im sooooooooooo lost

okay at the start of the year i was certain that engineering is the right course for me. One month into the year i was beginning to loose interest in this engineering thing cause chemical eng is the only engineering field i like but ironically i hate chemistry. Then i wanted to do commerce but that's too vague for me. So i thought hrmm law? but were? ANU? but again i looked at depression rated and bam the dirt is gone. So now im losttttttttttttttttttt. I want a course that interest me but has great job opportunities and good money. Like i don't wanna do arts and enjoy my uni years but then suffer after wards or even with science. Then again i don't want to suffer with chemistry during my uni years but be rewarded at the end, after all 17-23ish are your best years, so i've heard. And this has led to my predicament thus far, Can someone give some advice? what course????

Why is Commerce too vague? My course goes like this (as well as Commerce @ Monash).
6 introductury subjects:
- Accounting
- Management
- Commercial Law
- Marketing
- Business Statistics
- Microeconomics

By the end of the first year you should know what area of Commerce interests you. The beauty of Commerce is that it allows you to have a taste of all these differnt areas of business without having to commit to a major.

I think personally if you could do Law/Com, you'd have the perfect degree for you.

That's just my opinion.

My brother started out doing BSc and is now doing BBus majoring in Econometrics and Accounting because he hated science.

His VCE consisted of Methods, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Further Maths but now he sees that FOR HIM, BBus was the way to go.

Melbourne Model Sucks :P

I'm gonna start always using this as an example of why Melb Model fails. X_X (this isn't just spitefulness because if I wanted to (pending on passing UniLearn maths) I could enter Melb Uni Commerce mid-year, but now I see Melb Uni is just glorified crap :) )

Melb Model Commerce student 3 year degree: Max commerce related subjects allowed to study (thus making it harder to double major): 18 commerce subjects

Monash University Commerce student 3 year degree: Max commerce related subjects allowed to study: 24 commerce subjects

Monash University Double degree BBus(Acc)/BBus(Mgt) student (note that Melbourne model has ABBOLISHED double degree so this option can't even be considered at Melbourne): 32 commerce related subjects.

Melb Uni = fail :)

when i mean vague i mean that i don't know what career paths it leads to and whether the economic crisis has affected the amount of work left for people with this degree.

yer i was thinking of comm/law but on the ANU site it goes it's a full on subject which scares me a little cause i'm planning to go to every major party event and go out every w/end. + loose my liver.

well i keep changing my from engineering to commerce to pharmaceutical science to business information systems...so i know what it's like.

my careers councilor told me science grads don't earn much, as she was one.

A lot of people don't know what they want to do even at the end of year 12, or after year 12 so I wouldn't stress out so much.  Just try to work out what really interests you and what you're good at and go from there.

1. If you don't know what career paths it can lead to; ask! lol It seems obvious. Speak to us, speak to friends, speak to people in the industry, speak to to careers counsellor, Go on mycareer, seek etc and look at the jobs being advertised and look at what the 'roles' of that job are.

2. Don't even worry about the economic crisis, market cycles are embedded in the economy. There are ups and there are downs. All areas of labour are affected but there are still jobs out there in areas of business. Probably the hardest area to get into would be marketing/advertising because supply of graduates> demand for them.
Accounting: there is a shortage of qualified accountants
Business Stats/Econometrics: would be high paying from what i know
HR management: High paying and will always be fundamental part of a business
Economics: probably after a recession you would see a higer need for people with economics education because organisations feel that they can safeguard themselves or something.
Oh and also, by the time you graduate in 2012 the economy will most likely be booming so don't worry about the economy in your choice of career

3. ANU is far away. You need to consider whether the benefits outweigh the costs of moving to ANU. Moving to ANU would be hard to balance work (which youd need to support yourself), studies and social life due to the fact that youd almost definetly HAVE to work quite a substantial amount (Unless ur a rich kunt) wheras in Melbourne you can do minimal work (or none), do your studies and party hard and have your parents support you.
Com/Law at Monash is probably the best choice in Victoria for anyone who has interests in Law and commerce.

I could have done Law/Commerce @ Deakin but no thanks

Just because our model sucks, doesn't mean we suck. :(

No insult intended :( sorry lol

You know in hindsight you'd have rather gone Monash (if the location was better.)

I'd quite confidently say that if Monash Uni was also located in the heart of Melbourne, it would be the number 1 preference for most people now that Melb Model has been introduced.

I think thats why a lot of people from the other side of Melbourne still put Melb over Monash wheras we have the luxury of attending the best Uni in Vic at our doorstep :)
