It's sad to see that so many are disappointed with how they performed but just be aware that it's not all over. I've experienced first hand that perseverance is really the key to getting into Medicine. I only got my place after bugging the Monash admin for days for an irregular offer. Same for my friend. Another friend did the same who even had a ~70 percentile UMAT and ended up getting in (she's admittedly from a rural background though so consideration is given there). My feeling is that Monash just wants to quickly fill the places remaining during the 2nd round of offers to avoid having to go down to 5th round offers or whatever as many universities end up having to do. Use this to your advantage and show them how much you want to get in after the 1st round offers get given out. The same goes for other universities. I had heard of the incredible power of nagging to get into Med, hence why I tried my luck and to my surprise, succeeded.

And what you guys have been saying is right; the selection process is ridiculous. The UMAT in particular is close to useless in judging ability. ENTER correlates well with written exam performance, and interview with clinical exam performance from my experience, but it doesn't mean you need to absolutely gun either to be able to pass the exams or ultimately be a good doctor. Just bear with the bureaucracy of this selection process, persevere through VCE and hopefully gun your ATAR and let's see if VN can get any more miracles this year.

may i ask.
what exactly do you mean .. " nag them"
i mean ...... they give you the offers ... so .. wht  . did you keep emailing them asking for offers or something? lol

Well to apply for an irregular offer to VTAC, you have to first get accepted by the university through an informal process i.e. phone/email nagging. Once they agree to let you in, you get them to sign a piece of paper and you're in. So during this process, yeh, email and call them up to ask for a irregular place. I could feel that the admissions lady was pretty irritated with me by the end of it as she regrettably signed the paper, but hey, it worked. Getting a mainstream place 2nd round might be difficult, so try applying for the ERC and bonded places as well. I'd try my luck at ERC and then bonded. ERC is fairly good; only difference between that and mainstream as far as I'm aware is that you have to go to Bendigo or Mildura during years 3, 4 and 5 instead of staying in Melbourne. Going to those places is better for learning anyway - city hospitals aren't good teaching environments. It sounds daunting but if you're really wanting to get into Med, it's really a small sacrifice to make IMO.

I assume even without the whole irregular offer thing, you can still do the same thing at any other uni. Just let them know you're extremely keen and I'm sure they'll know that means more than any of their other selection criteria.

sigh, with situations like this, its either destory you or build you...hopefully you people wouldnt get destroyed by the bombardment of crappy umat scores. should be thankful that this isnt the enterscore you would get in the end..

wif a VERY VERY boardline umat score of gettin in pharmacy myself, even if dere is just a slight hope i will still go for it, atleast in the end i wouldnt regret it for not trying. l'm sure if you put in the time and effort, it will eventually pay off!!

Yes, we might have to add a year or two or three to our studies, but think of the end result.

It's not all bad, in the end you'll end up more educated and also have two degrees. You'll be more mentally developed at that point too and be better equipped to handle the challenges medicine presents you. (wow i think they really sold me on that melbourne model stuff)

Hey just out of interest is there a such thing as graduate pharmacy?

even if dere is just a slight hope i will still go for it

Don't have much to lose by putting pharmacy as #1 on your preferences but you got a hell of a lot to gain

Of course, your umat/enter will still have some kind of baring on if you get an irregular place or not, i dont know if theyd admit people who got like 10th percentile on the umat for instance (or maybe they will i dont know..)

@Stonecold
Nope.
53 raw overall.
Somehow I managed to get a 37 for section 2.

Oh well. C'est la vie.

I'm actually happy. I just realised how difficult it was going to be to study at monash, or interstate. I was so caught up in the dream of studying medicine that I did not consider the practicality of doing so. I don't think I would have been able to live by myself, and support myself financially.

Now all I need is a 99.9 ATAR for a guaranteed place in grad med at melbourne. LOL. :P

man, umat is such a misrepresentation.  i thought you would do really well... but ah well, like you said, there is always some form of silver lining.

I am hoping to get something similar to what you did in bio...awesome score!

There are three, but honestly I wouldn't want to study in Geelong or Gippsland.
Three?

If it comes down to that though, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Monash (Gippsland), Melbourne and Deakin (Geelong).

But that's true. I can sacrifice a few years living away from family/friends to pursue my dream. Hopefully I'll be more ready to do that in 3 years time.

i got the same overall score as stonecold and am shattered !
I agree with kingpomba, I don't think the UMAT is a good enough way to decide who would be a good doctor. I actually think going for an interview first would be a better option as in my eyes it would make the process slightly more fair. Although it is highly unlikely... someone can walk in, circle any random answers and find they get 95+ percentile. With having the interview first they can find out more about you from the beginning before they get more involved with you. Yes this would be very inconvenient for universities because of the large amounts of people that apply but we do put in a lot of effort ourselves to get the vce results required for med, so I dont think that effort should be a problem for them. I just don't think a multiple choice test taken in 3 hours is good enough to decide if you are worthy of your dreams.

Medicine's never really been a mainstream course; they do what they want really. We operate separately to the rest of the uni pretty much. One thing that I forgot to acknowledge is that I haven't actually heard of anyone doing this without having already done an interview, and I guess that's the major factor blocking people's chances right now. But still, it might be possible. Surprise me. I've heard plenty of miracles where people have received offers into Med 3 weeks into starting their first year of Biomed.

It's not that far away, its just geelong anyway. Not like you're in perth or something.

One of my mates wants to go to a uni in geelong or ballarat and he is willing to drive up and back each day to here (west side of melbourne) which is like a 2 hour trip..

In 3 years time youll be more mature and many things anyway. After you leave your Bsc you'll largely have to make new friends anyway so it wont be that big of an impact, the family thing might be though. Could always return on weekends or hope you get a really sweet time table and you dont have to be there every day.

I think this is a very good idea but i agree it does present time issues for the university with the large amount of candidates.

People might also have interview jitters or something which might also impact on that (if they use the MMI method, which they do, jitters will affect this more so)

So, i still think some kind of test is still advisable.

Well melbourne uni is more prestigious and ranked higher but if that means shit all to you, if you live in geelong, go to a uni in geelong and save yourself the hell of a 2 hour up and 2 hour back travel time.

(you live in geelong right or did i read that wrong)
