What sedatives did he prescribe you? Did he investigate any possible physical causes?

He just prescribed me some melatonin

Eh, Melatonin is not available as a commercial product in Australia... and is rarely be used in cases of insomnia anyway...

He just prescribed me some melatonin, and told me to take it easy and that it should work. But I don't really know? Aren't these bad if they are used continuously? I'm scared. :(

He basically said that some causes were stress throughout the year, and also emotional problems. I'm also dehydrated, as the heater is constantly on in the house, even during bed time, and I find it much more difficult to sleep in the hot as I do in the cold. Then I have neck swelling (although I don't think it is really related).

He was not too helpful at all! >:(

Wow... So what would you recommend Jessie? :P (I don't trust doctors anymore. :()

I suffer the same problems with you Happy, I can never ever sleep and some nights I stay awake all night for all my life. Well for me, this is because i think too much of what's ahead of me. I'm always thinking and it just never stops. What I normally do is get a telescope and observe the stars all night. But since this has only been happening after your legal exam, your irregular sleep patterns can also be related to depression. Even though the exams are over and you don't feel stressed at all, short-term insomnia could be typically caused by such things as stressful episodes(maybe being really anxious for the year 12 exams) and the stress which has been built during the exam time can have a significant affect on you now. But right now, I think the best medicine is your inner-self. Whether it is your performance in your exams or something to do with your personal life, you need to let go of these things and free your mind or otherwise the issue you have will become permanant.

Hahaha. That's a peculiar way of inducing sleep.

(PS. Was your telescope expensive? I've considered getting one for these holidays to kill time. Oh and it's a better hobby than sitting in front of my Xbox till 3am)

I don't know, I'm not a doctor. However, Melatonin is not readily available in Australia, and is almost never used for a simple case of insomnia. The first line of treatment would be a sedative like stilnox, to be taken for a couple of weeks. I also hope that they'd devise a treatment plan or refer you to a psychologist, or thoroughly investigate the aetiology of your symptoms.

What dose did he put you on?

I got it from ebay. It was like 150 bucks.

Right now, it is only a capsule a night, a couple of hours before sleep, but it may have to be more if my symptoms persist. Maybe he misdiagnosed my disorder, and gave me something to treat something else? Well, I guess I will see how it goes... :(

I'm seriously thinking about going to a psychologist, though. I need to sort out my problems before everything explodes (emotionally :P).

hmmm if things get really bad like you start having panic attacks which is like the extreme end of all this tension and stress then you should c the doctor again and explain stuff, but doctors never really take things seriously , but you could go to a psychologist which they help you like on techniques and you can explain to them and they talk back about why did this happen bla bla ... but yeah that neck stiffness if that happens alll the time then thats bad cause it means your nerves are like all stuffed up and always 'on' so to speak... get someone to massage it out and seriosuly breathe.. lol

One capsule a night? He wrote one capsule on the prescription? I mean, what exact dose did he give you?

Where did he tell you to get the melatonin from?

He'd be a terrible doctor if he prescribed you the wrong medication, or misunderstood what your symptoms were... but in Australia, in general, Melatonin is not prescribed AT ALL very often.

That's literally what he said, and wrote on the prescription... One capsule every night. He was one of those Indian doctors (not intended to offend) and spoke little English, so I didn't even really know what he was talking about. He actually had the melatonin in his pharmacy (strangely enough), and prescribed it to me, thinking it would work...

I don't think I should use it now after what you have said, Jessie. Maybe I should go for a second opinion somewhere else? :(

He owns a pharmacy? :S
What's the name of his pharmacy?

What's the GP's name, my dad is a doctor (GP) and he is wondering what the person's name is?

PM me the answer if you don't want to write it publicly.

I don't remember his name to be honest. :( Maybe I should just go back tomorrow and talk to a different doctor to see if they prescribe something properly? :S
