Why is Commerce too vague? My course goes like this (as well as Commerce @ Monash).
6 introductury subjects:
- Accounting
- Management
- Commercial Law
- Marketing
- Business Statistics
- Microeconomics
By the end of the first year you should know what area of Commerce interests you. The beauty of Commerce is that it allows you to have a taste of all these differnt areas of business without having to commit to a major.
I think personally if you could do Law/Com, you'd have the perfect degree for you.
That's just my opinion.
My brother started out doing BSc and is now doing BBus majoring in Econometrics and Accounting because he hated science.
His VCE consisted of Methods, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Further Maths but now he sees that FOR HIM, BBus was the way to go.
when i mean vague i mean that i don't know what career paths it leads to and whether the economic crisis has affected the amount of work left for people with this degree.
yer i was thinking of comm/law but on the ANU site it goes it's a full on subject which scares me a little cause i'm planning to go to every major party event and go out every w/end. + loose my liver.
1. If you don't know what career paths it can lead to; ask! lol It seems obvious. Speak to us, speak to friends, speak to people in the industry, speak to to careers counsellor, Go on mycareer, seek etc and look at the jobs being advertised and look at what the 'roles' of that job are.
2. Don't even worry about the economic crisis, market cycles are embedded in the economy. There are ups and there are downs. All areas of labour are affected but there are still jobs out there in areas of business. Probably the hardest area to get into would be marketing/advertising because supply of graduates> demand for them.
Accounting: there is a shortage of qualified accountants
Business Stats/Econometrics: would be high paying from what i know
HR management: High paying and will always be fundamental part of a business
Economics: probably after a recession you would see a higer need for people with economics education because organisations feel that they can safeguard themselves or something.
Oh and also, by the time you graduate in 2012 the economy will most likely be booming so don't worry about the economy in your choice of career
3. ANU is far away. You need to consider whether the benefits outweigh the costs of moving to ANU. Moving to ANU would be hard to balance work (which youd need to support yourself), studies and social life due to the fact that youd almost definetly HAVE to work quite a substantial amount (Unless ur a rich kunt) wheras in Melbourne you can do minimal work (or none), do your studies and party hard and have your parents support you.
Com/Law at Monash is probably the best choice in Victoria for anyone who has interests in Law and commerce.
I could have done Law/Commerce @ Deakin but no thanks
