Timetabling starts on 30th January and this is the thread to discuss timetables!
Anyways here are a few tips I got from tram to get you started:
my general advice about timtabling:
1) Put your tutes early in the week. You cover last week's materiel in tutorials and it's better to get one topic out of the way before getting too into new material otherwise you're trying to learn lots of stuff constantly.
2) Don't cram all your subs together, spread them out during the day, this means you are at uni for longe each day. This is what you want, you want breaks in between classes to hang with new people you met in the previous tute/lecture, and time to chill and catch up with old friends. Also if you can get an hour free before each tut-always handy to catch up on any tute work you were meant to do during the week. Also free time gives you time to go to consults.
3) Make sure you make sure you have time to get form class to class-the uni campus is quite big and running across it is not fun early in the morning with a bag, look at a map of the uni when doing your timetable
Obviously I followed none of these tips but here's what my timetable will probably look like:
So how is everyone going about their timetabling adventures?
-
Last year, my brother managed to compress his entire 1st semester BArts Lecture/Tutorial timetable into 3 days.
Hoping to do something similar, I looked up the University Timetable and the first thing I noticed was :
Calculus 2
-------------------------
Lecture 1 - Monday
Lecture 2 - Wednesday
Lecture 3 - Friday
Introductory Microeconomics
------------------------------------
Lecture 1 - Tuesday
Lecture 2 - Thursday
-
If you want to wag lectures, put them all in the morning so you can sleep in and rock up for tutes in the afternoon :)
Probably not good advice but oh well.
-
what time does the timetabling open? the timetable for principles of marketing is not up yet so i'm a tad worried!
oh and i see you've chosen chinese 7! :)

Yeah I know someone doing biomed where they have set lectures on mon, wed, fri but they chose microeconomics which made them come to uni on tues and thurs D:

ahaha yea they finally got the timetable out :D
-
Where do we go to see the timetable? lol
-
You can comfortably break all three of those rules if it makes it easier, I certainly never worried about 1 or 3 and only rarely about 2.
-
What do I do if my breadth subject is say, Chinese? How would I plan my timetable..
-
you want to go uni for all 5 days!!!!???
edit: btw what app did you use to make your timetable?? it looks prettyyy
also is it better to make it so that you concentrate on only 1 subject per day??? or better to mix it up and clump lectures into one day, tutorials into another day etc.

I have to go to uni for all 5 days in semester 1 unfortunately :( math lectures are only on everyday cept wednesday but i have chinese then
and i used microsoft excel 2010 :) just changed the font and colour of the boxes
-
Do lectures and tuts get booked out if you don't plan ur timetable early enough?
-
Do lectures and tuts get booked out if you don't plan ur timetable early enough?
Very often, especially for popular subjects. That's why it's important to get in early
-
Thanks for that, i'm just confused about one thing. i need to attend weekly classes for my lectures and tutorials but for pracs its only " 6 x three hours of practical activities during semester".
But looking at the timetable, pracs run every week with 8 repeats a week. So do i just pick one of these classes, attend for 6 weeks and just stop going to them after that?
-
What time does timetabling open tomorrow? :D
-
What time does timetabling open tomorrow? :D
10am
-
Did a rough plan of my timetable already.
5 days a week, mostly 9am-5:15pm. Doesn't help living so far away either...
AND most of my lectures etc are back to back so more fun times for me.
-

No it's more ordered than that. You pick a time and then you will be allocated a prac group. Your particular group will have their prac on a particular set of weeks, going through the pracs in a particular order.
-
Pretty happy with this timetable.. Mondays off, Tuesdays and Wednesdays I have lectures so I don't have to go but I probably should..

So is there a recommended order for the timetables??
tutorials first, lectures mid-week and practical last???

do whatever is best for you, depends on how you learn.

Do you need to have attended the lectures beforehand to know what is going on in the practicals/tutorials?? :S

Yea it's fine. If I ceebs I cant just skip the maths lecture on monday and the maths+economics lecture on thursday or join some random economics lecture later on in the day. Plus the 10 minutes between subjects should be fine
-
Just a random question; are we allowed to bring food/drinks into the classes???
-
Just a random question; are we allowed to bring food/drinks into the classes???
I think that depends on the lecturer/tutor and if they think it's rude or not. I think drinks are usually ok though.
-
In lectures its fine. In tutes ask your tutor because its a bit rude if you're just eating whilst they work. In pracs its 100% not okay, prac rooms aren't for eating in
-
Guys. Why did I stay up till 5am?
-
Guys. Why am I awake at 9am when there is no possible way I have anything less than five days a week and yes I know my timetables up until now have been amazing and I did three days a week as a first year science student but I reserve every right to complain about THE SHIT THAT WILL BE THIS SEMESTER I want to cry.

I can seem to access the timetabling registration page. Is it normal that it says all classes are full? :s
-
Peter, it opens at 10am. Does it say 'registration closed'?
-
sigh, just when i get used to not having to deal with the uni again, i get welcomed back to uni life with the portal crashing..... it's good to be back....
-
I'm prepared! I have three timetabling screens open across two laptops. I'll get the timetable I want if it kills m.
-
This morning is going to be so much fun.
I predict:
1. jaffies will be confused and shocked by the IT system
2. mavis will stage another breakdown
And a reminder that ALL timetable chat is to be contained in this thread.
-
2. mavis will stage another breakdown
WHAT DO YOU MEAN STAGE RUSS, THEY'RE ALL ENTIRELY AUTHENTIC.
-
Guys. Why did I stay up till 5am?
I quite liked one of your statuses now that you mention it. :p
-
So, looks like you bastards swamped the student portal. How dare you be keen. ;D
-
I'm already in... not that I think it'll really make much of a difference tbh.

What's with the 8 hour workshop on Thursday for Business Law?

Does no classes available mean that it hasn't opened for that particular subject yet? (Japanese 1)
It's possible. As you know the second placement test hasn't been done yet. Howecer it might open up b4 that.
-
What does it mean by '1 class not registered' or '2 classes not registered' ??
-
Guys, is it okay if i miss one calc 2 lecture a week?

Meh, just clicked on 'Generate clash free timetable'.
Ended up with more or less what I was going to put down anyway.

I got in but every time I try to save it crashes D:
edit: Does anyone know why Chemistry 1 only has 2 lectures times? I thought there were 3?

How do I even timetable for an 8 hour studio...
-
Guys, is it okay if i miss one calc 2 lecture a week?
you should catch up on it though, cause you'll have to be constantly taking notes, so its not really recommended to skip lectures.
-
How do I even timetable for an 8 hour studio...
:o
-
OH RIGHT GUYS! I figured it out, there's MORE sessions that are listed to the right of some sessions (if there are multiple sessions taking place at the same time). Finished my timetable. :D
I just ignored the 8 hour studio and slapped it on the thursday, clashing with 3 of my classes.

Runtime Error
Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.
Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. Naww. So cute. Well, I got some classes registered and then it told me a lecture did not exist, then it existed and clashed, tried to change it and save and it gave me an error.
I think I might make a chai latte and just sip it whilst this monstrosity eats itself.
-
Is anyone else having troubles with Introductory Microeconomics? Its the only subject that gives me a application error when I press the Save button..
-
(http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/q523/peedles3/PetersTimetableSemester12012.jpg)
How did you manage it so quickly, I'm still getting run time errors.
-
(http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/q523/peedles3/PetersTimetableSemester12012.jpg)
Sounds like you're gonna miss all the funtimes during lunch. :O
-
Slowly dying.... Every time I try to get in I get either: a runtime error, an application error or being told that I'm not 'authorised to use this function' and now the page isn't found.
-
I can't even load Portal anymore..
-
Can anyone help me? Everytime I try and register for Biology Cells and Organisms there's an error. >__> Not the run time error.
i keep getting the same thing -.-
-
Okay, I have a slight problem. My creative writing lecture clashes with my maths prac, and my creative tute is the next day. Would the lecture be uploaded on Lectopia in time for me to listen or will I be clueless for all my tutes because I wouldn't know what was taught the day before?
-

Sounds like you're gonna miss all the funtimes during lunch. :O
Some people got theirs done ages ago.
-
OMG i have the same clash...AHHH! and there's only one of creative writing --"
-
I skipped half my creative writing lectures and never listened in, they're not that important if you can bullshit your tute
Not that bad is it...it's only about 20-22 hours a week.
I'll remind you of this comment in a month's time
-
OMG i have the same clash...AHHH! and there's only one of creative writing --"
It's a tad worrying. They better be prompt in uploading his/her lecture! :)
-
I asked this earlier but everyone was raging and busy trying to get their timetables settled lol
-How come Intro to microeconomics wasnt there with my other subjects to register for the timetable? I'm sure i enrolled in it last night...
-Why did it say '1 class not registered' or '2 classes not registered'? I wouldve gone back and selected the pracs/tutes at least 3 or 4 times and pressed the 2 different save buttons but still had the same error.
Hopefully this is only has something to do with the lag and crappiness of the site... lol
-
Peedles you're a bitch, that is one fine timetable.
-

What happens at lunch?... I usually don't go to any of them anyway LOL... yeah got my timetable done at 10:04. Melb Uni computers wurt urppzzz :P
mavis: ya know it :)
-
giving up, now hoping Generate Clash Free Timetable button will work
-
Wooooh, super long days.. :D
-
If I've already registered classes for 3 subjects and then press generate clash free timetable, will it only register me for my fourth subject?
-
Wooooh, super long days.. :D
your monday clashes?
-
Is there anyone else finding that once they are able to register for classes, that all the lectures, tutes and pracs have like a blue circle with a chain through it?
I cant seem to do anything!
Anyone please tell me im not alone!
-

It means they're part of a stream. There should be a list on the left or somewhere with the streams and you pick one.
-
Wooooh, super long days.. :D
your monday clashes?
Yeah, gonna skip the calc 2 ones. I really want two days off.
I think it should be fine. :s

Wake up at 11am, portal is down so access timetables via this link
Come up with this;
Who said timetables were hard :P
-
I cant seem to enrol for the micro econ tute, tried about 5 times
-
If on one of the classes it says "Unavailable?" There will be 3 more places available on February 20. Does this mean it's full? Any chance that it'll become available?
-
What's with the 8 hour workshop on Thursday for Business Law?
Would like to know as well.... trippin balls here
-
Has anyone successfull done any fo their Bio Cells and Organisms lectures/practs/tutes??
COuld you tell us how you did it.. :P
-
For some reason this website does not want me to turn up to biology...
-
fuuuuuuuuuu can't even get into the timetabling url
-
If on one of the classes it says "Unavailable?" There will be 3 more places available on February 20. Does this mean it's full? Any chance that it'll become available?
Yes, there will be three more places available. On February 20. Unless someone moves out of it before then, you have to wait until then to register into it, there are two releases for large first year subjects.
-
yay it seems to be working now... i've done 3/4 subjects
-
Anyone find out anything about that 8 hour lecture for Business Law Principles?
-
Peedles: Why are there 3 lectures for UNIB20007? Coordinator says 2, portal lists 3 lectures yet I cant find the 3rd among the selections?
-
Is there anyway to get into the study planner? I need to enrol into another subject....
-
damn always stuffs up when i do biology

Meh, I've finished (what I can) timetabling.
All that's left is French 3 but I haven't been able to enroll in that yet.

wow there are hardly any classes when you get to third year :O do the amount of classes go down as you go up year levels?
-

Thanks for that. I think someone just moved out of it because it became available!
As for the 8 hour studio for Business Law, I'm assuming it's a bug or something because: (1) A weekly lecture; (2) A weekly computer-assisted task to be done out-of-class; (3) A weekly voluntary consulting session. The 3 skills tasks and the final exam are all computer-based tests in multiple-choice format, done under supervision in computer labs.
And it's only 4 hours of commitment per week?
-
guys what are these streams?

Yeah, so an eight hour studio chewing up my Thursdays is really giving me the shits ;p Also "No classes currently available. Please try again soon" for three of my classes under BLAW. And one under my uni breadth sub. Does this mean I cannot get into a class or they just haven't put the timetables up?
-
wow there are hardly any classes when you get to third year :O do the amount of classes go down as you go up year levels?
For the subjects I took, it's pretty much only first year that's jam packed. With second year onwards, the subjects I did either had three lectures (some had a tute), or a 3 hour prac and a lecture. Anatomy is the one where you have three lectures and a prac though.

What is wrong with micro economics?!?

Intro to Microeco is the only subject I'm still struggling with :(

Holy fucking shit. How can you possibly get such a timetable? That's worse than high school.

MD
-
Hate the application error I'm getting with intro to microeconomics
Same.. anyone actually manage to timetable this subject?
-
Ok my dilemma is.....
I enrolled in every subject last night, but it wont let me enrol in intro to marcro... It says that 'You are unable to enrol in this subject because the Pre-requisite of ECON10004 - Introductory Microeconomics has not been met'
But in the study planner it shows that i am enrolled in it.... Which leads to me not being able to see it in my timetable...
What do i do?
-
holy shit what course is that???
MD
Lol, was wandering why there were so many pracs and lectures for only 1 subject
-
holy shit what course is that???
MD
LOL there are so many clashes in his timetable! I'm scared to do MD now...is DDS just as bad?
-

Those would alternate weeks, wouldn't have all the pracs all on the same day at the same time (even potential doctors aren't that good!)
As for DDS, looking at the contact hours for the subjects in the handbook, I'd say so.
-
I hate you all
(http://i.imgur.com/PfgrN.png)
How does that work? Obviously you can't be in two/three places at the same time.
-
damn everytime i press save for microeconomics it gives me an error....
-
How does that work? Obviously you can't be in two/three places at the same time.
Or can you...?
-
Strictly speaking you don't do 2 pracs a week, it's more random than that, but it's still a pretty big "fuck you" from the MEU
How does that work? Obviously you can't be in two/three places at the same time.
You just gotta pick which one you can't go to and hope you don't get failed for missing the other
-
Hopefully this is decent. There's still a couple Principles of Business Law classes that are still yet to be timetabled (not available yet).
-
Im stuck at work and can't access the portal cause apparently it's down... sigh. Lucky it's third year though, not many options for the timetable anyway so shouldn't miss out on too many of the good timeslots
-
OMG. I got into Biol.
OK. So figure out your whole timetable (apart from Bio), and then press "Generate clash-free timetable".
It put bio in the gaps (and thus made the timetable I was going for).
Soo, eitehr it randomly generated a whole new timetable that was exactly what I had before + bio, or it randomly put bio in where it wouldn't clash. :D
-
damn everytime i press save for microeconomics it gives me an error....
lol I called up about that.. they said just keep trying -.-

Just go to the 9am lectures, it doesn't really matter. Also it's normally the least attended lecture as you know, it is 9am and all :p

yea otherwise i would have 3 hour straight lectures with no break. So you can just pop into lectures that you havn't signed up for?
-
There's only one lecture option for Chem lecture 2 and same with Media and Society lecture 2. Unfortunately they clash together and I can't change either. What can I do :(?

That sucks :/

Why all the breaks in between everything?
You're going to have LONG days at Uni :P

Can you do both intro to micro and macro concurrently or is it strictly you have to do micro first as it is a prereq?

He/She wants recess and lunchtime breaks XD

Peedles: Why are there 3 lectures for UNIB20007? Coordinator says 2, portal lists 3 lectures yet I cant find the 3rd among the selections?
According to the timetable handbook, it might only be for two days:
"UNIB20007 L03/01 09th & 23rd Mar Friday 1:00pm - 2:00pm Th:207 Bouverie St-Theatre 2 1 hour"

3 hour straight lectures + extra sleep > lectures with breaks
I did it :)
Do it again.
-
yea otherwise i would have 3 hour straight lectures with no break. So you can just pop into lectures that you havn't signed up for?
Yup. If anything they'd probably people rather go to the 9am lecture as it'll be a lot emptier. Though three straight lectures isn't that bad, I had that first year (biology, chemistry, physics) and it's not as bad as you think. Plus you get an extra hour's sleep, which you'll come to adore :D
Massive thanks man. Really didn't want to be stuck in a Friday afternoon locomotor prac haha
Exact same reason why I bothered waking up to do my timetable ;D

anyone enrolled in finance 1? If so, what times are available?
-
but i dont think i can concentrate for 3 straight hours every monday/wednesday/friday :/
It's not hard. There's a 10 minute break between lectures anyway.
-
do we have time to make it to next classes if we have them one after another? looks like i have two days off :D
-
I did it :)
Dude, do your timetable again. There's nothing wrong with having classes right after each other. See all those breaks inbetween classes is most likely going to be wasted time.
-
Is it down or something?

What's a better day to have off?
Tuesday or Thursday?

Okay I'll try and be a little more specific.
What's a better day to have off?
Tuesday OR Thursday?
The reason I'm asking is because I don't want to miss out on things on days I wouldn't be at Uni.
I thought the Student Union has BBQs every Tuesday so I wouldn't want to miss those right?

Nope I think it's manageable - but it's up to what you prefer (obviously).

Trying to change times for my tutorials but I keep on getting application error.

one hour or two hour lunch breaks?
-

same im trying to change my tutes as well and these errors are making me frustrated lol

You have to do micro in 1st semester and macro in the 2nd. Im guessing you have them the other way around?
-
does this look like an okay timetable?
-
any one else having problems choosing biology classes (the cells and organisms one)???????
-
Is it a bad idea to have two different tutorials, one after another? Or should I spread them out? Also, for Chemistry, does it matter if I do my tutorial before or after my practical?
-
any one else having problems choosing biology classes (the cells and organisms one)???????
I just had to generate clash free timetable, otherwise it kept freezing with biology.

Why all the breaks in between everything?
You're going to have LONG days at Uni :P
I don't know how to get anywhere :(

I don't know how to get anywhere :(
Carry your uni diary around with you for a while until you know where everything is, there's a nice handy map in there (maybe even mark the positions of buildings). There are also heaps of very helpful people at the uni that will happily point you in the right direction if you do get lost :)
Few helpful directions to get to various lecture theatres here too;

So can anyone explain what the deal is with these 4 unavailable classes for Business law?

I don't have one ??? Were we meant to get one at AAD?
And would anyone like to swap their Engineering Systems Design 1 Workshop time slot from 9am-12pm and Philosophy: The Big Questions Lecture 1 and Tutorial 1 1-2pm 2:15-3:15pm with mine? :D
Edit: @SDPHD: I think I just obliviously enrolled into the same ESD1 & Calculus classes as you..early starts eh? ;D
-
biology still doesnt freaking work
-
You get it when you get your student ID's from memory. If not, you can get it from your student centre. If you have an iPhone, there's also a unimelb app!
If not you can always print off a map;

had the same problem someone referred me to clicking the 'automatic clash free timetable generator' thingie, and then you just change your other subjects back to how you want them.

does anyone know why I can't login to anything melb uni related? even the email, it says my username doesn't exist
getting really worried...
-
So two of my days I have a Calculus 2 lecture and thats it for the day, reckon I could get away with not going? Do the lecturers tell us what material will be covered for each lecture in advance and I could just learn it myself at home?
-
Why can I still not do my intro to microeconomics tutorial?!?
And I made my semester 2 timetable when the subject timetables came out in october. But NOW WTF UNIMELB??!?! You said the lecture times for accelerated maths 2 were all in the morning but why are they in the late after noon NOW?!! fml gonna lose job i hate this timetable:

-
I can't generate my timetable yet since the MGSE has closed registration for its classes until further notice. All I know is that I'll most likely have a very busy five-day week.
I can already tell I'm going to miss the five-day weekend I had in my BA last year, haha. :P
-
I think mine is pretty good. I don't know about the walking distances...
The longest walking distance is on Thursday - from Architecture building to The Spot.

Is it really far to walk from the "Old Geology" building to "100 Leicester St"?? :-\

how far is the walk from old arts to david caro coz i have two classes back 2 back

Peedles: Why are there 3 lectures for UNIB20007? Coordinator says 2, portal lists 3 lectures yet I cant find the 3rd among the selections?
The two random lectures on Fridays are for non-VCE or uni bio people.
These aren't lectures, they are workshops that are optional and are intended for students who do not have a background in science to provide extra support with learning basic genetics. There will be some further information about these provided in the first lecture.
If you have already had classes in genetics, at highschool or in first year biology, you will not need to attend these workshops.

For once in my life, I didn't get reamed by the uni. Got all the classes I wanted and was done by 10.05am. Sorry to everyone who got fucked over.

There are only 3 of the Monday pracs in the whole semester and as mentioned above, don't have to go to the two GHS lectures at 1.00pm on Fridays either
I'd better enjoy this semester because the next one is going to have pracs like every week. :/
-
^^^
Until they're 5 hour pracs, quit complaining :P
Also you can skip every GHS lecture (I know you won't, but you can)
-
Yeah.. my time table.
'Spose it's not to bad, just wish it wasn't so spread out. And before you ask, there is only one time slot for the BIOL1002 lectures and that's at the beginning of the friggen day ._. If worst comes to worst I can always skip that lecture ( and the two following it ;]) and rock up at 1 on a Monday.
At least I get Thursday off =D
-
Is it bad to have three tutes in a row?
and the fact that i did it purposely

that micro tute belongs in monday 10am
acinod, how have you enrolled in Chinese already? don't you have to attend the interview first?
My study plan isn't letting me enrol yet which is kinda annoying since I wanna make my timetable!
-
What exactly is the rush like when more classes open up (i.e. on the 20th of Feb)? I was on a plane over the Indian Ocean at 10AM yesterday and by the time I got home (7pm) most stuff was gone, and atm I can't even construct a clash free timetable on account of stuff being full, so I'm hoping I'll be able to fix everything on the 20th...

Probably a whole heap of people shitty with their timetables and fighting tooth and nail for classes. ISIS will probably crash, too.

During the Chinese info sesh at Academic Advice Day, the guy told us about the 4 streams for chinese. Non-chinese/no vce, non-chinese/did vce chinese, chinese, crazy chinese (fobs)
He told us that this year, the enrolling process is different because you can do your enrolling and timetabling before your interview so he told us to enrol into what stream we think we'll get into and then do timetabling but still have to go to the interview. I guess they changed it so you can't enrol into chinese now since they're scared that heaps of people will enrol into the wrong stream (i know so many that enrolled into chinese post-vce when they should be doing chinese 7 since they are chinese themselves).
Also my eco tute is fixed now :D

I did the auto-clash-free-timetable but its in a spot id prefer to change...

Same here.. I'm using a Mac as well and I've tried different browsers, micro eco just doesn't work.. :/

I've heard that for Introductory Microeconomics, they've experienced "over-enrolment" where a lot more students enrolled in the subject than anticipated, so they've had to have "emergency meetings" to alleviate the crisis.

surely having a pc or a mac wont effect enrolment, i think you just got lucky :)

Thats a rather strange thing for the universtity to say, because
Introductory Microeconomics
Introductory Macroeconomics
are BOTH compulsory Level 1 subjects for ALL BCom students and the Handbook lists the former as a pre-requisite of the latter.
To me this can only mean that ALL BCom students will enrol for Micro in Semester 1 and Macro in Semester 2.
How can the Uni claim an over-enrolment surprise? All they had to do was count the number of 1st year admissions :)

Oh god...5 hours sounds terrible. But then again, if you are actually doing something good then I guess it could be alright.
And yeah, will probably skip the first month of GHS lectures and take advantage of South Lawn whilst the weather is still good haha.

No, not really. There are people doing it as breadth. And those people are not all first year students. I know a few friends (3rd year students) who have enrolled in the subject and are doing it in semester 1 this year.

Very true, I forgot about that.
For a moment I thought that the (ac)COUNTING at UoM was poor and I was ready to transfer to Monash :)

UM. question? Which subject should i best go to? Chem..maths..bio...or jap?

Lectures you can either lectopia or go to a later stream. Only exception would be Calculus 1 where you will copy down notes during the lecture. Usually the first year maths lecture streams have different lecturers so the speed they are covering the course is not completely in sync (usually). If you have a friend in your usual stream you can copy off them the notes for the Friday lecture. Or you could try going to a later stream and then sort of fill in the gaps you have in your notes (which you will purchase in the first week from the bookstore).
-
Happy with my timetable. I get lunch free all week, afternoon breaks and the earliest I start is 10 AM on Friday for one hour all day. Also, on campus which means I can meander back and forth. Latest is 5:15 on Mondays. Still back to college for dinner though! ;D
-
I still can't register for any of my biol lectures, tutorials and pracs
every time I save I get application error, even when I press cancel I get an application error
I've been told to go to the EPSC and get it done there
does anyone else have this problem?
its the same with microeconomics, wait it out :)
-
I've been looking at the UniMelb map and can find no building numbered "100" on Leicester St :S Is it a new building or something?? :-\

That's what you're looking for. It's a fair walk off campus.
-
it's just that everyone else I've spoken to says it's fine, but I've been trying since 10am yesterday and all I get is an application error
Don't worry; I'm getting the same thing for bio and so are a number of my friends. I'm just waiting for a couple of days, and if it *still* isn't working then I'll contact the uni. From what I've heard, they've just told the people who have rung to wait anyways.
-
Guise! I got a spot in ESD1 workshop Tuesday 9am-12pm :D THANK YOU to whoever left the class!
-
Yea don't panic i can't edit Biology as well
-
For intro microeconomics, it says 'registration closed'. Arghhhh this is crazy!

Class Reg update: BIOL 10004 and ECON 10004
posted by 13 MELB on Thursday, February 02 2012
We are aware that a limited number of students have been unable to register into classes for this subject. This has been reported and technical staff are investigating the cause of this problem and appropriate solutions.
To ensure fairness to all students, until a resolution can be implemented, we have closed class registration for this subject. Advice will be provided to students as to when class registration for this subject will reopen, before it is reopened. Please continue to check your emails for further information.
Please Note, as a standard process, this subject has staggered release settings applied. This means that at 10am on Friday 20 February, extra places in all classes will be made available to students for registration.
We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused you and appreciate your patience while we try to resolve this problem.
-
What exactly is the rush
Exactly.
In fact there are hidden benefits in not registering for classes immediately.
Those who complete their registration within 30 seconds after registration opens, are by definition people you dont want to be grouped with.
Therefore if you wait, THEY group themselves with each other, and WE take whats left, secure in the knowledge that we'll be grouped with the COOL and RELAXED people :)

I like the way you think, but i'll sleep better knowing I got in early and managed to get two days off :)

can we change lecture timetables even after classes start if there is room left?
-
From twitter:
BIOL10004 & ECON10004 class registration issues have now been resolved. They will re-open at 10am Monday 6 February for registration.
-
And from Facebook:
UPDATE for students in BIOL10004 and ECON10004.
The cause of difficulties experienced by some students registering for classes in these subjects has been resolved.
Class Registration for BIOL10004 & ECON10004 will reopen at 10am on Monday 6th February. Please refer to your university email for further information.

can we change lecture timetables even after classes start if there is room left?
Yes you can. And if it's just lectures you need to change, you don't really have to as no one is stopping you from just turning up to a different lecture.

Why do they have lecture streams? Like for eco, if I go to the eco lecture at 10 on tuesday, they make me come on 10 on thursday as well. Can I turn up to the eco lecture at 10 on tuesday but then also to the one at 11 on thursday instead of 10am?
-
Can you? Yes. Are you allowed to? No.
-
Can you? Yes. Are you allowed to? No.
Summarised perfectly. One more though that I think would be relevant:
Are you going to get detention/suspension? No.
-
And to add: does the uni actually care? No unless a specific stream is too full. But in general, no.

Each stream has its own pace of learning, depending on the lecturer. The lecture that you usually go to might not necessarily be the same pace as the replacement lecture.

yaya biology finally works!!!!!
i'm just wondering when we are doing pracs, do we have write our report/findings on loose leaf?? so that we can submit it to the teacher or can we use a notebook

You can't use a notebook. You will need to buy a prac manual from the bookshop for like 25 dollars. You only need to hand in one prac, the rest are usually assessed in class but there is working space within the prac manual that you will need to use to take notes.
^ That's for biol, in chem you will need one of those books that copies down what you write on a page you save, also found at the bookshop! I CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT THEY ARE CALLED. And for physics you use a physics manual thing that stays in the lab for the entirety of the semester. And for psychology, your labs aren't real labs so you don't do reports.

wow thanks for that! :) saved me from going out and getting a notebook for prac :) and that chemistry book thingo sounds expensive!
btw do you use binders/folders to organise all the printouts the lecturer gives you? oh and should i keep separate notebooks for lectures and tutorials??
Thanks

Is it just me or is the uni email not working either?

works for me, i've just logged in

Still can't log in unfortunately - so I tried logging in through the LMS link and it says 'no subjects enrolled'. Should I start panicking? I've registered into all my classes already, why isn't it listed on LMS?

Nah it's like five dollars, it should be on the booklist for the subject (maybe) BUT THE NAME EVADES ME...
Well it depends on whether you'll be printing the notes, I only printed them for Physics and Chemistry and used my laptop to take notes for everything else.
I had one five subject notebook and that seemed to be enough, but probably because I was using a computer for some of my work. It's up to you - I think it would be annoying to carry around big binders all the time, but if you're not using a computer you might opt for a notebook per subject so you won't run out of pages :)

speaking of pracs/ LABS/ reports in biology/chem/physics....
do we SERIOUSLY do these for science...almost like we did in VCE? i get that it will be more in depth, but if our main coursework for the science subjects predominately going to be centred around prac reports...writing about your findings...and drawing up conclusions? :O :O :O
-
Sometimes but I never did that in VCE so I can't comment to a great extent.

Chem pracs are pretty much like VCE, you mix chemicals, filter stuff...and write lab reports. Physics pracs you sit at a desk and play with toys. Biology pracs are very organised and you do a range of things from drawing stuff to dissecting animals...I think. Pracs are examinable mostly, but are usually not examined very much from experience. The coursework thus 'revolves' around the lectures if you ask me.

NOOO!!! i suck at/ hate lab reports :( it will get me nowhere in life. are these reports kind of like what we do in vce? observe your experiments....get your results...explain/evaluate them? :(

Pretty much!

First year physics labs are absurdly simple to get 10/10 in. Although some nit-picky bitch demonstrator gave me a 9.5 once >:(
