I'm pretty sure both Optus and Vodafone are are going to release them on prepaid.

I heard from a friend at optus that they are going to initially come out as contract only in a bid to lure younger customers into joining on for a contract. This could just be a rumour though.

Ok, ok, lets get this straight lol.

Until July 11th we won't know anything for sure. But Apple is no longer in a revenue sharing scheme, so it's basically upto the telcos. As the iPhone is a highly advanced smartphone, it won't come cheap. The Telcos need to make sufficient revenue from this product, which they get from a 24-month locked in contract with a $0 iPhone or a prepaid iPhone for $700+

Well, I don't really know yet. But who knows they might? It could still be $210 prepaid, or a cap :) (most likely a $60 cap or something)

No details of Australian contract prices are out yet, but Optus and Vodafone both say they'll have the iPhone on affordable plans and available pre-paid or on contract.

I'm afraid to tell you, but it's a must.

To take this to perspective, look at the Nokia N-series mobiles that cost roughly around $A1300~. The iPhone is another advanced phone boasting many new features, do you really think you're gonna get it for $200? When Apple sells it to Australian telcos, they don't sell it for $200, rather 1.5x that or double due to the rights and privileges as well.

The telcos somehow need to make a profit, so they offer it for $200 with a one to two year contract which they can make a decent profit (seems fair, $50 a month to $100 month 24 = $1,200 to $2,400).

But never fear, outright phones are here. Buying it outright is MUCH cheaper. It may cost $500 (for the 8GB) to $1000 (for the 16GB) but it's worth it, your making upto a $1900 saving! wow.

It's certainly on par, 16GB with a 600MHz processor for a PHONE for $1000 is a damn good price.

Anyone heard of the HTC Touch Diamond, just released in Australia?

Uses Windows Live Mobile 6.1, has all the features of the iPhone and a bit more, though only 4GB storage, but a 3MP camera.

And if you wanted a keyboard, there's also the HTC Touch Pro - which is basically the Diamond with a QWERTY keypad.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 is another one to look out for. Should be the iPhone killer when it's out.

Who's going to use Exchange Server anyway? Does it use ActiveSync (or something with similar functionailty)? If not, GTFO. That's what most consumers would be using to sync data.

The phone doesn't pack as much of a punch as you think. WM6 is also a derivative of a world class OS. Besides, functionality is inversely proportinate to battery life. I eagerly await the cries of 'omg, this phone lasts only a day before it dies' of the 3G iPhone due to inefficiency of the protocol. If not, I will be right behind you in purchasing one (perhaps when the price goes down).

The HTCs are technically similar to the iPhone (with the iPhone coming out on top slightly for raw processing capacity). Mind you, I like the intuitiveness of the iPhone's interface. I have also tried a HTC running WM6, which is also quite good. Each to their own I guess.

AppleXY - your fanboy-ism shows.

I might add that the current price in the US is USD$399 for the 8GB iPhone. I'm sure that the price in Australia won't be too far off this mark ($600 perhaps?)

Yeah, it supports ActiveSync and also Cisco networking technologies. The major Fortune 500 companies have tested the iPhone and have requested these features.

Don't large corporations use Microsoft exchange? (I'm going to work for one... so :D)

:D before I wasn't, but I am now :D :P (I'm just so used to my mac, it's always been pleasant to use (amid the the VRAM issue) and i'm not biasing, it's the brutal truth, I swear on University of Melbourne)

Support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and industry-standard corporate security standards allows IT professionals to seamlessly integrate iPhone into their corporate environments.

Features include:

Push email
Push contacts
Push calendar
Global Address List (GAL) support
Certificates and identities
WPA2/802.1X
Enforced security policies

More VPN protocols
Device configuration
Remote wipe
