I wish I had 8GB. (I just planned by dream machine - haven't/can't buy anything yet).
The most RAM I have in a single computer in this household is 1 :(

No point having anything more than 4GB.

A 32-bit OS / machine can only address bytes of memory which = 4GB. Windows takes a bit more for I/O addressing space and VRAM.

Unless you're planning on using a 64-bit OS that is, in which case you can address up to, theoretically, bytes of memory = 16 exabytes (for the curious, this is about 17.2 billion GB).

My rig was pretty awesome back when I got it in 2004, but now its just an average PC.

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 530 3.0 ghz 800 fsb
MOBO: Gigabyte P35-S3 (bought this in 2007 when my old mobo died)
HDD: 1x WD Caviar 120gb sata hdd, 1x WD caviar 250gb sata hdd
GPU: Gigabyte 8600GTS (bought this with the mobo since my X800 pro was an AGP card)
RAM: 1gb DDR2 800mhz ram (i think its just generic haha)
Case: Coolermaster Centurion
Keyboard: Logitech G15
Mouse: Logitech G5

No point having anything more than 4GB.

A 32-bit OS / machine can only address bytes of memory which = 4GB. Windows takes a bit more for I/O addressing space and VRAM.

Unless you're planning on using a 64-bit OS that is, in which case you can address up to, theoretically, bytes of memory = 16 exabytes (for the curious, this is about 17.2 billion GB).

Wait does that mean a 32 bit can only go upto 4gb while a 64 bit can go upto 17.2billion GB?

In theory, yes (of addressable memory).

In practice, it's usually somewhat less due to other factors.
