

enhancement studies will be credited to your vce ENTER like a 5th/6th subject. im pretty sure the specific info would be on the website. if in the past you haven't been doing well your school is unlikely to recommend you and even if they do the university you applied to might not accept you as an enhancement student so before you even start considering it maybe you should talk to your coordinator or something to find out whether they will recommend you. what kind of grades have you been getting on all your subjects?

and no, it differs to normal acct... it's much harder than vce acct alrite. and yes, all the people i know doing it are planning to major in accounting or at least do a commerce course.

So out of Accounting, Economics, and business management i have to drop one.

Considering your the one that chose these subjects I'm assuming you enjoy them. If you enjoy 2 more than the other pick them two. Your more likely to do well on subjects you enjoy because you'd actually want to study for them and spend more time on them.

However, if you enjoy them equally, pick the two your best at.

failed year 10
semester 1 economics i got an A+ and B+ so averaged as an A
my eco teacher is an absolute moron but he loves me simply because im the only person who hands in any work and could easily get him to recomend.
Although the co-ordinators and vice principals dont want to know me.

Fuck, I agree wholeheartedly! Do economics!

yeah i love eco but we need a new teacher hard. And everyone that has done business management is telling me thats the way to a high score

Problem with this is that i enjoy business least, but everyone who I tell that I am going to drop business thinks im an idiot. And that business is basically the best subject to do simply due to how easy it is (therefore getting a high score which is my main aim)

Economics is a much more complex subject than Business Management. I find it alright but I am really into it. If your heart isn't in it then you'll be regretting your choice to do it for the entire year 12. Especially without a good teacher you will be absolutely fucked. That's why most of the high achieving students in Eco are from the best government schools or rich inner city private schools.

Especially if you are from a 'not so good school', I'd say stick with Business if you want a good score. You could still do well in Eco but its going to be harder.
But also consider what you will enjoy more and what you want to actually learn. If your number 1 priority is to learn stuff that interests you then do that.

I'm trying out VCE Economics tutoring tomorrow, and already do it on a minor scale with one of my Methods students who also does economics.

The course certainly has a different emphasis than university economics, but it's still an extremely interesting, revealing and useful subject.
