Title: CLASS OF 2018!
Post by: lolface on August 31, 2014, 06:56:07 pm
Hi Everyone!

So recently I saw a post thing for the class of 2017 so I decided to make one for us year 8's! I know many of us are going to a selective school/waiting for another offer so now we have a place where we can help each other out!

 ;D

IMPORTANT: In order to ask a question, you will have to click here and make an ATAR Notes account.

I'm a bit nervous for subject selection next year. Have you started studying for the umat yet?

Yeah, I've started studying for the umat. Infact, I've already done 12 practice exams!!! How many have you done????

I've also finished the syllabus for Chemistry, Methods, Specialist Maths, Further Maths, Biology, AND physics.

I could honestly not agree with this more - when you're in year 12 you'll wish you appreciated junior secondary more! Just enjoy yourself!  :)

Oi, cut the crap out of this thread, please :P. If there are more Year 8s out there that want a specific community, they're free to have it here. (Though I would recommend passions additional to high-school education).

Hahah - not saying there's something wrong with it, just that when I was in year 8 I spent my spare time playing video games. :P If you guys want to learn more about academic things, power to ya'.

Kudos for learning more - but a lot of the study designs for those subjects will have well and truly changed by the time you get to VCE (the first four are set for change in 2016). If you really want to learn more about those specific subjects, seriously just learn more - don't focus on VCE curriculums, look to learning more about chem in general. Learn more about biological processes, not just because they're in VCE. Learn about the fiddly points of calculus - not because they're in the study designs, but because they're cool. (and so on and so forth)

When did you guys start getting so eager? Good for you, I guess but really, enjoy childhood whilst it lasts!  You have plenty of time for VCE yet, plus your work now will provide you with the slimest advantage possible. Don't burn yourself out now with the content, otherwise the next few years will be boring as all hell....
Title: Re: CLASS OF 2018!
Post by: lolface on September 06, 2014, 01:13:10 pm
Sorry for the misunderstanding everyone. This thread wasnt supposed to be about VCE (we have many years for that) It was just so that people of the same age group could communicate with each other without the older kids getting annoyed.  :) We're not being "eager" for VCE, many year 8s on atar notes recently did a selective entry exam and so many of us will be going to similar schools next year so i created this thread as a discussion about school. So please cut out the sarcasm, I'm pretty sure I never mentioned anything about VCE.  :)

I don't see a problem with year 8's having their own thread. If anything, I encourage it. The study habits you develop in year 8 will continue with you all the way to year 12 and beyond.

Hey, on the bright side, I'll probably look very silly in a few year's time when you're all smashing VCE. :D
Title: Re: CLASS OF 2018!
Post by: lolface on September 14, 2014, 04:47:28 pm
I completely agree! I don't graduate till 2016, and the only reason I have an account on ATAR notes is because I'm currently completing VCE subjects - but honestly, chill out guys! I strongly recommend you don't start selecting VCE subjects just yet. At least, don't start looking in depth at them until you're coming to the end of year 9. Even that is pretty early.

As I said before, this isnt a thread about VCE. Most year 8s are on this forum because of the selective entry exam. Never said anything about selecting VCE subjects, the people who were saying that before were being sarcastic, they arent even in year 8.

Lol. From what I've seen of the UMAT it's a lot about understanding people. You can't learn to understand people from a textbook, that comes from real life experience. Fact.

The majority of it is not about understanding people.
Section 2 is understanding people, but Sections 1 and 3 are logical reasoning and spatial reasoning.

If anyone's still paying attention to this thread at all, hi.  :-\
I'm a current Year 8 (Year 9 2015). I'm not going to a selective entry school, but I am doing Japanese 3/4 and Philosophy 1/2 next year, so I for one was glad this thread was made.
In all honesty the Year 12's replies were pretty funny. Keen I am. Scared, but keen. I'll show you all up when I only have one more 3/4 to study in Year 12  ::)

Nice to meet you any other ambitious/keen/crazy Year 8s.

Did any of you hear of the Year 8 this year who get 50 for Spesh? And I thought I was keen.

Hahaha you're all so awesome!!! 3/4 in YEAR 9!!! THAT's incredible!

The kid who got a 50 in specialist o.O couldn't do that even if I'd had Year 13 and 14 to study hahaha

I feel like VCE is so rigidly restricted to Yr 11 and 12.

Ideally, the BEST VCE program would be to have 2 3/4 subjects in Year 10 (probably bottom two - content revision ones like biology/PE/health and human development etc.) then a language and an 'easy' maths in Year 11 (like French and further maths) then an English and a harder maths/chemistry in Year 12 (like Literature, Chemistry and Specialist/Methods)

Why DON'T schools encourage kids to branch out like this! IMAGINE doing 2 subjects in Year 12 - you would just have SO MUCH TIME!!!

Thank you ;u; God knows how I'll go, but at least I can do it again.
Oh I knoooow... I was amazed. I'm not planning to do any math and even if I did there'd be no way I could do that well.

I find it weird that people call 1/2 subjects 'Year 11 subjects' and 3/4s 'Year 12 subjects'.

True true true. That sounds like a good plan actually. Having those in Year 12 would no doubt be easier with the amount of time you'd have compared to just doing the 'normal' way.

By the way, congratulations on an amazing ATAR!! And a perfect study score in English  :o

Calculus = naw. I'm not sure what the syllabus for next year will be for me since we're in streamed classes. This year it was linear equations/graphing (only straight, linear lines. No curves yet (is that calculus? idek)), measurement (perimeter, area, volume), fractions/decimals/percentages and probably more but I don't care remember.

Tutoring = naw. Maybe for kids that go to selective entry schools but I just go to a regional school and I don't know anyone that gets tutoring (unless they're under-achieving). I'm thinking about it though. If money allows, if I need it. First world problems.

I try to think that my university prospects will change from now, so I don't make up my mind too much. My plan of now is a Bachelor of Art (if I can Scholar's Program) at Monash with 2 majors of Japanese and Korean, followed by a double Masters of Translation and Interpreting (one year in Monash in AU with a masters recognised in Australia, one year in 神戸外大 (Kobe University of Foreign Studies) in JP with a masters recognised in Japan).
But we'll see  ;D

I remember back in Year 8 when all I cared about was getting 100% on every test.

Maybe your priorities were right. I'm not getting 100% on every test. I do extension English (to Year 10) and Humanities/Science/Math (not to year level) but I've never received complete straight 100%s in any of them.

Lord! 2023... what? Year 3?
Well, good luck to you in any case. If I had any advice as a senior (that's rare)... do all the extra-curricular stuff you can. Leadership programs, instruments, sports. I never did any of them to a skilled extent and I regret it now. I feel like I can't join any social clubs because they would all know more than I do. It's not like you can learn that kind of stuff from the books, either.

But other than that I really hope you do well in primary school and more so in secondary. Are you planning on going to a selective entry school?

This holiday? Just Japanese.
The future? I'll probably do 3/4 Philosophy in 2016 since I'm doing 1/2 next year. I'd like to do another 1/2 in 2015 but the school reckons my timetable is too tight and I'd miss too many classes.  :'(
For 2017, hopefully English Language and something else (I'm thinking history: rev or psychology (probably psych)). Then in 2018 whatever I didn't do in 2017 plus maybe chemistry (probably not - most likely I'll do Japanese through UMEP or something).
So I don't think we'd share many of the same subjects unless we both did Chem and Psych.  :(
Different career goals I guess. But hopefully that doesn't mean we can't help each other out still  :D haha

/butts in/ yeah, I found that the higher year level, the better school life. Additionally, congrats on you guys for spreading your VCE subjects across your high school academic years; instead of just doing them in year 11 and 12.
It helps with solidifying your study habits - because there's not as much urgency to do that with normal high school subjects and also you get to understand how the VCE works earlier on, making you more informed at an earlier age - something I wish I could've done.

I wish I did what you guys are doing!!

Agreed!  I was bored sick of school in year 9 in an utterly un-academic school, with teachers who thought it was our 'rest' year and spent the whole class chatting on other topics... everyone says it gets worse, but it only gets better.

And I wasn't allowed to do a 3/4 subject even in year 11... :'( you are definitely lucky, keep it up!

Good luck :D but remember to keep it broad - extracurricular and lots of normal 9/10 subjects too!  Because you may find that you're bored sick of VCE by year 12 and wish you'd got all you could out of lower high school life, not just academics.

Thanks. I was honestly surprised that the school let me do VCE in Year 8. Like, for one the school doesn't have very high academic standards; and it doesn't usually stretch the rules for kids like me. The thing I actually hope will come out of this (other than a high ATAR - fingers crossed) is more younger students doing VCE. There are complications surrounding organization, work load and maturity and everything, but if some junior high-school kid is really good at something, why not let them take it all the way? I really hope this mentality comes into effect in Victorian education. Like even now they're introducing not science 'extension', but 'acceleration' -- essentially doing Year 10 chemistry in Year 9 and 1/2 in Year 10 (what I'll be doing)... that's what I hope to see.

I feel you. Especially the 'rest' year. There's a whole lot of personal development related work and events set up for us to do, and honestly the actual schoolwork has only slightly increased in difficulty. Schools really need to push it where they can. I hope it gets better. Looking forward to it.

That sucks. But even so you did ridiculously well; congratulations.

That I also agree on. Maybe not the getting sick of VCE part, but with the extracurricular part. I don't do any sport or instrument or whatever, and I feel really disappointed that I didn't take the opportunity to start when I was younger. Good point  ;D

Hi all :)
How are you guys going with your 3/4 subjects select entry schools and life in general?
I'm liking year nine much much more then year eight; more choice over the subjects you do, seemingly harder work (yes, of course it should be; we're a year level higher - but it seems there's more scope available to put in extra effort now)
What texts are you guys reading for English?

I'm liking year nine much much more then year eight; more choice over the subjects you do, seemingly harder work (yes, of course it should be; we're a year level higher - but it seems there's more scope available to put in extra effort now)
What texts are you guys reading for English?

Yes, year nine seems to be much more enjoyable for me too. This semester for English we are reading Life as we knew it by Susan Beth Pfeffer, and next semester we are reading Shadow by Michael Morpurgo. What texts are you reading for English this year?

Anyone else want to do med in uni?

I'd love to become a psychiatrist in the future! It's my dream career. c:

Its definitely a huge jump from year 10. :'( I actually haven't had a day so far where I have had no homework hahah. I am happy with all my subjects especially physics!! The 3/4s I'm doing aren't bad, its just year 11 spesh that's killing me right now. Biology is super interesting (unlike last year) atm and i'm loving it buts its a lot of work :/ :-[

That's great about your subject choices. :) What are you studying?

Yeah, Year 10 practically into Year 12 (for those two subjects) can be an interesting transition, but absolutely worth it in the long-run. It's a fantastic experience in preparation for next year. Which 3/4s are you studying? :)

P.S. And in response to both of you, don't worry: ATAR Notes has your back. ;D

I totally forgot this thread existed. Thanks for reviving it!
And congrats on admin you deserve it!!

Year 11 is pretty great. Aside from the academics, I feel quite sad that it's the second last year of school. Everything seems so fleeting and i just want to have fun while I'm still here in my hometown with my childhood friends.
No 3/4s for me this year. The only ATAR-contributing subject I'm doing is UMEP.

Nice choices! :D Are they, like, conventional 3/4s to do in Year 11 at your school, or were you just interested in those subjects?

No problem! I thought it was about time this thread had some activity again, haha. And thanks very much! ;D

What do you mean by fleeting, exactly? Like, coming to an end very quickly?

And really cool! Do you think you've learnt a lot from doing 3/4s previously? (Am I reading correctly? Did you do a 3/4 in Year 9?) :)

A quick Google search tells me that VSL is the Victorain School of Languages, but I've not heard of it before. How does that work, exactly? Which language? :)

Yes, that's what I meant. Having a Google it looks like fleeting is used mostly like "a fleeting [something]" rather than using it like I did... whoops haha

Yeah I think I did :) mainly coping with stress, task management and some nice sentiments hahah
Yes, I did unit 2 in Year 8 so 3/4 followed shortly after :)

Victorain
;)

I used to learn Bengali and my sister learnt Hebrew at VSL - it's a government-run organisation that teaches various languages.  Generally they're language classes for students housed at different public schools, on Saturdays or Sundays.  Though I think VSL often offers VCE languages by distance. (?)

Generally parents who immigrated here and want their children to learn their cultural language will send them to VSL.

Year 11 is actually a huge step from last year, but it's quite manageable (so far). This year, I am doing 3/4 Software Development. For my other subjects, I love Spesh, Physics, Chem and Eng Lang so far, but right now, I don't find Methods to be particularly interesting right now (it's basically revising Year 10 work and a little bit extra added). Otherwise, I'm currently enjoying Year 11!  :)

Spesh could be classed as the "hardest" maths, but I chose to ignore that fact hahaha. :)
I found that there was a fair bit of trig when I did methods and spesh! :)

What are you doing for English and Methods currently?
What type of art are you into?
(Sorry for all the questions!!) ;D

Myself (being on semester break for uni)- I learnt how to play the ukulele today, and I've tried to pick up some knitting and crossstich recently. :)

English is mostly language analysis, but also some comparative writing between Paradise Road and some war poetry. Methods we are doing logarithms and indices which is thankfully very easy!  :P I mostly do pencil and pastel sketches of birds (see my profile).
Is the uke fun? I've never really learned any musical instrument except about a year or two of the piano, so I don't really know what it is like. I used to know how to crossstitch and knit myself, but I haven't done any for a while now ::)
Hope your uni break is good!

Ah, language analysis is good fun! :) How's the comparative writing coming along?
Logs are great fun! I still use logs for the (little) maths I have to do for uni, haha! :)

The uke is an odd instrument, it's strings are in an odd order, unlike the guitar (which I don't play), and the bass (which I do actually play). :)
I'm seriously struggling with the knitting atm- hopefully I'll figure it out before too much longer! ;D

Hope your break (and every other 2018er's school holidays) are great fun! K888 and I are here to support y'all <3

OK, welcome all members of the Class of 2018!
Here is where we bring this tired old topic back to life!
I'll start by introducing myself:
I'm studying Yr 11 in Melbourne doing all Unit 1,2 subjects: Methods, Specialist, Chemistry, Physics, Texts and Traditions, and English.
My hobbies are drawing and sport, particularly https://atarnotes.com/forum/index.php?topic=118667.1860 cricket. My favourite VCE subject is Chemistry, and I really love the feeling of camaraderie that hovers around AN!

Now that we've got the ball rolling, can everyone introduce themselves and we can get this thread back to life as a place where all the 'Class of 2018ers' can get together! ;D

Welcome aboard all...

I'm doing year 11 in Melbourne's west suburbs.
My subjects are mainly 1/2, being English, Methods, Physics, Accounting and Economics, and a 3/4, VCE VET Business Administration.
I am also doing a Cert IV in accounting through a TAFE sort of thing that is connected with the school, so that's cool.
I am also relatively interested in various things...
I love playing soccer, am relatively successful at Basketball, Cricket and AFL, and am trying, in my spare time, to learn German and a Programming language.
I am also attempting to build an electric motor for a go-kart thingymajiggy...
So yeah, hows 2017 treating everyone?

Is the Cert IV apart of your VET or will you get a separate Cert I/II/III for Business Admin?
Do you do placements and stuff for your Cert IV in Accounting?

I will have to complete several units post-grad to finish the Accounting.

I only have placement for the Business...

Is anyone applying for School Captain? I'm thinking about it but I have no leadership experience whatsoever and no credentials (basically i'm not entirely sure what i've done with my life.) At my school people of any age can apply to be school captain but it's normally grads who get it (we don't have year levels). This year they haven't asked us to provide details of previous leadership experience which is a good thing for me I guess. I know of one girl who will definitely get it (she does leadership everything), and one guy who probably will (We will have 6 captains).

I'm thinking my only chance is to say that until recently I haven't had the confidence to apply to be a leader (which is true) and then spin it like I will be the best person because I want to encourage other people like me to develop their confidence/get involved in leadership etc.

Any one have any ideas? Or is anyone else thinking about applying?

I recon thats the best way for someone in that position to attack the position.
Make them see that you can show others the way through your experience.

I think I did that a little too well... :D
I was one of seven applying for six positions...
and got kicked out... :(
Apparently, the fact that I had my school laptop taken off me for "IT related charges" about 7 times in the last year was instrumental in the decision.... :D
Ah well... Can't win 'em all... :D

P.S:
Did any1 else have THE BEST final day for the Yr 12's? ???

Originally I was going to go with the whole "yes!! You never know until you try! Take all opportunities presented to you! If you don't you might regret it spiel!11!" and then laughed at myself thinking, why didn't I say that to myself when our captains were being decided?
Then I realised that it was because I didn't want to!
Not only was I like you (but in my case actually disqualified because you needed a couple of years in a committee I never ended up going to), but I couldn't actually see myself in that position. I always thought it would have been great to hold a leadership position, organise our grad events and get a nice badge (haha) but eventually I realised I was putting it down to whether it would be a nice enough addition to my resume.
And honestly, that kind of motivation didn't deserve the position. I tend to see myself as above all a sincere person. I do things because of genuine passion, and in most cases steer clear of things I don't honestly want or like. It dawned on me that trying for school captain or our leadership positions wasn't sincere.
So, with the thought that I'd generally encourage anyone to give anything a go, ask yourself first: do I want this? Am I genuinely a better pick for this than any of my peers? Am I being true to myself?

No need to reply or justify - just food for thought :))

How many positions are up for grabs this year?
Your chances are a realisitcally slim, that being said like others have said it isn't a terrible idea to go for it. It is a Win-Win for you either outcome if you apply.
=> You get it : You can experience what leadership is like and whether you like to pursue in the future
=> You don't get it : You experience the process of going for a leadership position.
I think leadership is much more easily accessible then it has ever been. This is especially for introverted, less confident people with research showing that introverts can be better leaders then extroverts.  I would also not put yourself down so much for you "lack" of experience.

Leadership isn't based only on confidence and having great social skills. It also requires patience, listening, being in control of your emotions, etc. So I would also advertise some other skills you may have that the other current leaders don't like listening. There is always something you have that someone doesn't.
I know in my own experience when I applied to be student representative for my course, I did it because I was the person who would talk to everyone . I wouldn't stick to getting feedback from my own friends and that has paid dividends for me. In that I have improved my ability to talk to strangers, made some friends as well but also got told issues I wouldn't have thought of.

Don't see the current leaders as people who just got it. Some of us did, Most don't. I can almost guarantee that the girl you have written about who took all the leadership positions isn't the greatest at all the parts of it and made some mistakes along the way.

I'm so glad to see this thread finally active :DD I've been stalking it since like 2015 when I was trying out for JMSS hoping that it would start up!

How did everyone enjoy year 11? What 1/2s and 3/4s did you all do?

I did psych 3/4, just had my exam today, and I really enjoyed it! I skipped 1/2 but I think that was probably for the best because the 1/2 content didn't really inspire me at all

My 1/2 subjects this year are methods, english language, biology, chemistry and media. I'm dropping media, hopefully for uni extension chemistry but if not for either environmental science or geography. Has anybody done either of those subjects (or both) and could tell me what they're like? My friends doing geography say it's a lot of work, especially in year 12, so I'm not quite sure I'd be able to keep up but I adore the subject so I'm not sure. I really enjoyed all of my subjects, especially english language and chem. Englang was so different to core english and even though I liked core doing englang is so much better for me. Methods I honestly don't really know how well I'm going. Even though most of the content is revision + a little extra there's just so many topics it can be a little overwhelming. I'm fine with CAS tests but struggle with CAS free tests. At least 3/4 is more CAS based so I can hopefully not stress tooo much and work on the CAS free skills I need :)
(that was really long sorry)

My 1/2 exams start in exactly a week and aside from revising notes from time to time i have done... nothing. I focused really hard on my 3/4 which I hope paid off (feeling good about the exam and my results overall but honestly I have no idea what to expect). Gotta kick it into gear now, methods is first and for me that will require the most revision... oops.

I did most of those subjects a while back.* I also did university chemistry when I was in university so I guess it doesn't count, but if you do MUEP (Monash Extension), you'll be doing the same units (subjects). They weren't all that difficult, in fact they've been my best units except one. Also somewhat similar to Year 12 Chem when you get to the second semester.
* You can see my signature for the ones I did + Economics 1/2 and Chinese SL 1/2.

That feeling will become awfully familiar in later years. Welcome to your future.
In all seriousness though, wish you all the best in Psych 3/4 and the U3/4s to come! (Ironically Psych 3/4 was my Year 11 3/4 too!)

Welcome to the thread! I’ve been waiting for it to get more active too... traditionally the Year of 20xx have been really healthy but this one not so much :/ Let’s hope we have a few new faces next year?

Congratulations on finishing psychology!
Interesting that you liked 3/4 but thought 1/2 would be uninspiring! Which parts of 3/4 inspired you more?

I’m doing methods, chem and eng lang as well haha! My impressions are also pretty much the exact same. I find chemistry a lot more interesting than methods (and even more than English Language I suppose) but I haven’t been studying for it much at all.
I’m really going to have to reign it in next year.

Good luck with your 1/2 exams and keep us posted! :)

I did uni chemistry (MUEP) whilst in year 12 a year ago (2016) and would definitely recommend it. For semester 1 it's basically your only exam so you have heaps of time to study and get a good score. However for semester 2 you have your year 12 subjects so would probably neglect it a bit since it's only an increment but still possible to do very well if you enjoy chemistry. It's a great choice since the units aren't too difficult and getting 4.0/4.5/5.0 increments is much easier and a lot less time consuming than it would be to obtain a 40-50 SS :)

So I have an interview for school captain next Friday. They said the questions I'm going to be asked are how will you contribute to the school? What are your strengths? (Both of which I had to write about on the cover letter) and the one that's going to screw me over: what previous leadership experience do you have? (Within and outside school)

Now the problem is i don't have any leadership experience (because putting myself out there for it was always too scary - I'm regretting applying for this 😂)

The most leadership thing I've done is training new staff at work, but that's sort of something everyone does. Anyone have any ideas?

really regretting it at the moment

Ooh, good luck! IMO, anything you say needs to be from the heart - so anything we tell you to say probably won't be that good. :)

Just be honest, describe any experience you've had in the past and put a positive spin on any lack of experience, etc. It's a nerve-wracking process but you won't regret it! Probably one of the few regrets I have from high school is being a bit passive and not taking more leadership opportunities.

But yeah, back on topic - honesty is the best policy. Be your true and genuine self - because that's what you're gonna be like next year (you can't just project a fake personality for the whole year, after all), so best to show them what that is now. :)

I think a more important thing to consider is how you'll contribute to the school - the teachers interviewing you will care about that more than any experience you may or may not have had in the past.

Once again - all the best! Just give it a red hot crack and you'll be able to walk out of it proud of your efforts :)

I honestly wouldn't downplay what you've written here. What's your work at the moment? Going into Year 12, I'd certainly never trained others at work, and I'm sure many would be in the same position. IMO you could frame this really strongly.

I work in woolies deli. When we get new staff the deli manager is normally there for an hour or two, and then he finishes. Whichever other staff are on are left to teach them everything, which takes at least a month (how much they actually get taught per shift varies depending on how busy it is). Recently a lot of staff have been on leave due to uni exams and we got 2 new staff a couple of weeks before they left. So it has basically just been me, one other person and our managers who know enough to train them. Both of them have mostly been working late when our managers aren't there. Everyone else that didn't take leave have only been there for a few months (I'll have been there 2 years this Thursday - unfortunately I don't get a party until 10 years) or work across multiple departments and don't know deli that well - monday nights especially, they've been there longer than me but they still ask me if they have questions.

I have the most formal leadership experience out of anyone who applied and got vice. Experience isn't everything.
Don't stress about it, and if you're looking for additional leadership avenues let me know & I'll give you ideas.

Yay, work smarter not harder, kids! I love that motto, and it is actually so true! I have always tended to work hard, but be constantly getting sidetracked so that I would spend too much time doing things. Just a piece of advice I got from 'heids' is to go through the previous year's exam so that you have an idea of where you are headed for what you need to learn.

Thanks for the article mate. I thought it was great, as I think too often we go into Year 12 prepared for the stress and difficulty, but unprepared in ways to combat that. I think personally that the best way to be prepared is to have a good class community, as well as of course, this awesome group right here to add support.

Thanks heaps, AN!!
Luv ya!!

What does one do when the class decides on a Yr 12 motto that is in another language that no one knows and the word doesn't mean what they think it means (a home, a place where one receives strength), but really means a place in a bullfighting ring? Strikes me as mad...

I tried to treat this as a riddle and figure out what motto or word it could be, but I didn’t find it lol :(
I can see that you’re frustrated with the motto. It might be hard to accept, but the significance of the motto is between you and your classmates, right? Regardless of the dictionary definition, the connotations and unique meanings that motto or word will have for your grade might be something you can look at positively :)
If seems like you didn’t know it actually meant something to do with bullfighting to begin with. So instead of donning a cynical attitude to the decision your friends have made together, it might be more fun for you to create your own meaning from it.

Do you get extra time if you're late to a vcaa exam?
Title: Re: CLASS OF 2018!
Post by: PhoenixxFire on December 09, 2017, 11:33:54 am
You get the full writing time, but you don't get any reading time you miss

Quote from: VCAA
Where a student arrives late
A student arriving late for a:

Written examination, up to 30 minutes after the scheduled start of writing time, will be admitted to the examination room. The student is allowed the full writing time but is given no allowance for reading time.

Written examination, after 30 minutes from the scheduled start of writing time, but before the scheduled finish of writing time, may be admitted only if all the following conditions are met:
The principal of the host school, or the principal's delegate, recommends the student's admittance.

The student is admitted into the room on the understanding that their response materials may not be accepted by the VCAA. The student must be advised of this condition and must sign acceptance of this requirement on the Statutory Declaration.

The student completes a statutory declaration immediately following the conclusion of the examination declaring:
-the reason for being late for the examination
-the time of admittance to the examination room
-they have not seen or read the examination question book prior to their admittance
-they have not received any information about the contents of the examination question book
they understand that their response materials may not be accepted by the VCAA.

Appropriate arrangements can be made to enable the student to complete the examination and that it can be completed without disruption to other students.

The student is allowed the full writing time but is given no allowance for reading time.

performance or Languages oral examination or Extended Investigation oral presentation may have their assessment rescheduled to an alternative time, provided the student has a valid reason for the lateness, which must be endorsed by the student's home school.

So does this mean that he is only allowed the remaining time that's left and no extra time?

It means that if you arrive 20 minutes late to an exam that has 10min reading time then 2 hours writing time, you will finish 10min later than everyone else. You get the same amount of writing time as you would if you arrived on time, but no reading time (at least that's what I think it means).

Some of it will be relevant, some won't. If you don't want to buy the new one try and get one from 2017, but the new one is best.

The current methods and further study designs started in 2016, so they are relevant. Not sure about accounting, I'm afraid :)

As PF said, best to go for the newest ones :)

All other subjects changed the 1/2 the year before the 3/4 :)

The accounting study design's last year is in 2018. It's been around since 2013, so checkpoints from 2016 will be relevant for that. Have a look here http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/vce/studies/account/accountindex.aspx to confirm

They can't really be found because your school makes them. Try asking your teachers, some of my teachers use other schools SACs as practices, or ask for previous years tests. If you have friends doing it at a different school you could try asking if their teacher has given them any.

For some reason, the teachers at my school took down all the past and practise sacs from the website. I guess i'll have to try emaiing my teachers for any practise sacs

It depends on how much the study design has changed, someone here might be able to tell you. It is likely that some of it is relevant. I would be hesitant about starting VCAA exams this early in the year though as you will be wanting more at the end of the year.

Snowisawesome, just enjoy this break without stressing! It's called a holiday for a reason.

If you want better tips, it might be worth having a look at this post. There are also plenty of articles to help with that if you're so inclined, as well as the AN lectures coming in January.

If you feel stressed about starting year 12, there’s nothing stopping you from getting a solid head start on your subjects. I know that in the summer holidays before year 12 I dedicated a fair amount of time to getting ahead in maths along with plenty of relaxing. As for tips, my main advice is work hard, work smart, work consistently, get enough sleep, and most importantly, have something to look forward to every day that motivates you to study.

I think reading the textbook can be effective for some people as everyone has a different learning style. For me personally I didn’t find it that helpful as I preferred active learning which involved writing notes for content-based subjects and doing practice questions for skill-based subjects.

Most people won't retain much information from reading but this can be improved by:
-reading aloud
-making summaries
-talk to someone about what you've just read
-list down questions as you are reading

Yes, but...
It is important to take in the information in the textbook, and by simply reading you will know the content, but you won't know the content. To make sure that the content comes naturally, it is important to do supplimentary memory things. Such as: taking notes, annotating, doing questions, flash cards, etc.

yes but it's not for everyone.
For myself at a minimum I need to be highlighting and annoting the textbook to stay awake.

8/10? Definitely better than previous years academic-wise - I didn't do most of my holiday homework last year, (although i haven't actually started this year's homework yet...despite this being my 4th day spent mostly at the library). For some reason I started on the 'extra' stuff, rather than on the assigned homework. Will probably start my math homework today at some point...maybe. I'm dreading having to do my English homework though, and then i'll have to go to English class for a whole year  :'( Once I start my English work I suspect my holidays will be much worse, but it will be much better once its done :)

9/10 Loving the cool weather here in India as compared to 40+ degrees in Melbourne.

How's everyone's big year of 2018 started? Thinking about final exams already? Anyone do anything weird to start off the New Year like I did?
I met a guy I had known many years ago, and we decided to teach some of the Indian guys some sock-wrestling, so I had my first sock-wrestling bout in ages. Lost the first one, won the second, lost the third. ;P Still, it was fun and a great start to the year, and it was the most painful start to a New Year I have ever had, since we did it on the ground with rocks all around, with just a carpet to wrestle on. Good luck, class of '18!!

I'm going to start with my English Language, Specialist and Chemistry during the holidays as those to me are the most important. English language - must be in primary 4/ specialist - scales the most and has a great workload / chemistry - in the prerequisites of biomedicine.

It’s definitely a step up, but not a big one imo. My school didn’t even bother to cover anti differentiation or areas under curves in 1/2. I just did it out of my own interest. I’m slightly biased as I truly enjoy calculus but I do believe it’s not too difficult. I’ve been doing a significant amount of textbook questions and think, with practice, eventually it becomes easy. It’s just the starting that’s tricky :P

Quick disclaimer: I haven’t covered it all yet, still working through areas under curves at the moment. Don’t plan to touch probability yet though, heard it’s a pain

It will, it simply requires a knowledge of why you do certain things. To do well in Methods, Chemistry and Physics you need to not simply know the formulas and what to do with them, you have to understand what you are actually using the formulas to do. That was something my dad drummed into me, since when he would help me with maths he would never tell me the answers, but would ask me to talk through what I'm doing and why, and this is so useful. Always try to understand the background maths, and it will eventually  become easier. Hope this helps! :D

Yeah you're correct in that counting methods aren't part of the study design anymore, they used to be in it so that they could teach the hypogeometric distribution (don't stress, this isn't on the study design either!). But as Quantum said, counting methods (i.e combinatorics) can still be useful in other types of probability questions.

You are usually wiser to consolidate knowledge about calculus now, and then do the probability thoroughly and consolidate that knowledge so that you know all of the content well by exam time.

How can I study "smarter" and not "harder" so that the time i spend studying is useful and effective?

There was a discussion on that here. I'll post the most pertinent response:

I haven't thought about what I'm going to type yet, so you might come across a bunch of somewhat connected thoughts, but here are some ideas:

1. Limiting distractions. Don't take your phone into your study area. If you're trying to right an essay but are checking Facebook every three minutes, or if you're midway through a conversation with a friend, of course your work will suffer. You will lose your train of thought easily, and it's often quite difficult to get back into the 'study mindset'. Speaking of your study area:

2. Differentiate where you work and where you study. So for me, I never, ever studied in my room during VCE (I do now, but only due to necessity haha). Otherwise, I feel it's rather easy to get confused. For example, if you're trying to study on your bed (as I know a lot of people do), it would be easy to be tempted to just doze off for ten minutes (three hours).

3. Don't try to push yourself unnecessarily. If it's 10.30pm and you're absolutely knackered, go to bed. Sleep. If you have something that you really need to do, consider waking up early and doing it in the morning.

4. Prioritise. Do what you need to do - not what you want to do. I sometimes found myself doing countless hours of, say, VisCom in order to avoid Further, which I found relatively uninteresting. In one sense, that's a good form of procrastination. But in another sense, I would have benefitted much more from studying what I actually needed to study at the time.

5. Use to-do lists. I live by to-do lists and absolutely love them. Be organised. Have a diary. Do whatever it takes for you to feel on top of things. Sometimes, the hardest bit about studying is actually starting. I found that strategies like these help in that process, limiting time where you know that you should be studying, but you're not.

All of these strategies, really, are about efficiency. Why spend three hours on something when you can do it in an hour? Why struggle half-doing an essay for four hours when you can smash it out in two? It's all about being smart with your study strategies, and I guess that's what gives birth to the 'study smart, not hard' phrase. Of course, that's not to say that you shouldn't work hard; it just means that you shouldn't work hard fruitlessly (this evoked a mental image for me of studying next to a basket of fruit haha).

Do you have a common room?
Any study periods?

They've all been great bar psych.
Especially chemistry!

We did. I didn't find it as entertaining/interesting as other years, but it was good nonetheless.
We don't have a common room but we have a shared kitchen. Common room would have been cool but I think our school is surprisingly short on space.
18 a fortnight. Pretty good so far :)

I've really enjoyed Physics and Chemistry, they have always been my favourite subjects, and we've now spent so long on Projectile Motion in Physics, and find that in last years exam there was one Projectile Motion question worth 11% of the total!! Yay! Methods has been OK, pretty easy still, and English and Texts downright boring, but maybe they'll pick up...

Did you have first assembly for the year?
Do you have a common room?

First assembly was basically outlining the rules of the school to the Year 7s and telling the students how the building work is going, pretty useless and boring, but hey, it got us off an English period! :) We did have a common room, but because of building works it has become a maths classroom >:(
I do have "study periods" in the library, but that is my time for doing my distance Specialist Maths, so it doesn't really count. Otherwise none, since I've got a 6 subject load this year.

That sounds tough. I used to use my Eng Lang [distance ed] periods for other subjects anyway just because I found it easier to work on distance ed from home but I'm guessing that you did the same thing last year and have an established routine?

I'm suprised to hear that you're studying projectile motion.  Are you starting circular motion or fields soon?

Yeah, I actually do a lot of the distance ed stuff at home, but last year I found Spesh really easy. I don't expect to find the same this year, but fingers crossed :P

We started projectile motion last year right after exams, since the last topic we had studied in Unit 2 was Sport, and before that the Motion section, so these both supported the projectile motion part. We are about to move on to circular motion, and then on to fields.

They've all been pretty good so far. Physics, especially since the teachers are so active and adamant about us learning the subject. It's really engaging!!

Yep had an assembly first thing in the morning. Think the thing that stood out to me was all the new teachers that were being introduced for all the subjects. It's just a lot of teachers that are completely new to the school so I guess it kinda weird.

School's pretty open plan so no real common room but there's a bunch of rooms that we can hang in and just chill so they're awesome.

I'm thankful to have a lot of study preiods this year because I do MUEP Chem and I did Biology last year so I have a free period every day and it's a good time to relax and look forward.

Biology is defintiely one of the tougher subjects VCE can offer. What specific aspects are you finding tough? Remember ATAR Notes free help and advice if you ever require it. :)

If you haven't seen already here is the VCE Biology Question Thread for any subject questions you (or anyone else) wants to ask?

Also if you are interested here is a thread cookiedream posted last night where she went into detail on what she did to put her in a position to achieve a 50 in bio there is an abundance of more resources just like this on the biology board.

Thanks, Sine, I'll take the advice and the links! :) It's nothing specific, just the general difficulty grasping the idea of tiny things in their billions, every one of them riddled with strange names and theories, the sheer volume of the subject. Also a sense of inferiority, my older sister got a 42 in Bio, and I'm just not that 'smart'. I do try, though.  ::) (And TBH, this is probably the best place to complain about my misgivings, because people are darn helpful!)

Hmmm.. Not good. Because it is truly extracurricular, there is not a lot of emphasis on it over school coursework, so I actually missed the date for the first unit's submission. It's been a fair bit of trouble to get back into it, but the next unit is on Excel, so it should be good in the end...

Basically, I correspond with my training institue via email, the books are emailed out to me.
When I signed up for the course, I selected to do two units per year...
I now have to just polish my first assessment and try to redeem what I can from the late assessment, and move on.

We do accounting as a subject through year 12 - We're a very business focused school.

I chose the Cert IV because some of the units (a lot) were covered in class, so it was relatively easy.

Well...., haven't we come a long way?  :)

I'll show you all up when I only have one more 3/4 to study in Year 12 :)
Does five subjects in Year 12.

I'm not planning to do any math and even if I did there'd be no way I could do that well.
Does methods. (Not doing well hasn't changed much though lmao)

No explanation needed lmaoooooooo death (back when math was bearable...)

Was definitely right on those prospects changing wow.

I did do philosophy the following year, as well as psychology, which I apparently thought I'd do the year after.
No 3/4s in 2017 whatsoever (and here I thought I'd two!).
I did end up doing UMEP - but not in Year 12. I did indeed do chemistry.

Come a long way? I'll say!

Every year, people sitting the GAT decide on a certain "catchphrase" (hence, GATchphrase) to include in their GAT responses. I'm not really sure how or when it started, but it's definitely become a thing. I think the idea is probably to make the assessors think, like, "why are so many people talking about Rebecca Black?", or whatever the GATchphrase may be.

It's not compulsory. In fact, I recommend not doing it, because I think it'd only reduce the quality of your response(s). #funpolice

It's like a phrase that some students doing the GAT that particular year tries to work in to their essays. Last year it was on club penguin, and I'm pretty sure this year it's if the teacher doesn't arrive after 15 minutes students are legally allowed to leave.

Ok. That just seems like an odd idea. Especially because we will never see the assessors reactions anyway. Plus if VCAA knows the GATchphrase is a thing the assessors probably know about it anyway.

I probably won't do it then. Unless I can find a clever way to slot it in.

I'm on tomorrow. Will be incredibly stuffed, but hey, first day back ain't getting between me and the World Cup Final!

Good luck for term 3 everyone! I hope you've found your holidays restful and are ready to smash this term out of the park ;)
Thanks K888. I am regretting my study schedule a little, but ah well, I guess I will recover in this first week back!

It's unreal how close the end of the year is now, starting to really freak out.

I’m not even really scared about how close exams are anymore, I’m just so happy to be almost done with school (and in a couple of months I’ll never have to write another text response or media analysis ever again!)

I'll be at Further and P.E. on the 22nd, and Legal on the 30th! Sorry, Yertle, won't be able to meet-up with you - but Phoenixx, we're going to the same morning lecture! :)) (Finally lol)

I didn't think of this bit, but good point! It'll be a relief; comparatives are so awful -_-
How's everyone going with English atm? Is the whole '3 essays in 3 hours' thing still daunting, or have you been practicing?

You got an offer, then? Congratulations! That must be a weight off your back. :)

And to answer, no, I'm not really aiming for La Trobe, but I am applying for their other scholarships, such as Access, just in case. I am curious to see who wants to go to what unis though. I'm hoping for Monash.
What course are you aiming for?

I was originally aiming for Dent at Adelaide Uni, but UMAT happened. :(
And I got the conditional offer for dent at La Trobe so I'm stoked but still need to get a good ATAR. It is a huge relief though!
Good luck with applying for scholarships! I think I'll be eligible to get the relocation scholarship automatically as I'll be moving to Bendigo which is rural and I'm also hoping to get another scholarship. . . but it seems so competitive to get! Gonna apply to most anyway :)

Just saying, this is totally the wrong time of year to burn out. You have to be very careful with yourself at this stage of the year and 5 practice exams is far too much in my opinion. One is probably enough at this stage, and I doubt that I'll even manage that.

Be careful with yourself, and good luck! :D

Please make sure that you also take some time as breathing room and do a bit of socialisation :)

Maybe do one exam and then correct another exam. I usually find that works for me. I feel like doing 5 a day is not healthy at all. At most maybe do 2.

A late PSA for students considering a design (e.g. interior, vis comm, game design), architecture, music or performing arts course for next year:
If you are considering these types of courses, please take the time to find out when the interviews, portfolios, selection tasks or performances are going to be and prepare. Many of these are in October to December sometime. It'll be harder to enter these courses next year if you don't have these types of courses down already as a preference and take the appropriate steps to enter these courses.

I've heard often that one should leave the most recent exam for any given subject for last. I plan to leave the 2017 and 2018 NHT exams for last for most of my subjects. I was just wondering how long before the real exam are these advisable to be left alone?
On one hand I feel I could do it like more than 1-2 weeks earlier and simply spend the rest of the time after that revising. On the other it may be more beneficial to leave to simply a few days earlier to fully get in the exam taking groove.

With the English exam tomorrow, I just want to wish everyone the absolute best of luck for all their exams. It’s been a long year for everyone and now we are on the final home stretch. Let’s put in everything we have for the next couple weeks and look forward to the months of holidays awaiting us.
Remember to stay calm, take regular breaks, eat well and  stay hydrated.

Mainly understand that VCE is only a small part of your life. Your life is not dictated by how you go in the next few weeks. The best we can do it give it our 100% and hope for the best.

It’s been a pleasure to see you all develop on this forum through out the past several months. There are a lot of familiar faces that I hope will still be here next year.

Good luck!

It's been an amazing experience to get to know you all on the forums this year - gotta say, I think we're one of the best cohorts out there. Cheers, Lear! I want to echo that as well, good luck to everybody! For those who hate English like me, only 25 hours more of pain before it is all in the past! :P Hope everyone can stay focused and happy throughout this exam period and can remind themselves that this is not the part of our lives that define us. Who we are doesn't depend on the box with the number on it that VCAA tries to stuff us into. I have seen everyone on this forum show that they are more than a number, so focus on who you are rather than the marks you get.

Good luck, and happy exams to us all! :D

Hey everybody! Just wanted to pop by and, similar to the above, simply wish you all the very best for your exams. :) It's been a pleasure and privilege to see a lot of you develop this year (and much longer than that for some of you). Know that ATAR Notes is well and truly with you. :)

If you want to discuss your exams when they finish, as many people do, you can do so here. There are dedicated threads for each exam (and if there isn't one for an exam you've done, feel free to make one!).

Again, all the very best. :)

So fellow year 12s. This is the beginning of the end, the very last chapter of high school begins today for most of us.

Good luck all with the exams. This time will be though but we need to remember we are not alone and all we can do from this point is do our very best.

In just a few hours the first exam will be finished and you will never have to think of whatever text you have studied that you have grown to hate ever again.

Step by step we are going to make it through the exams, one step, one essay, one question, one exam at a time and before we know it we will be done.

Thinking of you all through this. 😊

Not sure if this helps but I was really worried that I'd get less than 25 on eng lang but in the end I did alright.

My advice to just not think about it at all. Forget what you wrote, forget the prompts, don't look at suggested solutions etc. Take a bit of a break for a bit if you feel super drained, and then shift your focus to the future. You'll be alright; enjoy the freedom :)

Short-term incapacitation. You’d know if you qualified. Things like having a cold or whatever don’t normally count. It’s more things like breaking an arm or detaching your retina or having a heart attack

I just blocked the English exam board. I don’t have anywhere near enough self control to just not click on it hahaha

Unfortunately, I didn't worry enough about English... :'(
Does anyone know what is required to get a moderated score based off the GAT?
Thanks Mini.
Rn 25 even sounds way too high... :-\

I have a friend who scored in the single digits for English and is studying a course that aligned with their interests at RMIT.
(from memory they wrote one sentence in their exam)

Whatever happens, it's not the end. You keep moving forwards, it's ok.

Lol. I spent the whole Sec C just going off at the Jenkins dude for being a bigot and not even trying to understand other demographics.
I hope assesors take it in the spirit it was meant. :-\

Also, those questions and answers on Calmer Cafe's Google are actually kinda funny! :)
But leaving 1 star reviews is bullshit.

Genuinely English was my biggest worry out of all subjects. Despite exams just starting I already feel somewhat free.
Same! The rest of my subjects are pretty chill haha

Although I am happy for you guys I'm kinda regretting not just doing normal English. I don't have my first Exam till Monday and EngLang (the one I'm really worrying about) isn't till the 16th.

No, really - be glad you're doing EngLang. Knowing you IRL, you'll do better in that than normal English. And besides, regrets shouldn't be a thing right now. Just work hard and do your best with what you've got. :)

I feel you. In the morning I went to school before the exam to rub it in all my friends' faces that I don't have an exam. 3.5 hours later they came out rubbing it in my face that they've got one less exam to worry about.

Lemons to lemonade, hey - I'm sure they'll do just fine. Although it's funny for a little bit, giving bad reviews on a professional site is old news - TSFX deserved it, at least. Jonty Jenkins needs to pull his head in

So, what's up for everyone? Anything else this week? Rest a little tonight and give yourselves a pat on the back - I got an ice-cream and went for a walk. We all deserve it :)

Obviously English, last week. I had Eco the day after that, and Methods 1 today.
Methods 2 tomorrow, Physics next Wednesday.
Why does wednesday need a capital? :(

English and further are done, outdoor ed on Monday next week and enviro on Friday.

Haven’t started studying for outdoor ed yet. Somehow relaxing on Monday after the last math exam turned into 3 days of relaxing (oops). Got work tonight, but I think that’s all for this week, so will get back into it tomorrow.

Sadly I haven’t had a chance to burn any of my practice exams yet (damn rain), so they’re still piled all over my desk even though I don’t need them.

Also, I got distracted and then the weather got cold so I didn’t end up getting that ice cream that you made me crave, and that’s just sad.

Just a sorta chop and slop of a couple examples I have...
I am using the relevant bits of my brothers old one, and some parts from the ones on the notes section here, as well as a couple of the tables in the back of the checkpoints books.

No doubt someone's gonna get full marks. As far as I know no one in my school's methods 3/4 cohort did. Our methods rank 1 did get the last question right, but she forgot to put dx behind every single integral sign, so... yeah.

No use stressing over an exam that has already happened, to be honest. Just focus on whatever subjects you still have left and ace them all ;D All the best for the rest of your exams.

Same. During my SWOTVAC and exam days I've been showing up at school consistently in a navy blue shirt and beige cargo pants, to the point where my principal came up to me and said 'Do you own any other clothes?'

Also I wonder how weird it would be if I kept wearing my year 12 jacket in uni. I paid 90 bucks for that, and it's super comfortable.

It does take a while to get used to.
However I know people that rotate the same 2-3 outfits everyday (I am a culprit of this too at times aha). No one will really care that much about what you wear ^-^

Slightly socially frowned upon (generally by older year levels) but people do it anyway.  Aside from the odd person or two,  generally people don't care what you wear unless there's a specific reason. (Eg if you have a lab you need to wear appropriate shoes, if you're representing the uni wear conservative clothing ). The worst that happens socially is someone making a meme about "so many people wearing x on campus"
TLDR; in general,  wear what you want

All it means is that you have over 100 posts.

Every post milestone you are given a new name like that in your profile and every few milestones you are given an extra square next to your name.

Although I believe there is another post explaining this I am unable to find it right now. However this link seems to list them pretty accurately.

I don't think so. I think VCAA purposefully does not give back exam papers. Can you imagine 10000 kids across Victoria trying to call up VCAA to argue for marks. Would be a mess haha.

You can pay to have a look at your exam, but you only get it for 15min and it has to be at your school and supervised and there’s no marking on the actual exam, just your answers so there’s no point.

Um so I'm not sure if this is in the right spot, but I've heard that apparently for subject scaling you get scaled according to the scaling of the year you graduate, not necessarily the year you did your exam? So for example I did a lote last year but the actual scaling will be depending on this year's cohort?

Can anyone confirm if this is true?

Also hi everyone I've been lurking around for quite a while but never got to know my fellow 2018 graduates :D
Nope, that is definitely not true.

You get scaled in the year that you do the subject - however these scaled scores (from memory) are not avaliable to those students before year 12 so they need to find someone else who did the subect in the same year and got the same score to determine scaling. They could also look at the scaling report for the year they sat the subject in (and extrapolate from those scores if required).

I didn't have this experience so I'm interested to hear from everyone later if this manifests for them & if so how well they predicted what it would be like

It doesn't really feel like holidays, surprisingly I'm not super bored yet either. I think it'll be a bit different after results come out, at the moment I still kinda feel like I'm in high school

Relatable ;D
I still have my 6:00am alarm on every morning and feels incredibly guilty if I sleep past that. It feels weird to have no schedule all of a sudden.

Also this morning I picked up a pen and physically wrote something for the first time in a week and it felt *off* lol.

Has anyone started prepping for next year yet - eg applying for youth allowances and stuff.

Haven't yet but I'm going to soon - Apparently you can get Youth allowance from Jan 1st, I thought you had to wait until you had course details but apparently not (although I'm not entirely sure how I'm supposed to apply without it).

Also RIP me, apparently I'm too good at saving money at they're gonna make me wait a month or so until they'll give me youth allowance because I have too much money in my bank.

Also centrelink is really confusing, don't even know how it's supposed to work because from Jan 1 I'll be living at home but I'll be moving out later so I guess I have to change it or something??

(I was trying to figure all this out this morning, hence the confused ranting lol)

Independence for youth allowance isn't based on whether or not you live with family,  but if you are living away from home you can get a higher rate

I feel this so much haha. I stopped my alarm a while ago but still wake up early!

And yup, been prepping for next year and all its woes... although right now I’m just crying over Steve Trevor’s heroics in Wonder Woman. The way he says ‘I love you’, and at the end she types ‘thanks for bringing him back to me’ gets me every time
Still doesn’t feel like holidays! I guess keeping busy makes it a fairly seamless transition. Has anyone gone on a wild getaway yet? Do tell how schoolies goes :))

Yeah that's what I meant, I assume I'll have to tell them at some point that I'm moving out so that they give me the higher rate.

You're both so good at waking up early, I've been sleeping in until 8 or 9 every morning lol. After the second maths exam I stopped waking up early because I didn't have to anymore haha. I keep meaning to wake up earlier because I don't like wasting all my daylight hours being asleep but it has yet to happen

You should probably fill in Tax File Number forms soon too, if you haven't already. You'll need it for next year anyway if you want to get a CSP for your tertiary course or a job of any sort (part-time, casual, full time, contract), which I imagine is a lot of the Class of 2018. TFNs can take a while to arrive (read: up to 6 weeks IIRC), so might be worth a shot before Christmas arrives.

Question - my parents are moving overseas in January next year permanently but I'll still be in Australia, would I still be considered 'dependent' though? I'm reading through the criteria list but it's so confusing...
Also everything I've found on youth allowances so far are for uni students over 18. I'll still be 17 for the most of the next year though, how different would it be?

Argh I'm not ready for adult life

Pretty sure you'd still be a dependent, although there is a criteria for independence that's something about parents not being able to look after you - I'm pretty sure that mostly relates to family violence situations, but it may apply if they can't look after you cos they're overseas (kinda doubt it though). There's a criteria for being 16 or 17 and needing to live away from home to study so I think it'd be the same.

Holy moley. I'm feeling so nostalgic reading this thread. I just finished my first year at UoM but it still feels like I finished VCE yesterday :o. I still remember coming out of my last exam thinking to myself "okay... what the f*ck... now what?". I'm naturally a productive person and get really bored really quickly, so I felt super guilty getting up at 11 am on a weekday - just like many here... waow.

Anyway, enjoy the break everyone, and make the most of it! Take some time to do what you want to do in your life, because for a lot of you, you'll be back to work tackling your first semester of uni before you blink! ;)

I, for one, am already starting to feel the nerves creep up on me. 14 days left *shudders*.

I’m just thinking that someone out there is reading my exam and is like ‘what the **** is this?’

This is a visual representation of me every time I accidentally start worrying about results

I seriously don't think that anyone will be able to read the last few sentences that I wrote on my enviro exam because I was in such a rush (the invigilator skipped me and let me keep scribbling when she was collecting exams at the end ;D)

I would’ve thought marking exams would’ve been over by now lol. My english teacher is an assessor and I came a few days later for another exam and he’s like oh yeah I’ve already marked a few. So, shit. I’m just thinking that our papers have already been marked and the number is already there and now it’s just a matter of time before we see that number. Gosh I’m getting nervous just typing this

What do people reckon we should open first, ATAR or study scores?

Also is it true that if you’re overseas when results come out you can’t view it until 7:15am AEST?

Aaaahh I’m getting so nervous hahah! I had a nightmare last night where I opened up the website and got a 49 ATAR lol :'(
I'm definitely going to start with study scores! I figured out if I get my specialist and english language Study Scores to add to at least 65 (e.g. Lang 33, Spec 32) I've pretty much secured a 95, so that way it will be a bit of a indication of ATAR anyway and it won't be so much of a surprise to just be hit with some random 4-digit number :O

1. Defo study scores lol. Baby steps before the big dive!

2. Not necessarily but most likely. Mostly due to congestion (everyone trying to access their results) and domestic connections probably having a greater chance of latching on than international IPs.
It's also not uncommon for people in Australia to have to wait past 7am to get their results. Most years the website crashes at least once.

3. I've had multiple ATAR dreams and they are not short of nightmares lol. My first was 97.69 (hmmmm...lol). Most recently it was 93.35. Both are not bad but I still freak out (esp not getting methods prerequisite!!)
A friend of mine dreamt she got 35 lol.

does anyone have an estimate as to when the honour roll will come out?

I don't have an answer to this unfortunately but instead another question: does anyone know when the honour roll is published in the newspaper? (it's in The Age, right?)

Looks like last year’s was December 13 (https://www.theage.com.au/national/2017-vce-student-honour-roll-20171213-h03sl8.html), I’m not sure what day the results actually came out though. Can a 2017 year 12 confirm please?

Also, does the honour roll show raw or scaled scores? So if I got 40 in a subject that scaled to 38, would I be on it for that subject?

And also, has anyone not received their vass email with gat results yet? My friend told me she received them just before 7 and I haven’t yet, and it’s almost been 3 hours.

Might just be coming out slowly, so I'd wait a little. There's a lot (50k+) of you so it might take a little time to get to everybody.

Hey guys! Just wondering, does anyone know what exactly is the purpose of the VCE Baccalaureate? Like, I guess it could potentially make your VCE certificate seem more “fancy” but is there a practical purpose (like when applying for courses/unis and stuff). Thanks!
Nope. Just looks kind of cool in your resume and says “I’m a diverse student”. And you get a different shade of blue in your certificate so it looks a little fancier. (I received one of these in the first year they were given out, hence why I know.)

EDIT: Its purpose was to reward and attempt to encourage a more diverse subject range (including one of the "higher level maths" - VCAA's words not mine) and at least 5 U3/4 subjects. IIRC, to receive it, you have to study a LOTE, Maths (either Methods or Spesh) and English (or equivalents; 30+ raw SS, except EAL where 33+ raw SS). This is confirmed with this document.
