What is the best university in Victoria to study Engineering? I am interested in studying mechanical engineering but i am still undecided in choosing which university to put as my first preference.

Engineering at Monash had something like a 30% increase in first preferences this year. Monash is pretty good from what I heard. My brother has applied there for Enginerring.

I do Chemical Engineering at Melbourne and it is good. I know someone doing mechanical engineering, and he is disenchanted by the amount of electrical engineering subjects he needs to take. I think that will be the same at Monash though.

it's rather retarded how it is the case. monash engi is on par, if not better than melbourne, but i don't see why theres that huge a jump in first preferences @ monash. if anything, melbourne should have increased as they're increasing the number of pathways for engineering.

on the careers night there was a booklet from engineer's Australia that had Monash voted as the number 1 uni in Australia for engineering.

I've heard RMIT is quite good for Engineering. They are probably better at Engineering than they are at anything else, but that doesn't mean they're the best at Engineering, sadly :P

To engineers actually do anything? lol
My brother has tried to explain it me 100 times but I can just see engineers sitting there playing with rubix cubes :P

"An engineer is someone who is trained or professionally engaged in a branch of engineering. Engineers use technology, mathematics, and scientific knowledge to solve practical problems." -- Wikipedia

Engineers apply science to life. While scientists are doing the researching, engineers use scientific knowledge to produce sound bridges and buildings, develop useful materials (plastics) on a mass scale, etcetera. The possibilities are endless ;)

Yeh but I just don't see how many unsolved problems there can be. loll
I'm so ignorant.
I like to think as life all worked out by itself ::)

What do you mean? Engineers work with finite resources. It's not like science where if one guy discovers the theory behind plastics, everyone can know about it. With engineers, you form a team of experts who will plan a construction of an industrial scale plastics plant, for example. The knowledge about plastics is infinite, but the engineers are the guys that work in industry to make sure chemical plants, or construction fields are going to work under sound scientific principles.

edit
So what I'm saying is: engineers rarely work with unsolved problems, scientists can work on them. Engineers use the solutions to solved problems to apply them to day-to-day situations.

yeah, monash is voted 1 on those same uni survey things they do, where they also rank universities overall, but i guess its rather subjective. ppl say melbourne is too theory focused compared to monash, but i'm not sure. but at least 25+% of melbourne course is practical. dont know how much that is compared monashs though
