Ranking help pls!

I know it's more complicated than this but

For the scenario:

SACS: (In rank order for unit 3 and 4)

Student B - 1
Student A - 2 (Difference by TWO marks)
Student D - 3
Student C - 4
Student E - 5

For the exam (rank order):

Student A - A
Student B - B
Student D - B
Student C - B
Student E - B

In terms of the general "highest ranked student gets highest exam mark as their sac mark" Would student B get an A for their SAC mark, despite only being ahead by 2 little marks? And Student A get a B?

Oh and by the way the teacher is unlikely to 'even out marks' or anything.

STUDENT A
SAC Marks: B
Exam Marks: A

STUDENT B
SAC Marks: A
Exam Marks: B

STUDENT C
SAC Marks: B
Exam Marks: B

STUDENT D
SAC Marks: B
Exam Marks: B

STUDENT E
SAC Marks: B
Exam Marks: B

So yea, Student B would get an A for SAC Marks, even though it was close, student B was still ranked 1st so Student B's sac marks would be the highest exam mark. Yea, in cases like this the system is probably slightly unfair, but if you take everything into account, It works well I suppose?

i thought it was, the person who gets the 'highest exam mark gets the highest sac mark in the cohort as their sac mark'?

so given that student A was the highest ranked person in terms of exams, shouldn't he get his sacs scaled up to the highest one obtained in the cohort?

nope

SACs are moderated against exam scores, using SAC rankings.
exam rankings mean little.

So Mao, despite the 2 mark difference, individual A would still get a B? :\ (for sacs)

I'd assume so

but there are a couple things to keep in mind also
1. statistical moderation is approximate, not exact
2. calculation of study score is irrelevant of grade, but rather the raw score [which we don't really get to find out]

if the two students have similar abilities (as demonstrated by the close tie in SACs), I would also assume that they'd perform similarly in the exam. that is, it might be a low A and a high B and are really only a couple marks off each other. the impact is not great, though it is a kind of reward for student B for doing well consistently for the whole year.

ReVeL: SACs are important, but not important enough to stress over.

It accounts for at max 50% of your score [SATs are different]. I have heard people say "I'm not ranking high enough so I can't get a good score", which is absolutely bullshit. Even if you have epically stuffed up a SAC, so long as you do well in the exam, you can still get a reasonably good score. [just saying this out loud, not in reply to anyone's post in particular]

I heard that at VCAA there is an actual formula on how to calculate the study score, what i dont understand is why dont they tell us how they actually do it, i mean i dont think there is a way to cheat the system because at the end of day it relies on your exam marks heavily. LOLS yay 50 posts finally  ;D

it's not so much a formula, but moreso a process that includes a lot of data crunching of practically everything.
its not so much that releasing the process allow people to "cheat the system", but it's more that it'll be meaningless to everyone because of its complexity due to all sorts of variables such as statistical moderation, etc.

um but if you're ranked near the bottom, is there a point in trying for the exams. coz you'll get a bad SS even if u do ace the exams.right..?

so if your ranked first on exam you get rank1 sacs

hypothetically
what if your schools highest sac mark is a D? and you get A+ on exam
what would you get then?
wouldnt the D go up to a B or so?

If you are ranked first in the sacs, your sac mark will be moderated against the best exam result. So to answer your question, the D ---> A+ for sac result.
