I don't think you could talk about the smacky when you only see him for thirty seconds and in essence isn't really part of a narritive thread. Sorry if you were being sarcastic, touch hard to pick up on the internets..

i disagree i think you could be able to

lmao i wasnt being sarcastic, i didn't totally agree with the question
i had 3 paragraphs agreeing with it and last one disagreeing with it, stating how not all of the characters change and look at life differently
im amazed how so many people just simply agreed with it~~ T__T""

I thought both questions were ridiculously straightforward, and I'm sure most of you guys would have done similar ones in class. I was disappointed they weren't trickier. Did anyone else just regurgitate an old high scoring response?

lol yes pretty much - although i focused more on HOW and WHY watt uses certain elements to convery her messages

lol
why didn't anyone mention anything about how some characters do not see new ways in life?
like jim, the drugged-out boy in the bin and cathy....

and yeah.... the only bad thing I can think about mine is not rebutting the topic and talking about Cathy - the only 'main' character whom Watt doesn't demonstrate any real change or preceived new look on life...  ah well.. it's over now.. I did my best at the time

yeah.. I reckon that was a sly 'trick' that VCAA included within what appeared to be an 'easy' topic...  however I really hope it's not absolutely necessary to rebut the topic to get a good mark... like i said.. it's over! no good dwelling on what could have been just think everything was "maybe meant to be"   :O

so despite the fact that you see him only fleetingly, have no idea about his situation, views, values etc unlike the other characters, you could still assert that he never comes to see life in a new way?

anyway I hope you all do really well.. is it like at my school where your choice to write on a film gets looked down upon by the 'text' students?

lol minor characters are not put in the film simply because they need more actors in it. they convey and supplement the major characters and themes.

did the film ever, ever tell us he did see a new life when it finished? yes we dont know his values, background, beliefs, pretty much NOT ANYTHING, therefore we dont know whether he did see new ways in life or not, but my interpretation is that he does not see new ways in life, as the last scene we see of him is he falls back in the bin and continues to smoke.

the question also states "the characters", i am 100% sure he is ONE of the characters in the film, unless i had illusions when i've watched the film umpteenth times?

you could mention it somewhere in one of your paragraphs...but I don't think it's that crucial to the topic.. the most you could probablly say is that he was a 'device' used to allude Nick to realise all the negativity in the world... he forced Nick to realise that he needs to make the most of his life because quite clearly, it's too short to worry about all the bad.

WHY AM I STILL ANALYSING THE FILM AFTER THE EXAM!?

nah it's actually harder to write on a film because you have to refer to the mise-en-scene crap, like camera shots lighting music angles multi-narrative structure...like what they do in media

Oh wow I was going to do Julia and the train driver too, but I felt that in the end if I did I'd concentrate more on the techniques she used and it'd become more suitable for the first prompt instead.

yeah I understand what you mean.. but the big word for me was "convinces".. and I thought it would be best to write about HOW "the film-maker" uses elements/techniques in order to convey her message to the audience

Oh my, i was totally about to mention him but ran out of time and thought he would pull away from my idea.

It's way to easy to just agree completely rather than to disagree, all characters did somehow change due to their course of events (note we are not saying whether it is for the better or worse). Jim had an effect on Nick, realizing how he has taken his life for granted, but not like you would base an entire paragraph on the 3 seconds of film and his most awesome quote, "woah", whilst looking at the stars.

What did you write about?

If your essay was still good I don't think you will be penalised.. but I would've included something about how the end montage depicts the view that Nick and Meryl and to some extent Andy (smiling holding the baby) helps us understand the way in which the characters can inevitably move on and overcome fears and anxieties and pursue life with a new outlook... but DON'T PANIC if you didn't mention it :P

....if you missed it.. then that means you would've had some other good ideas. You can't change it now so just be happy with what you've done.
