How hard is it to maintain a D average in Law at ANU?
Very difficult. But not impossible. But you'll be doing a LOT of work in order to do so.

In order to put it in perspective, the only student to get a university medal in law this year (and hence the top law student graduating this year) didn't even get an HD average (I think he averaged 78-79 or so).

Why would you need to average a D, anyway? Even people on full scholarships at ANU only need to keep up a 65 average or something if they're doing law.

Oh really? I'll be on the NMS rather than the big one if I go (which is likely) and it said in the info:
'their academic achievement is expected to be at the appropriate level which means a Distinction average in each Semester...' (? maybe I'm reading it wrong)

That's for every other degree other than law :P They have a very informal briefing in O-week with all the scholarship winners telling them what averages they need etc. And I remember them saying it was too much to ask for law students to get a D average.

"do you go uni in England or are you just visiting?"

visiting, but I've the option of extending my stay, although I'm not sure if and when I'd be able to get to uni and how much it costs [and the academic year starts in september.]
I heard someone say you had to be a resident here for at least 3 years before the one you started uni, to avoid paying international student fees, but that seems easy to lie about :P

No idea for the former, but I think they offered places pretty promptly. Can't remember the details of accepting etc but I was in NZ at the time so you definitely don't need to be there to accept.

I was talking to my SR the other day (SR = Senior Resident, a 3rd/4th yr on your floor who looks after you etc) and he was saying that he'd been talking to the Subdean of Bruce and that she's already chosen all the new residents. Apparently she was looking pretty heavily at extracurricular activities as well - Bruce really needs better sportsmen and sportswomen!

Oh so you didn't have to go to ANU to enrol either?

shoot lol. Hm, I'll still put it down as my first option and try to emphasize I love playing sport or something. :P Actually, do you guys have inter college cricket comps or something? That would be cool.
And I was having a look at Ursula...as far as the fees go it's pretty much the same. Any idea what they're like? I could've sworn you said somewhere here that all the nerds go there or something..lol. Might be wrong though..

also, in case i got into a self-catered college (only putting down B&G)...and given that i can't cook to save my life...are there places that are close, cheap and variable enough to eat out on a regular basis?

edit: i read one of your posts on BoS about student networks, does downloading stuff off them count towards your quota?

thankss

Ursula has a reputation for being full of creepy/nerdy/quiet people. I know people from there (some like it, some don't - this is probably more reflective of college life than ursula itself) who are nice and not freaks and so on. Ursula and Bruce, I think, get the most amount of HDs on average. The rooms are smaller than all of the other catered colleges too, but I don't know how important that is to you. I think it has a smaller amount of people than all the other colleges too, which could be why they're known as the quiet ones.

There's inter-college almost everything sport competitions.

You can be fed relatively inexpensively. On campus in the student union place there's a reasonably priced baked-goods shop. It's always much cheaper to cook for yourself, though, when you can get dried pasta for 99c.

Downloads do count as quota unless you download on the wireless internet. However, I think wireless is monitored, so if you download giant files at a time, you'll probably lose access or something. If you download from an ANU webpage though, it's free.

thanks eriny :)

although i think you misinterpreted the last ques - i was referring to something that's called 'direct connect' over there, i think? ...where ppl on campus apparently upload tv shows, movies etc for others to download. im hoping downloading from there doesn't count :P

also, according to a dude on BoS (neo_o) the selection of new residents for bruce is a rumour so yay, lulz

Oh right... I think it counts, I don't see why it wouldn't. I think it also counts if people upload stuff from you. The 'network' thing is shut down every so often before a new one turns up, also.

Yeah, we do. Bruce's team isn't too bad (we have two Indian guys who've played international cricket for Thailand - though that's not really that big a deal). But the team is mostly passengers, lolz. I played last year (batted around 5th drop, didn't bowl... pretty useless really :P). It's all good fun though.
And I was having a look at Ursula...as far as the fees go it's pretty much the same. Any idea what they're like? I could've sworn you said somewhere here that all the nerds go there or something..lol. Might be wrong though..
Yeah Ursies is the nerdy one. I do have a couple of friends there mind you (one of my friends is a sports rep at Ursies this year). He's a pretty social outgoing guy (school captain of Wesley and all that) and he says he's kinda in the minority in terms of being, well, "cool" - apparently it's a bunch of nerds who all of a sudden find themselves surrounded by like-minded nerdy people. But it's certainly not untolerable, and I'd rather live at Ursies than Johns any day of the week...
also, in case i got into a self-catered college (only putting down B&G)...and given that i can't cook to save my life...are there places that are close, cheap and variable enough to eat out on a regular basis?
Possibly, there's plenty of restaurants in Civic, which would be less than 20 mins walk. But I wouldn't recommend going to a self-catered college if you don't plan to cook much at all. For one, it'd be überexpensive.

Unfortunately DC++ got shut down last year. As eriny said, it gets started again every now and then but then gets shut down pretty promptly afterwards. It's all local college network stuff though so when it's working it's not coming out of your ANU net quota.

It isn't too late, applications are still open on ANU's website.

hey i'm going to do my research as well but is there much assistance from the government money wise for students changing cities to study?

Also; Do you prefer to travel by plane, car, or train on return.

I prefer plane. Traveling by myself with Tiger is actually cheaper than petrol costs with the car (if I have a passenger though, it becomes kind of cheaper). I haven't really investigated traveling by train. Many people from Sydney either drive or take the bus, though. In my opinion, busing it to Melbourne isn't worth it.

If you live out of home, you can get a higher rate of Youth Allowance payments, but that's still based on your parents' income. ANU has a bursary, I think, so do some colleges (I know Burgmann does).
