Title: [UoM] 2012 Semester 1 Results Thread
Post by: VivaTequila on June 22, 2012, 04:30:29 pm
Edited In accordance with mavisgibbons' rec I changed the title of this thread to prevent opening a new one.
Dude you should take your student number off the internet...and potentially your full name...
Well done on the H1 though.

You get your study plan result first, the results page result comes out a little bit later. It will be like this for every result to come, so always check the study plan. Conventionally, as you are the first person to receive a result you are entitled to/should make a proper results thread! Go go go. OR JUST CHANGE THE TITLE OF THIS ONE to this semesters results thread.

Thirdly, how annoying that Micro is this lazy. Our last assessment was legit almost five weeks ago. Hope you're enjoying your holiday in Texas Cheryl.

How did we all go?

Thus far I've scraped a H1 in Chemistry 1 :D

I assume you checked your study plan rather than the formal results checking page.

It's probably a system error somewhere, you're not *meant* to be able to get them early like that ahah

On the main page of the portal under the link to gmail and the notices, there is a list of all your subjects and a link that says "view entire study plan".

Hey, mine says MIS, what does that mean? I looked it up and it said:

This indicator indicates that no result has yet been entered for a student in the relevant subject (results are entered for other students)

Does that mean I need to wait a bit longer for my result to appear? I'm in Chem FUndamentals.

Fundamentals might not be released yet. I did chemistry 1 so it says it just underneath the (grayed out/completed) subject title Chemistry 1. Should I post a pic so people know what to look for?

I'll up a pic. Just a moment.

It should look something like this. Chemistry 1 is the only one released for me as of now. You can try to get your results by going to this link (it's just your student portal results link)

full link:
https://app.portal.unimelb.edu.au/portal/page/portal/StudentPortal/SIS/Results

img capped from there and posted below.

edit: deleted... didn't realise how dumb that was.

Another results period!  Looking forward to seeing you absolutely destroy it.  :)

As for student numbers and privacy...you have none of it when the douchebag coordinator emails us all a document with every single persons name and student number haha.

Lmfao, gj Melbourne Uni.

Haha, I don't know about the destroying capabilities this semester. Doing four full on Science subjects wasn't much fun...majorly screwed up at least one exam! We will have to wait and see. I expect another 90+ average from you though, definitely.

So we start timetabling before we even get our results for first semester? What if we timetable for semester 2 only to find out we failed a subject?

Also, my results are only showing up as stars.

I think when you enroll into a subject with an incomplete prerequisite, it's a conditional enrollment. So if you fail I'm assuming it'll withdraw you from it, and that subject disappears from your timetable. Before you get your results you can still enroll into those classes though.

Results showing up as *** means there hasn't been a result released for it.

With this emergency portal thing, you can access your study plan through 'add or swap subjects'. Anyway, still no results for me. All that I know is that I can't get < 60.27% for Numerical and Symbolic Maths since for the first assignment (worth 20%) I got 40/50, the first exam (mid-year worth 30%) I got 34/40 and for the second assignment (worth 20%) I got 61/65, all that I'm waiting on for that subject is my result to the second exam.

If you're at your study plan, underneath the subject it either says 'enrolled' or 'passed/failed?'. If it says passed/failed then you can view your score underneath.

It's in grey if that helps

Nice!  Well done. :)

But seriously....RAGE RAGE RAGE!  The Chem for Biomed exam was on the 18th, marks out on the 27th.  That is insanely efficient.

Now, lets take a look at the shit heap Genetics Department.  The ENTIRE second year subject is multiple choice.  They don't have to mark a single thing.  Everything is marked electronically.   Exam was on the 13th...still nothing.  It is not that bloody hard!!!

It's run both semesters and I'm pretty sure the Sem2 class is full now. It's only necessary for people considering the major so it's not entirely popular, it's a practical subject and a lot of people hate prac. About 300 were enrolled in the theory subject.

True, MD is so trendy these days ^_^

80 for Fundamentals of Chemistry!!!! I THOUGHT I FAILED!!

Does this mean you can go directly into Chemistry 2?

I would not recommend if you just scraped an 80. Just as advice!

I asked the lecturer at the beginning of the semester and I think she said >87 usually, so I'll see if I even get the opportunity first.

Yeah I think Chem 1 is much harder than Chem 2! So that cut off makes sense. I don't think Chem 2 would be hard to tackle in the summer but I struggled with the physical chemistry in Chem 1 and that meant my score was much lower than what I got in Chem 2 (even with da Quantum stuffz).

Only 50? Why so little interest? Or did most people do it in semester 1?

Also, any predictions on when calc 1 results will come out? The exam was the 4th of June.

It's run both semesters and I'm pretty sure the Sem2 class is full now. It's only necessary for people considering the major so it's not entirely popular, it's a practical subject and a lot of people hate prac. About 300 were enrolled in the theory subject.

Right sorry I meant sem 2 haha. If anyone who has done this subject/any other micro subjects could find the time to do a review that would be really helpful :) I'm still tossing up between path and micro for a major but planning to do subjects from both to see which one I enjoy the most.

Sure :) I will write a review in the thread once my results come out and let you know when I have so you can read it! They were both pretty good subjects! Recommend taking them together in Sem 1 as there is a lot of overlap and it's not hard to take them concurrently - think it helps a bit, feels like you're only doing three subjects (one with a bit more work). I kind of wish I had the opportunity to take Path in Semester 2 so I could see what it's like, but I'm leaning more towards being a stereotypical Physiology student after this semester anyway, so we will see!

Maybe it's because I tried desperately hard not to fail at Physics in first semester and therefore didn't have as much time for Chem 1! Our exam was really hard that year though, too, I didn't finish it in time >:
Idk, I got an 86 in Chem 1 and a 96 in Chem 2 so take from that what you will. Perhaps it depends on the person - I felt there was more mathematical stuff in Chem 1 and more theoretical stuff (even the Quantum shit was theoretical) in Chem 2 so maybe that's why I did better in the latter. I do suck at maths.

Sometimes but not usually, pre-reading doesn't really work for me because I don't understand what I need to know until it's outlined in a lecture. I'm a terrible uni learner! So I read the readings after the lecture, and use those and my notes to create a preliminary summary. That summary then gets used to make final summaries at the end of the semester! But by summaries they are not really because it's usually about...six? seven? 96 page handwritten books per subject. They're more books that contain EVERYTHING IN THE COURSE. It's the only way I learn. For Chem though, practice exams all the way!

would anyone know when mbb1 results can be expected by? It was all multiple choice so i don't understand why we don't have the results already!

Definitely by Friday 6 July.

Cos releasing results isn't as easy as 1,2...  what comes next?

People have to mark them (or in your case, enter it into a machine), then the subject coordinator has to verify the people who failed and cross examine them to see if they really failed.  Then the results get entered into the system.  Then the faculty checks them.  Then they get released.  Now imagine that process being repeated many, many times.

I must admit I did stalk you twitter once and saw a massive pile of books :P Might try that, I just like stationery and having everything written out neatly and organised. Would you also suggest perhaps condensing the notes into a summary/crucial points later on in the semester or do you find that the many books are enough?

Lesson learned, seriously, I didn't have nearly enough time for study.

Lies! I don't even understand how I got that to be honest, in parts of that exam I just wrote things down that made absolutely no sense. Like I just mentioned random words in the midst of gibberish so they thought I understood what I was talking about. Like gubernaculum.

no difference you still get a H2A, which is 6.5

if anything you would be much more upset with a 79 then a 75 ;)

How do GPA calculations follow the 1st 2nd and 3rd year weightings then? The first semester of third year is actually worth half our GPA? :S

I'm not sure.
Basically it depends whether they work out a "year" score or recognize that because you've only done half a year, your first semester would be overweighted and thus compensate for that (by averaging just the units).

Either way sem2 of 3rd year isn't counted if you apply for the following year.

Sorry to be the combo breaker here, but what happens if we fail a subject yet we've already enrolled for the timetable of its subsequent subject?

E.g. Calc 1 to Calc 2 (yet failing Calc 1)

Then unfortunately, you won't be able to complete Calculus 2.

I too am a mere mortal.

My marks so far for this semester:

MAST90067 - Advanced Methods: Transforms Passed 2012, Semester 1, Parkville, On Campus, Semester 1
Mark: 74 Grade: Second Class Hons (H2B)

MAST30011 - Graph Theory Passed 2012, Semester 1, Parkville, On Campus, Semester 1
Mark: 65 Grade: Third Class Honours (H3)

MAST90045 - Systems Modelling and Simulation Passed 2012, Semester 1, Parkville, On Campus, Semester 1
Mark: 71 Grade: Second Class Hons (H2B)

Btw: Great mark for graph theory!

Man, you're postgrad and you're killing it.  Pretty much anything higher than a P in postgrad maths is extremely stellar.  You're definitely going to get into Masters.

Pretty stoked, just waiting on Physics 1 now.

MAST10006 - Calculus 2
Passed
2012, Semester 1, Parkville, On Campus, Semester 1
Mark: 97 Grade: First Class Honours (H1)

ENGR10004 - Engineering Systems Design 1
Passed
2012, Semester 1, Parkville, On Campus, Semester 1
Mark: 91 Grade: First Class Honours (H1)

ECON10004 - Introductory Microeconomics
Passed
2012, Semester 1, Parkville, On Campus, Semester 1
Mark: 95 Grade: First Class Honours (H1)

AMAZING!!! :)

LING10001 - The Secret Life of Language
Passed
2012, Semester 1, Parkville, On Campus, Semester 1
Mark: 70 Grade: Second Class Hons B (H2B)

Damn you breadth, how dare you ruin my H1 streak!

Dw, you've still done really well this semester! :)

The problem with SLL is that firstly, I found the exam to just be stupid and rather unfair at times.  Secondly, the exam or maybe even the entire subject is marked on a bell curve, which sucks.

Thanks! Just crossing my fingers that I get >75 for NSM.

The work ethic from people on this site is AMAZING! I recall someone earlier asking if Melbourne University just hands out H1's, the answer is DEFINITELY no! The people who get H1's have to work their butt off to get a grade like that.

Just to think about what people on this forum will be doing in 10 years time.

don't worry, lucky it's just first sem first year it doesn;t affect gpa that much, you can still score a really good gpa! :)

Don't be disheartened by first year results. I had less than impressive first year marks (they were pretty bad!! I hardly studied at all) but have ended up pulling an OK gpa. First year only counts 1/6th, so at the end of the degree it's not much at all!

I'd probably agree, calc 2 uses a lot of knowledge from specialist and from what i've seen calc 1 is a lot like specialist minus some topics. So it would be harder jumping straight into calc 1 than extending your knowledge for calc 2.

Yeah, MCB definitely lived up to its horror stories, but luckily I still managed a H1 in the end after a torturous amount of work. Thanks again for the notes! :D Looking forward to next semester too cos you did pretty much twice the amount for HSF, which is wicked cos I'll be needing all the help I can get for that one haha.

I have my marks for commerce but they are incredibly low. Like there is no way I could have got those marks based on my mid-sems. I would have had to majorly fuck up the exams. Maybe the mark I have is just my mark for the actual exam so that I can make a decision about whether to sit the supp exams. I was awarded special exams due to major traffic incident and subsequent health problems.... Maybe I'm just shitter than I thought ?

An H1 and H2A is nothing to be disappointed about. Those are great marks.

Calculate all the marks you have lost on the assignments etc. If you have an option to inspect your exam like some subjects offer then you can see!

Calculate the exact mark you have been given for the examinations, and then email the subject co-ordinator(s) requesting to view your exam. I've never heard of the request being denied. Definitely view your exam if you think something's up; last year, for my second semester UniPhil mark at UoM, a similar thing happened, and I requested to look at the exam paper. An error was found and my marked jumped by about 20. No joke.

Extremely surprised about my marks - was thinking there was a possibility I might get 3 H1's. Ended up with zero  >:( What's more, the subject I thought I'd get the highest mark for (Vector Calculus) I went the worst in, and my predicted worst subject (Thermal+Classical Physics) ended up being the best  ::)

Bottom line: Uni is stupid.

I always assume the worst prior to the release of results. That way, I'm always going to avoid disappointment and at least feel content or pleasantly surprised whenever my results are released. I'd imagine most people who assume the worst and think they failed do so for these reasons too.

Anyway, I got my final mark of 81, which means four H1s and one H2A in total!

81  Accounting Reports and Analysis
82  Introductory Microeconomics
92  Quantitative Methods 1
72  Medieval Plague, War & Heresy

Was really suprised about my marks, didn't expect QM to be that high and accounting to be low. Overall really happy :)
